In particular, I inquired about Thilman, Ursula, Lindsay, Andrew, Mary J., Martha, Sarah, Lydia, Thomas, Virginia, and John. Thilman Chandler is in the 1830 census, but not in any earlier or later census. Most of the others show up in the 1850 and 1870 cesus of Caroline county. For some reason they were in Hanover County for the 1860 census. Thanks JEB

I only have him with a son John White Sr. but I agree that Daniel is likely another son. Below is a link to my RootsWeb World Connect database page for Henry White, who I have speculated is a son of Thomas White Sr. of Caroline Co.: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kmcmahan&id=I15262 I believe my wife descends from another son of Thomas White Sr., William White, through William's son Ambrose White. I've been working this line with major help from two other White descendants. Please let me know what you think, as it would be great to have the help of another Caroline Co. White researcher. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: White Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IBC.2ACI/2487 Message Board Post: I am trying to obtain information regarding a Capt. Daniel White 1740-1817. He died in Albemarle Co. Va., living most of his life near Batesville, Virginia. His rank was obtained in the Albemarle Militia during the Revolutionary War. His oldest child, Mary Ann White (wife of Thomas Martin of Albemarle Co.) is listed as being born in Caroline Co. Va. in 1775 (Va. Library). Daniel married Elizabeth McGehee in 1775, in Louisa Co. Va. (Louisa County Marriages and D.A.R) Caroline court order books, found in the Fairfax Co. Va. library, list an indentured deed from Henry White to Daniel White, 1772. The court order books also list the recordation of the last will and testament of Henry White, 1774 (dec.), executors, Francis White and John White, Caroline Co. Va. Further, is an indentured deed from Daniel White to Benjamin Wi...(torn page), 1777-8. I am assuming the torn name is Winn, since Francis White transfered land to a Benjamin Winn around the same time. Capt. Daniel ! White's sons were, Henry White, John White and Benjamin White; he also had additional daughters, Elizabeth, Margaret, Rhoda and Felicia. What this all leads to, is my guess that Daniel White may be a son of the afore mentioned Henry White. If true, then I can take my families genealogy back one more generation. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you, Stephen Dell'Aria

I am searching the Burden line for my husband. Would appreciate the opportunity to share info. I have found a Caroline County, VA, order book entry(page 107) for the Court held June, 1778, in which James Burden is petitioning the court for support for himself and his family, as he is infirm and incapable of supporting himself, by reason of his three sons going into the service of the U.S. He was granted 15lb. At a court held July 1779, 20 lb. was alloted for Sarah Burden, whose son died in the service of the U.S. I assume this is the wife/widow of the above James. I hope this is of interest to you, and hopefully you can add to my knowledge of this family.

    3. Tiffany - Snakes can be active until the first freeze although most are holed up for the winter by mid November. We can still have shirt sleeve weather through November here - and I am not even going to consider looking for my ancestor's property until January! The only poisonous snake we have locally is the copperhead - although there are diamondback rattlers in the mountains - my motto: only a dead snake is a good snake! 3. This is true, women and children did not count at all. Even when it came to eating in the South. The women cooked all day, then served the men first then the children and if they left anything over the women got to eat and then clean up all the mess to boot! No wonder we learned to over eat as a Nation! The women in an all out effort to make sure they did not end up going hungry cooked in huge washtub size pots!! 1. Snakes -- and the Old Cedar Hill Burying Ground across the line in Hanover
    2. Alan Weakley
    3. Caroline genealogists and snake-fearers -- There is no need to be paranoid about snakes. Nearly all species in Virginia and the South in general are harmless (in fact, beneficial). None will bother you unless you bother them, advertently or inadvertently. The inadvertent part is where the advice of several earlier posters comes in -- avoid stepping on them or right next to them, and you are completely safe -- they will not come after you, knowing a bad bet when they see one. After all, if a 1000 foot tall creature came walking through your neighborhood would you try to bite it, or would you scamper out of the way? ;-) So, watch where you are walking and you'll be fine. if you are in thick weeds where you cannot see your feet, wear heavy boots that go partway up your calves. As for ticks and chiggers, that is a harder story. Chiggers are small mites (essentially invisible) that try to to suck your blood (like ticks) but human immune systems react strongly to them -- which means that the chigger is quickly killed (smothered and then assimilated). The only problem is that it leaves an itchy spot (much like a mosquito bite, although some people have stronger reactions to chiggers than to mosquitos) -- so it's a bad deal for the person and for the chigger. Ticks can carry various diseases -- in order to transmit them they have to be attached for nearly a day. Take precautions like tucking your pants legs in your socks, using an insect repellant that works against ticks and chiggers is a good idea (DEET does not) -- though some people fear that the repellants are more harmful than the ticks. Take a shower as soon as practical after being out in the woods or grassy fields, and check (ideally with the help of a friend) those hard to see places (armpits, head hair, etc.). Statistically, you are much MUCH more likely to be harmed every day you drive a car (such as driving to that cemetery in Caroline, especially along I-95) than by snakes, ticks, chiggers, or any other wild creature! -- a southern field biologist with ancestors from Caroline, Louisa, and Hanover (Beadles, White, Harris, Lipscomb, Jones, Goodwin, Doswell, West, ...). P.S. Anyone descended from the Harrises and Overtons (such as William Harris and Temperance Overton) should consider visiting the old graveyard (variously referred to as Old Cedar Hill Burying Ground, The Cedars, the Harris graveyard, Cedar Hill) on the property of Kings Dominion Amusement Park. Temperance herself (died 1716) is buried there. The graveyard is within distant sound and sight of the roller-coasters, and right next to a water-tower, but still manages to be a quiet and remarkable place, with giant cedars (and a 5 foot diameter tulip tree) which must have been there when Temperance and others were buried there nearly 300 years ago.

    1. Re: [VACAROLI] Snakes in Va.
    2. I would like to say Thank You to everyone that has given me tips on snakes. I am not from the south but wish I was. I have been to Kentucky 3 times in the last 6 years for research and last November cleaned up a cemetery that was overgrown. I am nervous now as I guess I will be entering Snake Season. I am going to check with the Heritage Center in Fredericksburg and see if there are local guides for hire. It might not be a bad thing to have a local around. I am trying to gather as much information from old maps and deeds so I can get permission ahead of time. It is so amazing how much you can learn from maps and deeds. I did get a tick once on my first visit to Kentucky. I did not know I had it until I felt something and pulled it off of behind my ear lobe, it was the size of a pea. I had to ask what it was, as I had never seen one so large. But I do not know what Chiggers are. One tip for cemetery pictures. If you can download your pictures to CD and then leave one with the local library and Genealogy/Historical Society, this helps also. Thank you again. Sincerely Tiffany Luchetta
