    3. Virginia, thanks so much for responding. I don't know for sure that her surname/maiden name was JONES. Just was wondering if anybody out there had come up with same. This would be a good, good clue to your theory being right: 1870 > VIRGINIA > CAROLINE > PORT ROYAL TWP (Bowling Green P.O.) VA (Note: Entry for "race" for Wm is B (black) I found a "Bettie Jones", age 20 in Bowling Green Subd. Dist. This could be "Bertie". But she is a "black female servant", living with a white family. HH = Rubin Richardson. Although one of Bertie's brother's name was "Rubin", I seriously doubt this is my Bertie. I say "my Bertie" 'cause she gave birth to Charles H. ENGARD 1872 who is found in the 1880 cenus with his grandfather, Charles W. JONES. I traced the Jones Family back and found Bertie, and have made contact with the descendants who know less than I do. However, one descendant pulled from her mother that the father was thought to be Thomas Jefferson ENGARD. They never married. Then one researcher on the Philly list came up with Thomas C. Thomas. We are probably headed in the wrong direction. I've ordered a death certificate for Charles H. ENGARD. However, I will be totally surprised if it names his father as it was never discussed. Charles did claim to be one of thirteen children, if the descendant has that information straight. Sorry so long. I've not come up with father of your Thomas C., but did notice a Thomas CATLETT living next door to a Sarah Thomas in the 1850 Caroline Co. census, listing Thomas C. as 5 year old, among others. Looks like Sarah may be a widow or "deserted". I'm familiar with the CATLETT name as my Aunt worked for a CATLETT in Tulsa, OK early 1900's. And my mother's first husband had a sister who married a CATLETT. I love the name. How could anyone forget it? In a message dated 4/2/2005 11:52:14 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > So I did...but from what it told me in the book that all Indians were > remarked as everything other then White or Indian... I believe that for whatever reason, the Temple Grimes family, along with sisters Martha Frauyhue (Fraughnaugh) and Gabriella (Fraughnaugh) Dollings were the only Indians identified as such in the 1870 Caroline Co. census. In the 1880 census, Temple Grimes remains identified as Indian, but the rest of his family is identified as mulatto. I would love to know why they were identified as Indians, when all of the other Indians were not. My understanding is that prior to 1870, Indians were not included in the census. The 1870 census directions state that "Be particularly careful in reporting the class 'mulatto." The word is here generic, and includes quadroons, octoroons and all persons having any perceptible trace of African blood. Important scientific results depend upon the correct determination of this class in schedules 1 and 2." Also, "'Indians not taxed' are not to be enumerated in schedule 1. Indians out of their tribe relations and exercising the rights of citizens under state or Territorial laws will be included. In all cases, write "Ind." in the column for color." Assistant Marshalls were asked to list all non-taxed Indians in a separate report to the census office. See, Measuring America... I have never heard anyone suggest that any of the Rappahannock Tribal members were Melungeon. That just seems so unlikely to me, given the history and location of the Tribe. Nikki

I actually looked further into it..and Mr. Winkler from I believe a Tennessee tribe emailed me and told me to get a book called "Pocahanta's People" by Helen Rountree. So I did...but from what it told me in the book that all Indians were remarked as everything other then White or Indian...The names are pretty horrible to me...but that was the status back then...I have family pictured in the book like Captain Nelson..which I believe is Otho Nelson's son. They never stated that they were melungeon..but the fought in 1930 to have our status changed to indian...So on the 1930 Census under R.P. Nelson and Vivian Nelson...we are crossed out as "m" and written in as Mixed Blood then Rappahannock Tribe..Sorry I go in such detail...its so interesting to me where my history has been and really need some help figuring out exactly what we are...or were. None of the family would admitt to being Melungeon. If you look up Chief Captain Nelson of the Rappahannock Tribe in Virginia..there ar! e alot of links and one is about Melungeon. That my help your interest.. Are you anyway related to the Nelsons in Caroline County? Thanks again Jenn

    3. I am researching my 5th great-grandparents, Lawrence and Henrietta Catlett Campbell. Prior to 1764, they were members of St. Mary's Parish in Caroline County, according to a land deed on file in Orange County. Henrietta is thought to have been born ca 1735 and is most likely to have been born in Caroline County. LDS church records say her middle name was Amerilla and her father's name was John Neal Catlett, although no proof was provided. I am looking for Henrietta's parents and further back. If anyone has any information on her lineage and is willing to share it with me, I would be very appreciative. Thanks, Mike Gentry [email protected]

Taylor owner of Hazelwood & Hayfield property? According to Court Record Data This John Taylor died in 1824. I am getting confused with all the John Taylors Court Record Data states: 1.John Taylor, Jr. held Liberty Hill during his life. 2.Hazelwood & Hayfield property of John Taylor dec'd 1824 3.Liberty Hill property of John Taylor Sr 4.Palestine property of Dr. John Taylor 5.John Taylor Jr. Caroline Co. 1853 Will 6.John Taylor Caroline Co. 1824 Family: John Taylor Jr. & wife Lucy Children: Edmund Taylor, John Taylor Children of John Taylor Jr. & his last wife ?; Bazil Taylor, Agnes Taylor, James Taylor & Bernard Taylor It would appear that the family of John Taylor, Sr. were children: William Taylor, John Taylor, Jr., Henry Taylor, George Taylor & Edmund Taylor. It seems that these John Taylor's held property in Caroline, Essex, King George, Stafford and Rappahannock Counties. I am looking for information on a John C. Taylor married to a Judith Cooke Terrier d/o Francis Terrier & his wife Elizabeth Crewdson and resided in Stafford County. This John C. Taylor and his wife Judith had a daughter Ann Elizabeth Taylor who married William Henry Miller and resided in Rappahannock Co. at "Poplar Shade" Plantation her lifetime. I am wondering if there might be a connection to one of the John Taylor's of Caroline County. Any help is most appreciated. Thank you.

My line included Lewis Conquest Booker, son of Lewis Booker and Jane Wyatt, Lewis being the son of James Booker of Gloucester. Another part of this line settled in Essex County and some confusion was associated with two Lewis Booker's --- They were son's of brother - and all descendants of James Booker of Gloucester. I have one photo taken of my gg grandfather Cornelius P. GILMAN taken with a GATEWOOD lady in 1853,He was abt age 9.Cornelius married Sophia Letitia HOUSTON. Her mother was Elizabeth GATEWOOD. On the 1850 census I find living with my ggg grandfather,James R.P.HOUSTON, Attaway CHAPMAN and Sarah E.GATEWOOD. I believe, but not sure that Attaway CHAPMAN married a HOUSTON. Cornelius' mother was Eliza P. HARGRAVE and father William GILMAN. Does anyone have any information on these families they are willing to share? Thanks Karen Martin
