    1. RE: 2 questions
    2. David Conroyd
    3. It can easily get confusing, but here's my try: One way of describing "cousins-removed" is that it is the difference in the number of generational links you and a cousin have back to your common ancestor. (There can also be a further distinction, that being who has the longer or shorter "chain.") 14th Cousin, 9 times removed means: The cousin with the shortest line back to a common ancestor has 15 generations, the other person has 24 [15+9] generations back. (And it is 15 generations, not 14. Remember that ONE generation back are your parents and their other children are your brothers and sisters. TWO generations back are your grandparents and anyone else who shares them with you as your nearest ancestors-in-common are your FIRST cousins. A simple example: The children of your third cousins would be your third cousins, once removed. It may help to understand a specific example by drawing out on paper all of the links involved between two cousins back to their common ancestor. I hope that helps, and doesn't hinder, your understanding. > -----Original Message----- > From: Patti Gigandet [mailto:gidget@osrc.org] > Sent: Saturday, August 14, 1999 3:00 PM > To: VACAROLI-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: 2 questions > > > Hi, got 2 questions here: > Can anyone explain to me what "times removed" means exactly? > Like if I have > a 14th cousin 9 times removed, what does that mean exactly? > Also, looking for the guy who has put posts several times on a Rev > Wiatt/Wyatt, I have a file he might be interested in, if he > doesn't already > have it. 2. Becky Redd Casagrande
    3. Hi Caroline folks: I'll apologize in advance for being OFF SUBJECT! I would like to see the answer to Patti Gigandet's question regarding TIMES REMOVED. I have found a chart that helps you figure out your exact relationship someone, but it does not explain the "removed" part. I will gladly give any interested folks the website for this chart if you email me directly. Also -- another off subject question -- what exactly does "no issue" mean? I've thought that perhaps there was no issue of a marriage bond, etc. If someone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance! === Becky Redd Casagrande (genequene@yahoo.com) Researching: REDD (VA/MI); PITTMAN (VA); DEAN (KY); MITCHELL (Northumberland & Lancaster Counties, VA); EDMONDS (VA); SHIRLEY (VA); BRACKETT (KY); BAIN (WV/KY); JETER, SHUCK & HALL (Northumberland/Lancaster Counties, VA); CASAGRANDE (PA/MD/ITALY); PADALETI (PA/MD/ITALY); RANKIN (PA); MUGRAGE (PA) _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 2. Patti Gigandet
    3. Hi, got 2 questions here: Can anyone explain to me what "times removed" means exactly? Like if I have a 14th cousin 9 times removed, what does that mean exactly? Also, looking for the guy who has put posts several times on a Rev Wiatt/Wyatt, I have a file he might be interested in, if he doesn't already have it. Just email me privately, it goes back to Renaissance England, some of it's medieval Patti SURNAMES: Chicago&NJ-Coyne, Niehaus Mass- Baker, Bourne, Curtis, Chilton, Miller, Newton, Pope, Shaw, Snow, Standish, Warren, Winslow Virginia- Leitch, Purcell, Rowe Japan-Fujii England- Ollyver, Spinney, Tansley, Throckmorton, Warren, Waterman

    1. Spotsylvania Co. Database Online
    2. Here's a good source for early records of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., and Caroline Co.: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaspotsy/spotsydb.htm There have been requests for places to find old maps of Caroline Co. There's a site at www.goldbug.com that has old maps but they have really gone commercial since the last time I looked. Does anyone know of any source for finding old maps of Caroline and surrounding counties that you can recommend? Thanks, peg

    1. Property ? 1795 Brame, Taylor, Barlow
    2. Phyllis Solter
    3. I found a note of interest to me. I'm working on the Barlow family in Caroline County. Here's the quote: Benjamin Toler is given permission to open a road from Goose Pond through the lands of Richard Squire Taylor to the Mankeleek Road. The old (my underlining)road runs between the plantations of Walter Brame & Mary Barlow. 22 June 1795. I've found Goose Pond on the map. Is anyone on this list able to locate either Richard Squire Taylor or Walter Brame in this area? They should both be in the general vicinity of Mary Barlow's (widow of William Barlow, daughter of John Mason) land. I'm also interested in family information for Richard Taylor as one of the few notes I have about my Barlow family says "there's a Miss Taylor somewhere in this line." Thanks for any information Phyllis Solter Mary Barlow's gX4grandaughter

    1. Re: First Caroline County Baptist
    2. Bob, I think there is information on early Baptist churches in Caroline in Marshall Wingfield's History of Caroline Co., VA. I took it back to the public library last week so I can't check for you. There might also be general info on early Baptist churches in a book on Baptist history. Caroline Co. was where several Baptist dissenters went to jail for their belief in religious freedom. I have a couple of Baptist history books in my church library that I keep forgetting to bring home. As Peg said, the VA Baptist Historical Society is an excellent source. Edith >I am seeking information on the first or earliest Baptist Churches in Saint >Margarets Parish, King William Co., now Caroline Co., VA. > >Would you have an address of an historian or society or school who would >know the very early history of the Baptist in that area?

    1. Baptist churches in A.P. Hill area
    2. Seven Baptist churches in Caroline Co. went out of existence in 1941 when the Federal Government purchased several thousand acres of improved land for Fort A.P. Hill. "Three white Baptist churches - Bethesda founded in 1848, Liberty in 1811, and Zion in 1774 - and four Negro Baptist churches. . . The 3 white churches had a total membership between 700 and 800 and the 4 Negro churches about 400." These churches were a part of Hermon Association. This is from A History of Baptists in Virginia by Reuben E. Alley, c1973. Edith

    3. Thank you for the address for Herbert Collins. The cemetery in question is technically in Spotsylvania County, but it made the Caroline book. He listed five burials, but I know of sixteen others, all unmarked. Hopefully they will make some future revision of the book. Larry Dickerson

    3. At a library yesterday I came across a book entitled "People, Postoffices and Communities in Caroline County, Virginia, 1727-1969" by Rev. Ralph Emmet Fall. In the book he describes a house in the Reedy Church District called 'Frog Pond' as "a frame house, originally 1-1/2 stories, raised to two stories in about 1900, with seven rooms, was built c. 1790. Owners: James Dyson, one of the first owners; Dr. L.C. Pollard, who lived here a few years prior to 1860; William Freeman, c. 1861, in whose family the house remained afterward. South of the house is the Dyson family graveyard without markers." I am descended from James Dyson. The book seems to tally with my grandmother's description of a house pointed out to her many years ago as belonging to her great-grandparents. Dr. Pollard moving in prior to 1860 coincides with the fact that James Dyson and his wife both died c. 1856. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about this house or the cemetery. Is this the 'Dyson-Barnett-Dimue-Thomas' graveyard listed in Volume 2 of Caroline County Cemeteries, or is this a different one that isn't in the book? Larry Dickerson
