There are three species of Poisonous Snakes in Va., Cottonmouth Moccasin, Rattle Snake and Copperhead. They are all dangerous and should not be handled. Most all snakes hibernate during the freezeing season, usually between November and April. Do not lift old tin, boards or other material under which a snake can hide. Rattle snakes give a warning by rattling the rattles on their tail. Copperheads are sneaky and will strike from the weeds beside a path, water moccicans are usually near creeks or rivers and will bite in the water as well as on land. Carry a strong stick and beat the weeds ahead of you and usually the snakes will run away. Good Luck! G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
There will probably be snakes in the area but most likely won't bother you. Just make make a little noise when in the woods and wear sturdy shoes and socks. Most of the snakes are nonpoisonous. The cottonmouth water moccasin and copperhead are the poisonous ones. They have hooded eyes while the nonpoisonous ones have round eyes. A sturdy stick probably wouldn't hurt either. Just be alert and you should be okay. Usually they are as scared of you as you are of them. You also need some sort of insect repellent for mosquitoes and chiggers. Check your skin for ticks too. Wearing a hat helps. Also watch out for poison ivy. It has 3 shiny leaves with a reddish stem. Leaves of three, let them be. Be sure to take a shower when you come in from tramping in the woods if you've been near poison ivy. The itchy rash can make you miserable. http://poisonivy.aesir.com/ Don't mean to scare you. Where you are going may be fully developed and you might not find yourself tramping through the woods. Edith > From: [email protected] > Thanks for the information. Thanks for the information. I was planning on the end of August beginning of September. I live in California. Are the snakes poisonous ? I have been trying to study maps from the civil war and locate properties and where cemeteries are. Thank you Tiffany
Winter is the best time to avoid snakes in VA. A friend just found a black snake in her bedroom closet. Scary. Edith > From: [email protected] > Diane > > I am planning a trip to Caroline and Spotsylvania Counties at the end > of summer. Could you tell me when snake season is. Depends on the snake. You might want to take a quick online course of poisonous snakes. As you can see from my signature line, I do a lot of cemetery photography, so here's some advice: <G> 1. Buy hiking boots that come above the ankles. I bought a cheap pair from Walmart. They don't have to be high quality, just protection from snakes, ticks and chiggers (if you don't know what chiggers are, you are DEFINITELY not from the south.) 2. Carry a fully charged cordless phone. If yours has analog, as well as digital reception, all the better. (Cemeteries are rarely near cell towers) 3. WEAR bug spray and sunscreen. You will get busy and forget the time. Be prepared. Also wear JEANS or long pants. No shorts or skirts. Pants give you added protection against bugs and snake bites. 4. Carry something to cut back weeds. Big brush should be avoided. THINK SNAKES We also carry a small whisk broom for getting rid of dirt and dust. If you move a flower arrangement, PUT IT BACK. 5. Ask permission before entering a cemetery. It might be your great-great grandfather, but your second cousin living next door and his rifle don't know that. I promise he will shoot and ask questions at the emergency room later. Don't risk it. 6. Buy a good digital camera that uses AA batteries and LOTS of memory. Take lots of images from lots of angles. You won't regret it. The camera batteries that come with the camera don't last that much longer than a good pack of AA batteries (name brand ONLY) and you can't buy those specialty batteries at the convenient store in down town Podunk Holler. 7. Snakes HAVE NO SEASON. The reason snakes hang out in cemeteries is that they are 1) quiet (so make lots of noise). 2) They have large stones which hold heat (try not to get too close to large flat tombstones) 3) They are usually near woods which are full of food (be especially careful in wooded cemeteries. Even in winter, on warm days, snakes will come out to warm themselves. While they are more prevalent in the spring and fall when the days are cool and animals are breeding (think food), they can be seen in the south year round. Just because you don't see him, doesn't mean he doesn't see you by the way. Take care when you see one and avoid it as much as possible. EXCEPT: If you can, take lots of pictures from afar. We once saw one that was almost 11 feet long. I didn't take pictures and now I totally regret it. 8. Take snacks. You probably won't be passing many restaurants along the way. But drink as little as possible. (ditto bathrooms. <G>) 9. Take a partner if at all possible. Often when we get hurt, we are unable to call for help. Know where you are. 911 can not find you based on the call from a cell phone. Better yet, get the local numbers for police and rescue before you leave to go out for the day. Carry a good map, so you can give them good directions to where you are. But most importantly before you get out of the car, both partners should know where you are. 10. Have a business card printed up with your contact information now before you leave. They are cheap and give you something to leave with you when you go to that house to announce your arrival. The lady at the door is most likely married to a distant cousin. They will know someone who is into family history. Leave two. One for them to know you are legit and one to pass onto that someone who is into family history. You won't regret the cost. 11. And finally, once you get home, POST THE PICTURES ONLINE. Save the rest of your cousins from having to traipse through a snake filled cemetery. <G> Be sure and take a good bath when you get back to the hotel. Have your partner check your hair for ticks. You are planning on coming at a time we here in the south call Summer. It will be very hot and muggy. Take a change of clothes with you so you can change while you are out. Take lots of water, and stay hydrated. Make sure you have your contact information on both you and the car incase you get lost or hurt. You probably won't need it as we in the south love our "company", but if you do, you will be glad you took the time. Have a good anti-itch cream in your suitcase in case you get a tick or chigger bite. Don't scratch, it just makes it worse (that was me channeling my grandmother. LOL) P. S. The beautiful white weed on the sides of our highways, is known officially as "Queen Anne's Lace." We call it chigger weed. If you decide to pick it, be prepared to be itchy. <G> Teresa Ghee Elliott All links start with http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rutherfordcemetery and then add Rutherford Co., TN cemeteries: see above TMG sentence structures: /TMG.html Descendants