    1. Re: Confederate grave markers
    2. Linda Butt
    3. Hi all! The info that Peg posted is the same that I have and is exactly what I did to get a marker on my great grandfather's grave in Greenlawn. The only exception is that in Caroline there is a UDC member who has been responsible for actually finding the graves and for helping to file the papers for the markers. She and her husband order the stones through David Storke Funeral home and place the stones themselves. They just put my stone on for me this past weekend......Lots of work and effort and no compensation other than the satisfaction of knowing that these men are finally getting a decent marker. by the way.... If there is a stone already on the grave, then the veteran would not be entitled to a free one from the Federal Gov't. Linda

    1. Confederate grave markers
    2. Hello all, Linda B. can tell us more about this but on an Alabama 42nd Infantry site I also maintain, one of the men wrote me one day to say that if I knew of anyone who had an ancestor who fought in the Civil War and whose grave needed a marker, the Federal Government is still paying to have one created for the veteran. Jason Lewis just wrote the email I include below and though he lives in Alabama, he has offered to answer questions or help anyone who needs more guidance on ordering a marker. I personally was unaware of such a government program til Jason wrote and asked me to post it on the Alabama site. :) Linda, maybe you could add more to this in regards to Caroline veterans? peg So here it is: "....Go to the county courthouse and then go to the Veteran Affairs Dept. Tell them that you want to order a Confederate marker. You need to have proof that these people served in the Confederate army, such as an official muster roll pension application or some kind of other proof. You need to have date of birth and death and place of burial. You would have go and get the marker from the place that it is send to and place it down yourself.I have mine sent to a funeral home ad they call me when it comes in.If I can help out anybody, please give them my e-mail address or telephone# 205-921-5180." 1. Kelly / Mason
    2. Laurence E. Dickerson
    3. I am looking for information on Sally Kelly and Jenny Kelly, almost certainly sisters, who married two Mason brothers. Sally Kelly wed William Mason on 2 February 1797. Jenny Kelly married Joel Mason on 14 December 1798. Both weddings were conducted in Caroline County by John Self. Who were the parents of Sally and Jenny? Were there other siblings? When and where were Sally and Jenny born? Does anyone know how long they lived? Sally Mason appears as the head of household on the Caroline County census as late as 1830. Jenny probably died between 1830 and 1840. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have information on this family. Larry Dickerson

    3. Hi Peg, I used to take the Caroline Progress but after Donald and I started to travel I let it lapse. After he died in December I meant to have it resumed but unfortunately with everything that has to be taken care of I just keep forgetting I would like to have a copy of the picture of the class of Edmund Pendleton. I wasn't able to "chat" on either occasion and I would like to have the August 11th one if it's convenient for you to send it. I am going to send you some information that I gathered from an old cemetery that a cousin of mine is clearing out within the next day or so. It's in Hanover but a lot of the names will be familiar to Caroline County researchers and who knows maybe somebody will recognize one. Thanks for being out there for all of us. 1. World War I draft registration
    2. Charles L. Dibble
    3. Forwarded From Another List: M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some information to everyone. Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and I'll try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few years. But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for me to take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research <g>. And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on.

