Sharon, In Wingfield's book, there is a 3 page article on Samuel Schooler. In Campbell's book, there are some brief references to William Schooler. If you have a specific question about a date, I would be happy to check it out for you. Maybe there are Listers are there who are also digging around for Schoolers! peg
Scott, COLONIAL CAROLINE by T.E. Campbell has the following,"Bridges for a time threatened the emergence of Roy's as Caroline's chief center of trade. Since settlers first came into the region to be the county, the rambunctious Mattapony had frequently flooded and severed all routes for transportation which lay across its course. In 1738 after the bridges at Guinney's, Downer's, Doguetown and Burk's had all washed away, the planters of St. Margaret's began to clamor for a bridte across the Pamunkey at Littlepage's to connect them with warehouses at Crutchfield's in lower Hanover and in the new town of Richmond." At another reference to Downer's it has (Woodford.) All these points you mention are in basically the northwest part of the county. This book also has a map of the trade routes. That's about all I could find. Hope it helps. Maybe someone else on the List could offer more info. ************************** ************************************ Just a gentle reminder: If you answer someone's question, it would be really wonderful to post your answer on the List so that everyone can read and benefit. All this information shows up in the Rootsweb archives for anyone and everyone to draw from. Thanks! peg
The Caroline County VA Order Book describes the petition for a road in 1765 from Downer's Bridge by George Todd's house to Conway's warehouse touching on the plantation of George Holloway. In 1785 the County Court presented William Holloway for "turning" the public road leading from Garnett's Old Ordinary to Todd's. According to your best guess, would these be basically the same road? And what part of the county might they be found in? Many thanks for your help, and best wishes to you. Hi everyone, Looking at a December CAROLINE PROGRESS, there were a couple houses described (actually they were on their Candleight Tour) with photos. Since there have been questions about where certain homes are located, maybe this information might be helpful: The Roth House located at 240 N. Main Street in Bowling Green. It's owned by Mrs. Carolyn Roth and the original section of this home was built by the BARLOW family in 1878. The Shuler/Schuler House located at 121 Lakewood Drive in Bowling Green. It's owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shuler. "Located along scenic Lakewood Drive, this Victorian house was built by Russell BROADDUS in the late 1800's. It was constructed on a hill overlooking the pond where he and his brother operated a mill for many years. The house directly acroos the street was built by Russell's brother, Charles, and is similiar in design and construction. Lakewood Drive is a lovely and unspoiled leg of the old stage road, in existence for 300 years before the building of Rt. 301." Maybe someone could take a photo of both houses on their next visit to Caroline and submit it to the photo gallery?? :) Peg

My great grand father was William Reily HOLLAND whom I have traced back to circa 1820 in Floyd County, Virginia. On 27 December 1843 he married Mary Jane (Polly) MOORE in adjoining Franklin County, Virginia. Since their first son was "John Henry HOLLAND," circa 1849 in Floyd County, Virginia. Following naming patterns -- William Reily Holland's father may have been a "John Henry HOLLAND." Although William Reily Holland's birth is circa 1820, I have been unable to locate his parents in adjoining Southwestern Virginia counties. There is a possibility that William Reily Holland was born to a "John Henry HOLLAND and unknown" in another area and when he was in his early 20's he migrated to Southwest Virginia, married Polly MOORE, and they had 13 children -- most of whom grew up, married, etc., and died in Virginia. Would you please search your data bases and see if you have a "John Henry HOLLAND," who about 1820 had a son "William R. (Reily) HOLLAND" who either (a.) migrated away from his birth place or (b.) about whom nothing is known. And/or (c.) a "William Reily HOLLAND" in your data base about whom nothing more is known. I seem to have hit a stone wall on where "William Reily HOLLAND" came from. Anxiously awaiting your posting!!! Irby Hollans in Fairfax, Virginia ihollans@laser.net

