The Virginia Genealogist published a two part article on this family in Vol. 39, No. 1 & 2, entitled "Grandma Was Ann (Woolfolk) Dickinson!" This article heavily documents the intermarriage of the Dickinson (Dickenson), Gatewood, and Sizer families. There was another Dickinson {Dickenson} family in Caroline County that has already been published, but the book is out of print.

Do you have any more detail? Because of the absents of good quality stone for carving grave stones in Virginia, there are few that exist for the early colonial period. The few that do exist were brought from England by the very rich. Remember also that there was a large Quaker influence in Caroline County and this sect did not believe in the use of grave stones. For most people, graves were tended by those living, flowers kept there most of the year [European influence] or an object placed on the grave [African influence]. Particular trees and flowering plants were placed on graves as markers. However as the next generation died, as people moved westward, the location of the older graves were forgotten, etc. Many times the last request of a family leaving an area was for someone staying behind to place flowers on particular graves. Va Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Caroline?read=1330 Surname: Lewis, Brent, McNish ------------------------- Hello, I am looking for information on Elizabeth Lewis who married David McNish. David McNish was in Caroline County, VA when he inherited land in Fauquier County, VA in 1786. His wife was Elizabeth Lewis who claimed descent from the Brent Family of Tidewater Virginia. It is suggested that her ancestress was Mary Brent (daughter of Capt. Charles Brent and Hannah Innes) who married a Lewis. It is believed that Elizabeth and David's son Horatio McNish named his estate in Williamson County, Tennessee after the Brent family estates of Brenton and Woodstock. The town of Brentwood, TN is named after Horatio McNish's estate. Does anyone have any information on Elizabeth Lewis, the Lewis family or their connection to the Brent family? Or can anyone tell me where the estates of Woodstock and Brenton are located? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Christine McNish Link: Christine McNish's Home Page URL: <http://hometown.aol.com/Mcnishcm/index.html>

Hi folks: This isn't really an answer to the question, per se -- but is along the same lines. It actually deals with ancestors of mine that are buried at the Mattaponi Baptist Church in Mattaponi, King & Queen County, VA. Off the top of my head, I can't say how far back my info goes -- but it's well into the 1800's and could go back as far as 1700's. Keep in mind -- this is research done by others and is only in the one cemetery. So -- I guess I'm trying to say that while you may not find published resources for the old graves/cemeteries in CAROLINE COUNTY -- it's not to say the information cannot be found from other sources. As King & Queen County is right next to Caroline County -- and this info may give the two researchers some HOPE -- I thought I would pass it along!