    3. Patti - The xxst, xxnd terminology works for people who are the same number of generations from a common ancestor: siblings share parents 1st cousins share grandparents 2nd cousins share great-grandparents 3rd cousins share great-great-grandparents etc. The "removed" terminology is used when the relationship being described is between two people of different generations (i.e., you are a different number of generations from the common ancestor): You and your second cousin share great-grandparents. You are both three generations "down". You and your second cousin's child are one generation apart. You are second cousins once removed. You are one generation apart ("removed") from being second cousins. Your second cousin's child and your child are third cousins. They are both four generations "down": they share great-great-grandparents. cld -----Original Message----- From: Patti Gigandet <gidget@osrc.org> To: VACAROLI-L@rootsweb.com <VACAROLI-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, August 15, 1999 5:22 AM Subject: Re: Off subject-times removed & no issue >I do know that issue means children, I am currently reading a book that a >gentleman wrote in the 1700s in Scotland, The History of Myddle (an >excellent genealogical find for someone-not for me though-just reading it to >learn how they talked back then), and he talks about all the people he's >known in that town, and he always mentions the men first....and William >Rideley married Isabel Muckleston and they had issue....and then it lists >children's names >But the 2nd thing. 3. Thank you everyone for answering my question, I understand alot better now. Never knew what it meant exactly and knew someday I would post the question when I got caught up in my genealogy. Does one ever get caught up? But I suppose my Winslow line, 2nd wife to Edgar Healey Rowe, the Caroline native has gone back as far as earthly possible, and I'm quite satisfied and will go no further on her, because I think anything earlier would be hard to prove. So that leaves all the other lines, hehe, including dear g-grandfather Edgar Rowe & his father John Gallatin Rowe. I was just curious about the question, because according to Family Tree Maker, another person on the CAROLINE list is my 4th cousin. And when I looked it up, I was surprised, I figured we were at least a little removed, his g-grandmother & my g-grandfather were siblings, but now that I put it on paper, 4th cousins looks about right, and I'm glad we're not removed :) Patti SURNAMES: Chicago&NJ-Coyne, Niehaus Mass- Baker, Bourne, Curtis, Chilton, Miller, Newton, Pope, Shaw, Snow, Standish, Warren, Winslow Virginia- Leitch, Purcell, Rowe Japan-Fujii England- Ollyver, Spinney, Tansley, Throckmorton, Warren, Waterman

    1. Re: cousins
    2. Peg, I get ?'s all the time when I say that I am going to visit a 2nd cousin, twice removed..."how did they become that?" they say....now I just say that they are a cousin....saves time!!! Of course, my favorite is my half 7th cousin 3 times removed (who I found through Rootsweb lists) All I have to say is thank god that my Family Tree Maker tells me these things, otherwise, I would NEVER be able to figure it out!!! 1. No issue and "removed" definitions
    2. "No issue" means no children. On the "removed" definition, this is from Reunion's book: "A first coursin once removed is a term we could describe either the child of your first cousin or the child of your great-aunt. They distinguish between the two when noting people in the program. For example, the child of your first cousin is called a cousin in the descendancy.....your 1C1R*. To understand the difference, it may help to think of this person as a descendant of a full cousin. The child of your great-aunt is a cousin in the ascendancy...your 1C1R. In this case, the person is actually an ancestor of one of your full cousins...your second cousin." Hopes this helps, peg

    3. I do know that issue means children, I am currently reading a book that a gentleman wrote in the 1700s in Scotland, The History of Myddle (an excellent genealogical find for someone-not for me though-just reading it to learn how they talked back then), and he talks about all the people he's known in that town, and he always mentions the men first....and William Rideley married Isabel Muckleston and they had issue....and then it lists children's names But the 2nd thing. I thought that my cousin's child is my 2nd cousin, and their child is my 3rd, so on....but then again I also thought that my parent's cousin would be my 2nd cousin Patti SURNAMES: Chicago&NJ-Coyne, Niehaus Mass- Baker, Bourne, Curtis, Chilton, Miller, Newton, Pope, Shaw, Snow, Standish, Warren, Winslow Virginia- Leitch, Purcell, Rowe Japan-Fujii England- Ollyver, Spinney, Tansley, Throckmorton, Warren, Waterman

    1. CARNEAL/CARNAL
    2. Ardyth Long
    3. I am researching the CARNEAL/CARNAL and other variations. The information I have so far says that Patrick CARNEAL/CARNAL (?) was born in Ireland in 1756, was married in VA in 1777 and died in VA in 1835. I have found a townland in Antrim Co. called Carneal but have been unable to find any other information about it. My direct ancestor is my great-grandfather Benjamin Walker CARNAL born May 3, 1882 in Tama, IA. He was the son of Archibald T. CARNAL, born August 23, 1836 in Caroline Co., VA, died December 27, 1889 in Tama, IA. He married Catherine A. HALL. One of Benjamin's brothers (Benjamin was the ninth child) was Nate CARNAL. Nate was Tama County supervisor. His son Edwin was Mayor of Tama. I have no idea where the family was between Virginia and Iowa. The story is that they were plantation owner in Virginia and fled during the Civil War. I would love to share information. Ardyth Long
