Linda, Charles City County is south east of Caroline Co. at the present time. Charles City county was formed in 1634 and at least 14 counties have come from it over the years. New market is in the northern Shenandoah Valley and not very close to Caroline Co. Charles City is just 2 or 3 counties away from Caroline. the 16 Aug 200 *Caroline Progress* has an article on Shiloh Church. Here are some intereting excerpts from it: "Shiloh Church was organized in 1832 and became a part of Caroline Circuit, Virginia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Previous to this a Methodist Church called White's stood near Bagby Post Office. After a camp meeting was held in 1827 on the land on which Shiloh now stands, the congregration outgrew the small building called White's. An acre of land was donated to the church by Silas J. Broaddus, on which the small original church was built. In 1885 work was begun on a new church building. The old meeting house was sold to Woodford S. Broaddus (son of Silas J. Broaddus) and was used as a barn until it was destroyed by high winds. Lumber for the new church was donated and prepared by hand. Almost all of the construction work was done by the men of the church under the supervision of James Fox. Worship services were conducted in the new building before it was completed, the congregration seated on sills and the Rev. Dr. J. T. Mastin preaching from a makeshift pulpit. It is believed that the first Sunday School for Shiloh was organized in April 1880. Shiloh continues to have a strong Sunday School. The Women's Society of Christian Service (United Methodist Women) records date back as far as 1916 but was in existence before that time. This group is still active. .....Today, Shiloh United Methodist Church is enjoying a great ministry under our present pastor, the Rev. Terry L. Clark." (I do not know who wrote this article but it was found on p.5. and has an accompanying photo of the church.) peg
James CHANDLER signed the marriage bond for Richard MASON and Nancy CHANDLER, 25 Feb 1824 in Caroline County Virginia. The same date, James CHANDLER took out a marriage bond for himself to marry Malinda BELL. I believe they lived in the Bowling Green district until James and Malinda moved their family to Ross County OH around 1844; Richard and Nancy MASON remained in Caroline County. According to "People, Postoffices, and Communities in Caroline County, Virginia 1727-1969" Compiled by The Rev. Ralph Emmett Fall in 1989 in McDonough, Georgia, a community called Passing aka Eaglenest was located in the Bowling Green District at the intersection of Rts 665 and 625 at the eastern edge of Ft. A.P. Hill near the Essex County Line. He notes that what was known as MASON's place was originally erected around 1800 as a log cabin and later remodeled. The original owner was CHANDLER, and at his death it went to his daughter who married Richard MASON. The place stayed in the MASON family until it was purchased in 1901 by J.W. Sylva, who was the owner in 1937. In the same compilation, Mr. Fall identifies James CHANDLER as paying taxes in 1838 in the community of Passing. If anyone knows anything about the CHANDLER-MASON property mentioned in this compilation; the relationship of James and Nancy CHANDLER; the parents of James and Nancy CHANDLER; or can provide any other information about these families and this location, please let me know.