Hello everyone, In the Jan. 5, 2000 issue of the CAROLINE PROGRESS there is an article about the Dickinson Cemetery. Thought maybe I would pass on a few quotes from the article which was written by A.G. Hutchins. Apparently a new subdivision is planned for the area and the concern is over the disturbance of the cemetery. I'll watch for updates in the coming weeks. "Only vague and worn down descriptions are left to tell the tale of the Old Dickinson Cemetery. The history of the location and dates of the gravesites vary due to the lack of written records. The Dickinson family were among one of the first settlers of Bowling Green in 1737. Records state that Dickinson purchased land that consisted of 900 acres, located off of what is now Main St. He built a house and plantation that had changed remarkably over the years, through the various owners and natural disasters. After the death of Mr. Dickinson and his wife, Dr. William Winston Roper bought the home and may have made some slight changes in the layout of where some of the slave quarters were and where some of the stables were. The family name of the home changed once again when the land was left to the daughter of Mr. Roper, Mrs. Sallie Raines. In turn she left the home to her son, Roper Raines, in 1932. The layout of the plantation has been lost over the years so the location of the burial sites is foggy. Documents found state that Mrs. Roper Raines was one of the informants that had said the location of the old gravesite was in a group of old locust trees that are about 30 yards east of the Old Dickinson house. Ten bodies are buried there and it is marked with one large monument. Today, these trees are no longer standing due to a storm that came through Bowling Green in 1969. It is not recorded whether or not the monument was knocked over or if the once standing iron gate fell during that storm. (Herb Collins is quoted as saying the monument was not moved, just things around it. He also states hearing about the locust trees being dug up.) Another local resident says Antioch Church was once used as a marker of the gravesite. Records show this church burned down but another was built right to the side of the original. Herb Collins describes in his book PRIVATE CEMETERIES, the location of the mass grave and that is can be found about 90 yards behind the Reynold home which is where the original Antioch Church stood. The Historical Society of Caroline County refused to comment when asked for information about the location of the cemetery...." I checked in Herb Collins's book and he further states that "at one time there were memorial windows in Antioch Christian Church to commerorate 2 people buried there: Festus and Elizabeth B. Dickinson. As a gift to their son, Col. A.G. Dickinson, the windows were dedicated Dec. 4, 1887, but destroyed when the church burned in the Spring of 1892." The names listed on this page were in addition to Festus and Elizabeth, their children Julia M., William Allen, Elizabeth B. and William Festus (son of William Festus and Julia M. Dickinson.) Also: Ellen B. Brashear, Mary Ann Brashear, Dr. Saml. Dickinson and his wife Evelina." (p. 56)
I am currently working on the microfilms for the years 1732-1785, and could do a look-up and short transcription or gist, IF : 1) you have the day/month/year of the entry, and 2) the handwriting for that entry is legible and not too faded. About 20-30% of the texts are extremely difficult to read. William Meacham, Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong. Another email address for me is: wmeacham@hkucc.hku.hk

Seeking anyone descended from Richard Hampton, who lived in Caroline Co and moved to Fauquier where he died in 1766 Regina Roper
JOHN AND THOMAS WINCHESTER were in GUILFORD COUNTY, NC maybe as early as 1768 or earlier. I am looking for any WINCHESTER that may have been in VIRGINIA prior to the date of 1768. I feel my Winchester family migrated from Virginia into North Carolina. Therefore, some 52 Counties list are being contacted in hopes someone has information on the WINCHESTER FAMILY in Virginia prior to 1768. Thank you, WARREN WINCHESTER

George Tiller(Tyler) of Caroline Co was born 1755 and may have resided temporarily in Spotsylvania or even in Louisa CoVa. A Daneil Tiller was involved in settling his father's estate(his presumed father, I should say) of Caroline Co in 1781. Thanks for your help. Hi everyone, I was recently sent an address for the Museum of the Confederacy: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vagenweb/vamuseum.htm Some were having trouble accessing the site. peg
Hi Michael, On the Caroline website is a GNIS map: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html If you type in Virginia and Caroline, over 500 places will show up. Perhaps you can help you find out where your gggrandparents' property is located. Good luck, peg price
