Diane & Julia, Since you both are interested in the dissemination of the information you have collected on your family, I suggest that you get in touch with Gail Moore (see earlier). She has just finished starting her own web site to do the same thing. She will be able to give you some advice. Lorris G. Cockerham, Ph.D. 3006 Hinson Road Little Rock, AR 72212-2712 501-227-4224
Gail, I thought about the fact that David & Walter might be living with someone else in 1860, but then wouldn't their names at least show up on the Ancestry.com 1860 index which lists everyone in each household? They both enlisted in the Caroline Light Dragoons and fought in Virginia, so they ought to be in Virginia somewhere. I have looked EVERYWHERE. I've even browsed the entire Caroline Co. census page by page to no avail. Julie Gail Moore <[email protected]> wrote: If Diane does not have a suggestion, I happen to have one perhaps. It could be they are not showing up if using an index of only Heads of Household as they may have been living for a time with another family in a place where they wanted to enlist at. My Andrew Jackson on one of the US Censuses if found under this manner.................................. His Mother and siblings left and went to Fulton Co., GA he is still back in Cherokee Ct. AL with a neighbor family awaiting to enlist into the 19th AL. Inf. out of Centre............... Just a thought! Diane, I haven't been following this discussing, but you are doing exactly the same thing with your research that I am....I'm not to the point where I'm comfortable putting it all online. No particular reason. Part of it is because I don't know how to do it either! (LOL) Anyway, I have a particular question for you. I have never been able to find my husband's great-grandfather David Cash on the 1860 Virginia census. He lived and died in Caroline County and is on every other census between 1840-1910. He did fight in the Civil War, so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with his not being enumerated. Interestingly, David's brother Walter Cash (who also fought in the war) is not on the 1860 census either. Recently I had a chance to help someone locate their ancestors on the 1860 census in Kentucky and Illinois....same thing. They are nowhere to be found in 1860. Have you run across this type of thing with any of your ancestors who fought in the war? If so, do you have an explanation since the war did not even start until the following year? My line is Frances Jones father John Jones. This what do know Southside Virginia Families" by John Bennett Boddie - page 228 states Elizabeth Frances Jones, daughter of John Jones, married Joel Halbert abt 1740. From Old Rappahannock & Essex Co. Marriages - Book D27, page 71. John Jones is said to born c 1700 d c 1795, I can find not record for him. Frances is said to born c 1700/05 unknown death date Caroline Co., Va Order Bk 1755-1763 p 272. Date 1762 On motion of Frances Halbert, widow and relict of Joel Halbert dec'd, administrator on the estate, is granted to the said Frances Halbert, she having been given bond according to law. p. 491 Date:? Frances Halbert qualified (their mother) to wards William, John, Elizabaeth, Martha, Frances and Joel. Order Bk 1764-67, p 72, March Court 1764 William, John & Elizabeth Halbert with the approbation of the Court made choice of Frances Halbert as their guardian. [Making choice signifies they were of the age of 14 or above but under 21]. p. 161. June Court 1764 On motion of Frances Halbert, she appointed guardian of Martha, Frances and Joel Halbert, orphans of Joel Halbert, dec'd and the said Frances Acknowledged a bond for same. (These three then were under the age of 14.) Okay, if William was born Oct 14, 1744, in 1764 he wouldn't have been a minor long. And if John WAS the oldest, as some records have shown, and older than William,he would have been older than 21 at the date of these guardian bonds, and would then not have needed a guardian. This means that William was over 14 and his siblings were under 14 making them minors. Janet Ariciu

Oh, this is one of those stories handed down from generations and there were so many acts of bravery in the building of our nation that this is insignificant except to his descendants. The sad thing is that one of the brothers died that day and later another died of smallpox during the war - there were 9 brothers in this family and all served! There were three captains, two lieutenants and the rest were privates - all brave men. So many of the feats of heroism can never be documented - it is up to us to keep their legacy alive! That's very sad, and should be changed and made right today. If other stuff can get changed why not his. Can you prove your story of him hiding in the woods and such. If so I would give it a try. I mean he risked his life side by side with his brothers, he did later join a unit so I don't see why it would be such a terrible thing to make a correction. I mean I think our founding fathers and earlier ancestors deserve the very best after what all they did to make this country the place we call home today! If it were not for them we would be in a real pickle! Hi - I have only seen lists of soldiers in the state where they served - not their birth states - I don't think they had the capability of keeping those lists back then... in fact, most of us are very fortunate if we can find the unit our ancestors served in! Just recently I found my York ancestor and disappointed the entire family by informing them he was a private not a captain! So it goes... most were privates! I know another ancestor was at King's Mountain, but he was underage and just followed his older brothers, keeping to the woods until the battle when he joined them and it was too late to send him home....later he joined a unit... and you will never find his name on any King's Mountain list! ;-( Diane ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, June 18, 2005 11:29 PM Subject: [VACAROLI] Re: VACAROLI-D Digest V05 #89 Hi Diane, Yes, Joel Vaughn served from Rutherford Co., NC BUT was born in Caroline Co., so it does say something, right? Does anyone on this list happen to have a copy of the Org. will of Daniel Cockerham of Caroline, Co. VA? Did a William Cockerham leave a will there also? Gail Moore [email protected]
at the time he served in the Rev. I read that he was living in N.C. - thus he might possibly be found on the lists in that state...
