Posted on: Caroline Co. Va Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Caroline?read=1459 Surname: Noel, Taylor, Houston, Dillard ------------------------- I do not have any information on James and Lucy Southworth Noel. Have you tried the books 'Emigrant Cornelius Noel' by Jennie Noel Weeks or 'The Noell Family' by Millard Noell? Jennie was mistaken on our early ancestors but it was corrected in a later printing and is correct in Millard's book. Do you know the parents of James Noel (1864)? The Noell family is very confusing. They kept naming all the children the same name every generation and cousins of the same generation had the same names and were of course born about the same time.

Thanks to those who replied that the place in question was probably near the naval base. You're right, the Dahlgren base is in King George - I missed the county line on my map and thought it was still Stafford County. That is the Dahlgren I thought of too, but I wonder whether it existed under that name in 1864. There was an Admiral Dahlgren who served in the Civil War and I assume that the naval base is named for him, which would mean it probably was not called 'Dahlgren' until some time after the war. I don't know when the base was established. Perhaps it does date to the Civil War, though according to its web page, the current facility is only about 75 years old. However, given the state of military affairs in December of 1864, a naval base on the Potomac is pretty far north for a Virginia soldier to have been killed. Lee's army was besieged down at Richmond and Petersburg. Dahlgren would have been way behind the Union lines. Larry Dickerson
Does anyone on the list know of a place called 'Dahlgren' in or near Caroline County that would have existed in 1864? I am trying to decipher an entry in "Caroline County, Virginia Bureau of Vital Statistics - Death Records 1853-1896" by Herbert R. Collins. An entry for John B. Stevens, son of Elijah and Lucy Stevens, states that John was "killed near Dahlgren" on December 10th, 1864. (page 74) My atlas shows a Dahlgren in extreme eastern Stafford County near the naval center on the Potomac. I presume that this place is named for Admiral Dahlgren of Civil War fame and was probably not even there in 1864. The only other places with Dahlgren in their name are Dahlgren Junction, just outside Fredericksburg on Hwy 218 and Dahlgren's Corner, where 631 and 632 meet in King and Queen County. I have no idea whether either of them existed in 1864. Was there a farm or an estate in Caroline County called 'Dahlgren?' Was there a military skirmish at a place called Dahlgren - perhaps somewhere near Petersburg or Richmond? I can not find any mention of one, though if it was a small affair it might not have made the books. The only Civil War event with Dahlgren in the name was the cavalry raid toward Richmond, though that was six months or more before December 10th. I would appreciate any help in figuring this out. Hello all, Trying a new angle on my elusive BROWNS. Has there ever been a Quaker community in Caroline? If so, where is/ was it located? Any info greatly appreciated! Lynn
Oh, yes, there was a large Meeting in Caroline and Hanover Counties. They later all moved to another county, I think Bedford. Their meeting house in Caroline was at Golansville. There is an excellent article about this meeting in the current issue [Vol 9, No. 1, May/June 2000] of Tidewater Virginia Families. The site of the meeting house has now been found and detailed drawings of the area and possible cemetery are contained in this article. Norman Peters Washington DC
There is also a very active Historic Society called Historic Port Royal involved in restoring and preserving some of the wonderful buildings and houses in this quaint, quiet little town in Caroline Co. right on Rt 301. near the intersection with Rt. 17. I love this place! They are raising funds through the sale of pen and ink drawings done by a local artist of several of the beautiful homes in the town. Email me if anyone would like further info or would like to join the society. Linda
I realize that most of the Caroline Co., VA records for the time period 1810-1820 were destroyed. If I was looking for a will (or any othe record for that matter) for a gentleman who died in the 1820 time period, what would be my chances of finding a copy elsewhere or some mention of it in the surviving Caroline Co., VA records? Your response is appreciated. C. Ward CMW12635@aol.com

Va Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Caroline?read=1449 Surname: SAMUEL ------------------------- Seeking information about Addison,Addison L.,Henry E.,Marie,Sallie,Julia A.,James,Joseph,John, and Phillip SAMUEL. The 1860 U.S. Census,Slave Schedule, shows Julia A. The 1870 Census shows James,Maria, and Sallie Samuel. In a deed in Spotsylvania County, VA, Addison and Addison L. gave land to my great grand parents Rosa and Samuel Diggs, and Henry E. SAMUEL. Julia SAMUEL married Addison SAMUEL. Julia had 3 sons, James,John, and Joseph. Julia later married Isaac Lawson and had a son Elmore Lawson. I believe Rosa maiden name was SAMUEL. Also, I believe Nellie Ann was a SAMUEL, because she also received land from Addison and Addison L. SAMUEL. I believe Addison was married to Nancy before he married Julia A. Samuel. Therefore, Addison and Nancy had Nellie Ann and Rosa. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
