This is to apologize for a e-mail sent last Wednesday to this and other lists sent by my niece but written by me and I never intended it to be sent. Once written, my anger was released and I thought better. However, my niece can go from Lady to the word use for female dog in 4.2 seconds. I did not realize she had sent the message until the next morning. That being say, some good things came form the e-mail. 1. After a discussion with AOL, I now get it for $7.00 less. 2. Many e mails were sent in agreement. 3. The lady who ripped me off has now listed my research as hers on her web site, with the a Mulatto slave as the great grandfather of her husband. She said she did the research herself. 4. She sent to me updated information about her family with birthdays and maiden names of living people. Smart enough to ripped me off, dumb enough to send that information to a total stranger. On the downside after doing genealogical research for thirty-three years and having two articles published in The American Genealogist, I will now quit genealogy. I will leave it to the new breed of Internet Genealogists that have no sense of right or wrong. So no need to unsubscribe me for an apology, I will do that soon myself. Thank You Tonto Bernstein
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Nichols Nicholls Owen Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IBC.2ACI/2472 Message Board Post: Are there any researchers with information pertaining to the Nichols or Nicholls family of Caroline County, around 1728-1740 I've been able to trace my family back to John Nichols, born around 1698 in Virginia. John married Mary Owen, daughter of Richard Owen (as evidenced by Richard Owen's will). John Nichols was given 7000 acres of land in Halifax Co., VA by the Council of VA in 1743/44. He began selling land that he owned in Goochland County after 1744. This land was purchased in 1733 from Elizabeth Wright, and the transaction reads "from Elizabeth Wright to John Nicholls of Caroline County." Therefore, we've now traced John Nichols/Nicholls to Caroline County. Caroline County was formed in 1728 from King and Queen, Essex and King William counties. Since most of the records from this area were destroyed in the Civil War, I've been having a hard time determining the families' ancestry before the land purchase in 1733. I was able to find a petition signed by two individuals, William Nichols and Richard Owen. The petition was regarding the leader of St. Stephen's Parish in New Kent County and is dated 1682, 9 years before the formation of King and Queen County. According to another researcher, the issues raised in the petition were basis for the formation of the new county. Therefore, I believe William Nichols is the father of my ancestor John Nichols. Does anyone have any other information on the Nichols, Nicholls, or Owen families of Caroline County, Virginia?
I am new to the Caroline County mailing list. I am researching the following family names: MADISON, CARTER, BRADLEY. Looking for parents of Frank Madison b abt 1882, married Laura Bell Smith b abt 1885. Also looking for parents of Laura. Have lots of information on Carter. My husband's gg grandfather was John Melzer Carter, who is a desendent of Captain Thomas Carter. Looking for parents of Thornton H. Bradley b abt 1813. Believe he married Francis Kidd, and then Martha T. (last name unknown). -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, May 05, 2005 4:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [VACAROLI] May Roll Call Hi all... My research on the Vaugh(a)s in South Carolina have peaked my interest in Caroline Co., VA. There are three Rev War Soldiers of main interest. 1. JOEL VAUGHAN - On 1790 Federal SC Census - moved on with daughter but also lived to be over 104l d. MS - REV WAR "of Caroline Co., VA." on pension application. 2. THOMAS VAUGHAH - Drew pension in Spartanburg Co., SC - "of Caroline Co., VA." 3. JOHN VAUGHAN - Drew pension in Spartanburg Co., SC - very little data on pension application so don't know if from Caroline Co., VA, or not. Thomas and John are on the 1840 Spartanburg Federal Census and listed as Rev War Soldiers. All three given names run through my family so I'm really stumped and have hit my brick wall. Can anyone please help me? Thanks, Shirley McCoy [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])
Shirley, I checked my book of marriage and Death notices from the Charleston Observer for your surname. It's listed those from 1827 to 1845 so it's pretty limited and no name showed up. Sorry it didn't help. But it does tell you where information won't be. [email protected] wrote:My research on the Vaugh(a)s in South Carolina have peaked my interest in Caroline Co., VA. Well I don't know if it's any help but I would check with some of the scottish rites org's that have the surname research. Campbell is most certainly a scotish name. You could take that route with the Scottish descent. There is also something at Rootsweb about the Scotch Irish base first established in the colonies. Son of William Johnston and Ann Chew. Married, about 1762, Dorothy Waller, daughter of William Waller and Ann Stanard. Married, second, Ann Smith. With Dorothy, had Ann (1766-67) and