Hi William, I found Joseph Meacham served as a juror once in the period 1732-43. There's also a Joseph Meacham listed as a constable appointed in 1747. In 1765 he is listed as deceased and the executors of his estate are listed as Joseph and Elizabeth Meacham. (This is all from T.E. Campbell's book on Caroline Co.) In Dorothy Wulfeck's VA Marriages book I found Joseph, m. 9 Jan 1728 Elizabeth Crutchfield. Christ Church, p. 166 Joseph, b. 1761, Caroline Co.; d. 1833, Hopkinsville, KY; m. Molly West. DAR No. 79 015 William m. 25 Jan. 1748, Jane (____) Aldin. Sur. Edw. Dillard. Middlesex Co. Mar. Bond. Checked in Therese Fisher's Caroline Marriage book and didn't find them. Have you checked for them at the Lib. of VA? Maybe ordering the DAR record will shed some light, too. I couldn't find any ref. to a Meacham River but you might want to try the link on the Caroline page that uses a map search for place names. It's towards the bottom of the page. Good luck, peg price
Dear Fellow Researchers, I would be grateful if anyone can shed light on the following: 1. Is there a "Meachon River" in Caroline County? This has become embedded in Meacham genealogy, but I believe it results from confusion of the Mechum River in Albemarle County. 2. Joseph Meacham (also Mitcham) -- witnessed some deeds for the Crutchfields in the 1740s. What I am seeking specifically is Joseph's wife's name (I believe she was Elizabeth Crutchfield) and any other references to him in Caroline Co. 3. William Meacham -- his date and place of birth and marriage is unknown at present. He appears in Caroline Co. in the 1750s, and moved to N. Carolina in the 1760s or 70s. Another entrenched tradition in Meacham genealogy is that his wife was Elizabeth Crutchfield, but I believe that this was his mother, and Joseph his father. 3. Are there surviving parish records from the 1720s to 1750s for Caroline County that would have birth and marriage records? Are marriage banns available from that period? Thanks very much for any assistance. William Meacham, Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong. Another email address for me is: wmeacham@hkucc.hku.hk

Well, gang, I'm back in America until Dec 17th, (it's great to be among my own kind, again!) so I'm free for chat! Hope you get one going by then. Peg, did you look into Delphi? I am pasting something that was sent to me on another list, not sure if it applies to our Carolinians: >From the Oct. 1995 edition of Reader's Digest Brazil Under fluttering Confederate flags, women in hoop skirts dance the Virginia reel with men wearing rebel gray. It could have been a gathering of Civil War buffs in Georgia or Alabama, but this picnic took place more than 4000 miles below the Mason-Dixon line. Brazilian descendants of Confederate veterans who sought refuge in this tropical nation 130 years ago gather four times a year to celebrate their American roots. They are members of the Fraternidade Descendencia Amercana, founded in 1954 to preserve ties to U.S. culture among an estimated 100,000 heirs of the original emigrants. The Confederate emigres were some 20,000 Southerners who preferred the Brazilian wilderness to life under Yankee rule after the Civil War. The expatriates were called Confederados and their community was Vila Americana, or "American Town." Today Vila Americana (pop. 200,000) is the only city in Brazil with a coat of arms that has a Confederate flag as its centerpiece. -Jack Epstein in _The Christian Science Monitor_ = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = I used several search engines and found the following sites with information about the Confederados. http://www.scv.org/Camp1653/index.htm http://www.uapress.ua.edu/authors/dawsey.htm http://www.myrtlebeachaccess.com/news/stories/2029558.htm Patti SURNAMES: Chicago&NJ-Coyne, Niehaus Mass- Baker, Bourne, Curtis, Chilton, Miller, Newton, Pope, Shaw, Snow, Standish, Warren, Winslow Virginia- Leitch, Purcell, Rowe Japan-Fujii England- Ollyver, Spinney, Tansley, Throckmorton, Warren, Waterman

Hi all, Here's a site to check out: http://www.rootsweb.com/~obituary/ offered by Rootsweb. From this site http://www.rootsweb.com/ you can access the Social Security Death Index. peg
Hi everyone, the USGenWeb Project also has started a project recording pension records. They need lots of volunteers to help. Here's the site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pensions/ peg
Thanks, Linda, for the tip about the records being online at the Lib. of VA. Here's the url I used to view the records. They're kinda hard to read but you can order them also. http://eagle.vsla.edu/conpen/ Thanks to Virginia for passing on the the National Archives site where you can order records, too: http://www.nara.gov/publications/gil3home.html
The confederate veterans' pension records are on line through the Va. State Lib. digital library. The entire pension record for my great grandfather that took me so long to find at the library in Richmond was right in front of me on my computer screen and I could print out as many copies as I wanted!! It's truly amazing!! Linda Use the following URL and then follow the prompts for info on confederate pensions. http://image.vtls.com:8000/lva/info.html

Frank, I found Stanfield C. Jones, Co. V, 9 VA. Cav., CSA in Greenlawn Cemetery buried next to a Skinner and a Boulware. I couldn't find his wife in any of the 3 cemetery books. Peg
Hi, This message is for Frank Pyle concerning information wanted on Eliza G.L. Raines Jones and her husband Stanfield C. Jones. Herbert Collins' book of Caroline County Virginia Death Records only records from 1919 through 1994. These obituaries have been retrieved from The Caroline Progress Newspaper. However, I found a Stanfield C. Jones buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Herb's Cemeteries of Caroline County, Volume I. The inscription under Stanfield's name is: Co. V, 9 Va. Cav. C.S.A. I would be happy to try to find the stone the next visit I make to Caroline and photograph it for you if you wish. There are a number of Raines burials in Greenlawn also according to the same book however no Eliza G.L. Raines. Hi, I would like to find Funeral Parlors in or around the Moss Neck (Or cemeteries) area of Caroline Co. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Frank Pyle
These are fascinating files - listing land of each household (developed, woodlands etc), all farm animals - even down to the number of pounds of cheese - They (at least the 1850) seem to be in the same order as the corresponding census - If you don't have MS Excel - I would try to find a specific person (if that doesn't violate copywrite http://departments.mwc.edu/hipr/www/research.htm U.S. Census Schedule 3: Census of Agriculture Agricultural census files cannot be easily displayed as web pages because of the width of the database (sixty columns). These files are supplied for downloading and use on your own computer. To save the file to your computer, select with the right mouse button and then select save. The file can then be opened locally if you have a spread sheet program that will open a Microsoft Excel 97 file format. Depending upon the configuration of your browser you may be able to select with the left button and see the file displayed in Microsoft Excel. An additional word of warning: These files were transcribed from xeroxed microfilm and have not been checked. They are provided as scratch files--essentially work-in-progress. For comparative information against all counties try the cumulative Virginia Agricultural Census, 1860 County - Caroline 1850 - 1860 - 1870 Orange 1850 - 1860 Spotsylvania 1850 - 1860