of James Edde of Bedford County, TN /EDDE/index.htm -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, June 23, 2005 10:41 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VACAROLI] Re:Locust Grove, 1 mi. Carter - if you don't mind - what do you have on Plain Dealing(s)? the home of John Wyatt? I know it was on the N. Anna River near the Louisa County line. Once snake season is over we plan go drive down there and look around - most of the area is still very rural, particularly along the river... surprising... but that was what I was told! Well, if they "should", they aren't alone. My missing link (and all his children) don't show up in1860 either. He enlisted in Davidson County, TN, and I plan on looking for him there when school starts. But Ancestry, and the TN census index books do not mention him. I have tried every spelling of the name known to man. Even read the entire county he should have been in myself on more than on occasion. Even the kids are missing that year. Happy Tuesday Evening Listers... A favor to ask please --- that listers delete previous posts before clicking "reply all." Such a move allows us all to read and engage actively in the posts --- without trying to re-read several messages that have already been posted...along with listserv ads that garble up the page. Specific subject headers are also way more fun -- it allows everyone to know where the conversation is headed. Best regards Traci Wilson-Kleekamp
Sorry I do not have a suggestion - never ran into that specific problem but I do have a problem with the oldest census not naming the members of the family - jut putting how many of each sex in each age category - that is of little help at all! By the Civil War my folks were in Ga and S.C. having left Virginia not long after the Revolution - guess they waited so they could travel safely, although they seemed to always travel in groups with plenty of adult men and rifles - guess the Indians were a problem too. If I think of anything or run across something similar, I will let you know. About the index, it is only as good as the folks that did it. Sometimes people got missed. Sometimes the names were hard to make out or they could not read them. In some cases in the 1860 I have seen names misspelled by the census taker and even people with different names........................Say for instance If someone was named John William Adams....................one year he may show up as John and another as William and with both common names to begin with this makes for a huge mess. However if you have searched the census page by page already, then unless you miss him........................he is just not there. You may in fact end up using this Military data to prove he was alive and well and have to skip the year 1860 altogether...................... Also try other sources to prove information about him. Try Tax lists and Wills and thing such as this. Even the old Ct. Minutes come in handy at times. Let's face it..................for what ever reason some of our People seemed to be hiding out when the census taker came to call. If all else fails I would try the surrounding Counties as well. He could have been living at the time, just over the line and ended up being counted in someone elses household in a surrounding County. Did in his military records it say what County he hailed from by any chance? I know that some records give a lot of detail and some of the Military records for the Civil War give very little at all. Who were they realted to by this point in time, try searching under that surname to bring up relatives then see if they were hidding out in their homes. Always note Using ancestry is good, but mistakes are made. That is why we always need to check the org. when possible. In your case you may have to use the Org. in order to locate them at all. Do you have them in 1850 and 1870? If so you may end up again as I said before just having to skip that one census for them and go on. I too have had to do this a few times. Good luck to you with this. You do have a hard one to solve here. Thanks Lorris How sweet of you. I just posted to her off list "Julia" that is about the where they may have been during the 1860 census. Hope it helps her out some. It worked for me. If Diane does not have a suggestion, I happen to have one perhaps. It could be they are not showing up if using an index of only Heads of Household as they may have been living for a time with another family in a place where they wanted to enlist at. My Andrew Jackson on one of the US Censuses if found under this manner.................................. His Mother and siblings left and went to Fulton Co., GA he is still back in Cherokee Ct. AL with a neighbor family awaiting to enlist into the 19th AL. Inf. out of Centre............... Just a thought! Depends on the software you use, but many modern software programs allow you to put your data online fairly easily. Since I use TMG, I use a program called Second Site to create mine. You can view it at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rutherfordcemetery/EDDE/index.htm You can also use Second Site to create a data CD to share with your family. All they have to do is load it, and walk up and down the hyperlinks. Second Site works with TMG datasets only, but if you are interested you can read more http://www.johncardinal.com/ss/ I am not affiliated with John in anyway other than we correspond online about the use of TMG and SS (as it is more commonly known). I don't benefit from the sale of SS in any fashion. Having said that, I am sure that other programs also allow you to put your information online, and you can find websites that require a password to view the information, so you can restrict that information to people you want to see it. Also, I only include people who are dead and who were born before 1925. That way I don't accidentally get any information about living people on my site. So even though my father is deceased, he is not listed on the website. Hope this helps in some small way. I do agree that adding in the scans makes the narrative more readable to the average reader, and so does transcriptions. Of course, it is time consuming, but so is collecting the same information over and over and over again. <G> Teresa Ghee Elliott All links start with http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rutherfordcemetery and then add Rutherford Co., TN cemeteries: see above TMG sentence structures: /TMG.html Descendants of James Edde of Bedford County, TN /EDDE/index.htm -----Original Message----- From: Diane S [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2005 3:12 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VACAROLI] Re: VACAROLI-D Digest V05 #89 Well eventually I plan to put all the information I have gathered into softcover book form for my family - not for the public in general - not for profit but just to make sure all the minute details are known!
