    2. Tom Taylor
    3. Posted on: Caroline Co. Va Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Caroline?read=1512 Surname: ------------------------- With respect to James Taylor I, born England Ca 1635, and whose great grandson James Taylor IV resided at "Midway", Caroline County, VA. There is absolutely no proof that James I was born near Carlisle. In fact, Pennington House, which is a house associated with the Taylor family is in County Hampshire. James I, after he located to America, probably lived at a location called Bloomsbury (now vacant land) in King and Queen County. His son, James II, lived at Bloomsbury, Orange County, VA. built in 1722 and still extant. Contact me for more info.

    1. Henry RAINS
    2. David S. Rains
    3. Posted on: Caroline Co. Va Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Caroline?read=1511 Surname: RAINS, LANE, TURNER, MARSEE, WHITAKER, SYKES ------------------------- Henry RAINS was born in 1767, in Johnston County, NC, not 1750. He died in 1838 in Knox County, KY. He married Martha Patsy LANE, not TURNER. Henry was son of John RAINS, 1742-1772, and Mary INGRAM. Henry was grandson to Henry RAINS, Esquire, ca. 1700-1786, and Ann OLIVER, of Johnston County, NC. Henry RAINS, 1767-1838, was stepson to Captain Thomas LEE, 1726-1818, who married Mary INGRAM RAINS after her husband died. Henry RAINS was raised in Hawkins County, TN, where Captain Thomas LEE moved to from Johnston County, NC. Henry RAINS had eight half brothers and sisters named "LEE" and none named "RAINS." Henry RAINS and Martha Patsy LANE had children to marry into the TURNER, KING, DAVIS, MARSEE, SNUFFER, KELLEMS and DENNY families. Henry RAINS, Esquire, named his children John, Ambrose, Oliver, Ann and Elizabeth, which are very similar names to those used by Henry RAINS of Caroline County, VA, who died about 1766. I believe there is a connection between these two Henry RAINS men, possibly through a common grandfather. That common grandfather could have been William ANDERSON RAINS. Any help will be appreciated, and I am certainly glad to share info. with anyone interested in this family. Thanks!

    1. Golansville Meeting House is commissioned with marker
    2. *The Caroline Progress* date June 7, 2000 has a front page article about the Golansville Quaker Meeting House and Cemetery site being identified and documented by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and a marker placed on the site. The ceremony was conducted at the intersection of US Rt. 1 and County Route 601 (Cedar Fork Rd.) in Caroline. "Quakers held their first meeting nearby in March 1739 together with their partner Cedar Creek Friends Meeting of Hanover County. At a 9 May 1767 meeting, members issued a call to their fellow Quakers to end slaveholding, the first such movement in Virginia. The Friends' testimony against slavery contributed to declining membership as many immigrated west to free states. The Caroline Friends continuedutcheson Davis of "Tidewater Virginia Families' to use their meeting house and burying ground until 1853. They then joined Cedar Creek and ultimately became Richmond Friends Meeting...." 1. Kelley surname
    2. Genevieve, Hi, I saw your inquiry today and noticed that your surname list included the Kelley family. I'm trying to find info on my g grandfather who was born in VA in 1821. Unfortunately I don't have a location. His name was Robert (Voss?) KELLEY. He married a lady named Susannah (no maiden name) and they eventually moved to Washington County, OH in the mid 1840s. In 1860, Robert moved the family to Ralls County, MO. I was wondering if your Kelley's and mine might be the same????? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Rocky Kelley

    1. Migration Project suggestions
    2. Hello everyone, A suggestion has been made to start a Caroline Migration Pattern project. If you go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~vagenweb/migrtion.htm you can see some of the counties who have such a project and how they have set it up. (I personally like the Prince William County format, and not just because this is my home county!) I would be happy to set up something similiar for us but would love your feedback on how you'd like it to look and what to include, etc., etc. So far, we've not located an actual map of the migration patterns but we're still looking. Thanks! peg

    1. Thomas Young & Frances Mason Family
    2. Laurence E. Dickerson
    3. I am interested in finding information on the family of Thomas Young and Frances W. Mason who were married in Caroline County on December 23, 1823. I believe Frances was a daughter of William [sometimes Willis] Mason and Sally Kelly. Frances was born c. 1800 and was still living as of August 7, 1850, the date of the census. Thomas had evidently died prior to that date. Frances and Thomas had at least five children, listed below: 1) Sarah W. Young: b.c. 1828. Married Isaac Lee Eubank on December 20, 1852. They had no children. Sarah died, probably c. 1856. Isaac remarried some time between September 19, 1857, and March 5, 1858. His second wife was Virginia E. Dyson, a daughter of James Dyson and Sarah Mason. Sarah Mason was a sister of Frances Mason Young, so Sarah W. Young and Virginia Dyson would have been first cousins. 2) Paulina E. Young: b.c. 1831. No further information 3) Eliza Jane Young: b.c. 1834 (Possibly on February 25). Married Woodford Edward Long (b.c. 1828) in 1853. They had two known children, both of whom died young: James, b.c. 1858, d. August 1862; and Morgan, b.c. December 1863, died May 1864. Eliza died in Caroline County on October 28, 1885. Woodford survived her. 4) Joseph W. Young: b.c. 1837. Enlisted in the Caroline Light Artillery as a corporal on July 23, 1861, at Bowling Green. Promoted to sergeant c. July 23, 1862. Paroled at Richmond April 21, 1865. Working as a carpenter in Caroline County in 1882. 5) Mary E. Young: b.c. 1839. Married Henry H. Young (b. August 1, 1841). [Henry was a son of Maynard Dyson and Agnes Long, and Agnes was a sister of Woodford Long who had married Eliza Young.] Mary and Henry had six known children: Nellie F., b.c. 1865; Joseph T., c. 1868 - December 12, 1893; Idella L., b. April 1870; Henry Walter, April 1873; an unnamed son b.c. 1877, died in 1877 at the age of seven months, and Fannie W. Dyson, born c. 1879. Mary E. Young Dyson died in Caroline County November 16, 1881. Henry remarried, probably c. 1883, to Ann W. [ ? Dyson ?] and had at least twelve more children. He committed suicide in Caroline County February 10, 1915. When did Frances Mason Young die? When was Thomas Young born and when did he die? Were there more children than the five listed above? Did Joseph W. Young have a son named Edgar W. Young born c. 1859? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to answer any of these questions, or add anything at all to what I have regarding this family.

    1. Caroline migration map available?
    2. Hello, Someone asked me the following question about the availability of a migration map for Caroline. peg ******************************************** My Beazleys left Caroline County in 1837 and traveled to Sumter Co., AL. They were 46 days on the road. I have noticed that some GenWeb sites have a section called "Migration Patterns." Do you know of a site that lists the roads a family might have used to leave Caroline County and move to AL? It has been suggested that they might have gone an easterly route to avoid the mountains. I just need a map with all the old roads. Thanks. Jean (Beazley) Guice