Richard Waller Johnston (1768-91) and, I'm pretty sure, an older son, William Waller Johnston (c.1764-1823) who moved to Green County (the part that is now Taylor County) Kentucky before 1820 and died there. I'm not sure of Richard Johnston's attachment to Caroline County. His father, William, was a merchant there but, in 1763, William sold some land to Richard "of Spts. Co." (Crozier) and other documents show him living in Culpeper in 1768 and 1769. However, a Richard Johnston was a member of the Caroline County Committee of Safety in 1774-76. I'd be happy to hear from any descendants of this numeous tribe of Johnstons. Hi Janet I have some Taylor's in my Sutton family: James Sutton (1750-1795) married as his second wife Elizabeth Taylor daughter of Col Francis Tayor and his wife Ann Craddock. Also John Carter Sutton married Elizabeth Page Pendleton in 1817. She was daughter of Edmund Pendleton of Edmundton and his wife Jane Burwell Page. By the way I have a copy of the book The Suttons of Caroline County by T Dix Sutton robert Shotzberger
Would anyone know if the early Young families, namely Richard Young and a Laurence Young have any early connection to the Carr and Chiles family? I have a later connection through a Walter Chiles Carr, daughter named Nancy Carr, who married Richard Young. Also a brother of Nancy Carr, Thomas Carr married Richard's half sister, Patsy Young. They lived in Fayette and Jessamine County Kentucky in the 1770 to 1850 time frame. Jeff Jeppson
I am seeking information about the Turner family of Carolina County, Virginia I know that Richard arrived in Virginia from England with wife and young son John b 1690 (the date of birth is est) d 1742 sometime before 1704, when his name first appeared in the tax records of King and Queen County. This does not state that Richard did have other children but on the reseacher was only look for John Turner what I do know that M. Jeanette O'Boyle, 449 Pump House Road, Murphysboro, Illinois 62966- 9246 Stated: "The earliest that I have record of our Turner family is in the Caroline County, Virginia, order book which lists the Turners from the beginning of the county being cut out of King and Queen County, Virginia. In the late 1730's Richard Turner gives land to his four sons, Richard, James, John, and Lewis. Later in the early 1740's Richard dies and lists Richard as the heir and James as the executor. At this time Virginia was under the English rule in which only the eldest son inherited and the next oldest was the executor. Before the will could be executed apparently the son Richard had died with no heirs and as the next oldest James inherited with Lewis becoming the executor with mother Elizabeth and sister Margaret assisting. This means the John was not living at this time since he was the next oldest and would have been the next executor. There is no way that the sister Margaret would have been made an executor if another son was living. My files are packed away in a box but I think the date of old Richard Turner's will was 1744. There is a Richard Turner listed on the tax lists in King & Queen in 1704. This may be our Richard Turner; however there is another Turner family in the same region, probably relatives, and this Richard may be from it.This may be our Richard Turner; however there is another Turner family in the same region, probably relatives, and this Richard may be from it. Most of these records were burned in the Civil War. In Caroline County only the order book remains with the details of the order book having been burned. The orphan hearing of Meshack, Abednego, Elizabeth, and Sarah is in 1746, I believe. At this time Shadrack must have been sixteen so he would not have needed a guardian. Members of the Turner family and Meadows family were appointed as guardians. I have never found mention of a son named John as a brother of these children and do not think there was one. According to the English naming scheme the names Richard, James and Lewis would have been used before the name John. Both James and Lewis named their sons John. The scheme goes first son after father of father, second after father of mother, third after father's oldest brother, and so on; the girls were named the same only after mothers. If the Richard Turner was our Richard Turner then there is no way that Shadrack could have been born in England. I thik he was born in Caroline County, Virginia Henry County was cut from Bedford and Franklin Counties. James Turner had moved to Bedford County from Caroline County in the late 1750's or early 1760's. I do not know who Shadrack's wife was but the popular tradition is that she was Ann Hill, especially since lots of the time brothers married sisters and I believe Meshack married a Hill, also. What is known however is that Shadrack and Meshack were brothers. Some people claim to have extended the family line further. Researchers making the connection to Richard and to the children below base their work on information taken from the Caroline County, Virginia Order Book from 1744. Based on the asumption that John died before the 1742 probate of Richard Turner's estate, the death of his wife around 1744 resulted in their children being assigned to a guardian.
