Smith but his wife was Rose Evie Chewning, the daughter of Thomas Lewis Chewning and Mattie Lewis Partlow. I have more information on them going back. I only have two children so far, listed for Evie and Lee, a daughter and a son named Thomas R. Smith. Thomas L. Chewning would have been my GGGG Grandmother Lucy Chewnings Great Grand-Nephew which means Rose Evie would be her Great Great Grand Niece. My GGGG Grandmother married John Rezin Smith prior to 1800, both were from Caroline Co. Va. There is another relative that married a Smith-Chewning in Culpeper. Sincere ly Tiffany Luchetta

    3. Posted on: Caroline Co. Va Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Caroline?read=1400 Surname: Rouse, Mason, Chinault, Pitts ------------------------- I have information on Samuel Fauntleroy Rouse and Elizabeth (Silva) Mason. They were married in Caroline Co. on June 21, 1867. His parents were Hayden Rouse and Matilda (Pitts) Rouse (Married Dec. 28, 1819). Her parents were Richard Mason and Nancy Chandler (Married Feb. 25, 1824). All this is in the Caroline County marriage records. The 1850 Census shows both families in Caroline County. Hayden Rouse was hard to find - he was not indexed but, after many hours squinting, I found him on pg. 284. The Census taker spelled his name Hadin but it's him, with wife Matilda and 8 year old Fauntleroy. In 1860 Hayden has apparently died but Matilda is living in the Central Point area. Samuel F. is now 17. Richard Mason is also listed but Nancy (Chandler) is now enumerated as 'Ann'. I find this significant because in Wingfield's 'History...' there is an Ann Coleman (sometimes called Nancy) who married William Chandler, second son of Robert Chandler. Also of interest in the 1860 Census is the listing for 'Philadelphia E. F.' who is the age that the Elizabeth listed in 1850 would be in 1860. By 1870 Fauntleroy has his own listing in the Bowling Green P.O. which is consecutive with Richard Mason. Elizabeth (Philadelphia E. F.) is married to shoemaker, George W. Silva, and living with her parents along with a bunch of other Silvas. By 1880 George W. Silva has apparently died and Elizabeth has remarried her neighbor Samuel Fauntleroy Rouse. They are enumerated in the Milford District. There is a listed, in the WPA's Historical Inventory of Caroline Co. from 1937, 'Mason's Old Home Place' located on Rt. 625, 4.6 miles southeast of Naulakla. It was owned by a Mr. Chandler who left it to his daughter. She married a Mr. Richard Mason. Samuel Fauntleroy Rouse was my Great, Great Grandfather. If anyone is interested I have quite a bit more information on this line I would be happy to share with any cousins out there.

    3. Posted on: Caroline Co. Va Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Caroline?read=1399 Surname: Skinner, Dillard, Atkinson ------------------------- I am looking for information on James Henry Skinner. He would have been born about 1836-37 in the Corbin area of Caroline Co. He may have been born on Feb. 15. I believe his parents were Joseph F. Skinner and Eleanor (Atkinson) Skinner. There is a 13 year old 'Henry' listed in the household of carpenter Joseph Skinner in 1850. On July 9, 1860 a 24 year old Henry Skinner married a 23 year old Sarah Anne Dillard. Henry's parents are listed as Jos. & Ellen Skinner. Sarah's are _______& Sarah A. Dillard. (The 1850 Census lists a 40 year old Anne E. Dillard with 16 year old daughter, Sarah A. - no father.) The 1860 Census confirms that 25 year old James H. Skinner, carpenter, has set up a home with wife, Sarah A. Skinner in the Guineys P.O. area. It also shows that they had been married within the year and James had attended school within the year. The record becomes somewhat confusing for the next several years. A Jas. H. Skinner enlists in 47th Va. Inf. on Apr. 1, 1862. In mid June of the same year, at Chimborazo Hospital No. 1, he dies. The cause is listed as 'continued fever'.On July 16, 1863 his widow, Sarah A. Skinner files a claim with the Confederate States Auditor, presumably for back pay. Then on Aug. 22, 1863 a James H. Skinner enlists in the 30th Va. Inf. He survives the war. His service record shows his place of residence as Caroline Co., Va. I have been unable to find any record of him after the war until 1904 when he files an 'Application for disability...' on which he lists his residence as Fredericksburg, Va. He disappears off the pension rolls in 1919. The first I can find Sarah Skinner after the War is in Port Royal Township on the 1880 Census. She is living by herself with four children, the youngest: Mary L. Skinner age 4. Where is her husband? He would have had to have been around up to at least 1875 or so to have a 4 year old daughter in 1880. In 1900 Sarah A. Skinner is living in Fredericksburg, Va. in the household of her son in law, Oscar Lewis, who married Mary L. She is listed as Mother of 5, 4 living. These would be: James Coleman Skinner (my ancestor, another carpenter) b. Apr. 8, 1861, Roberta A. (Brown?) b. 1865-66, Elizabeth (Macunaha?) b. Apr. 1870, William S. Skinner b. 1872-73, and Mary L. Lewis b. Apr. 1875, m. Oscar Lewis b. Apr. 1874 (a carpenter). I'm not sure which one died before 1900 but I think it might be Roberta because there are two Nephews in law, Alexander and Arthur, b. 1880 and 1890 respectively, that only Roberta would have been old enough to have, living with Orson Lewis. Pretty confusing, huh? The Civil War really made tracking down ancestors in Caroline Co. difficult, didn't it? I would appreciate help from any cousins out there. Thanks.

This day the plaintiff came by their Attorney and the defendent came not. It is considered by the Court that the Plaintiffs recover against the Defendent and Walter ROSS his security L14.16.4 current money.
