Surnames: Jones, Dickensons, Brooks, Newtons, Gatewoods Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IBC.2ACI/2491 Message Board Post: My thanks to Ann for all her hard work. I have been perusing the tax records of Caroline and find I have a little info on Washinton Jones and Fanny Jones. Hope it will help someone. Washington Jones md Fanny Kidd, ca 1793. Wahinton lived ca 1770-1803. His land was by Wm White , by Burke's Bridge. This maybe above Ruther Glen. He was the son of Henry Jones. Was there some kind of epidemic in the 1800-1803 period? So many were dying then. Fanny Jones was the wid of Washington Jones. She was Fanny Kidd the dau of William and Mary Halbert Kidd. Walker Kidd was her brother. The CAroline order bk pg 90 1802 lists these children for Wm: Washington, James, Elizabeth Moseley, Washington Jones and Fanny his wife, Edmund, Joel, John, and Wm. Thos and Philip Kidd were admin. He had "Bins". and 21 slaves (Wm Kidd that is) Wallker and Polley were infants. Does anyone know about the districts, did they run north and south or east and west? I would guess dist. 2 took in Pt. Royal. Dist. 1 Doguetown? Anyone have ideas on this? Jean

Thank you for this generous offer to share information. Could you tell me what, if any information, is available on the William and Elizabeth (Gravatte) Timberlake line? Thank you, Debian Marty
First, my thanks for all the helps and my apology for whatever confusion I have created. I did not focus my questions sufficiently! I am interested at this point only in the years after Judah Levi was put ashore in Leedstown (now in Westmoreland County, Virginia) on January 27, 1772. At that time he was just about 12 years of age. We've been to Leedstown and have contemplated what it must have been like to be so far from home and pretty much alone. He did have his brother Elias, his uncle Henry on that voyage. Also being disembarked was a Rice Levi, about whom I have no information. Judah enlisted as a soldier about 1777. I have two questions: one general and one specific. The general question first: can anyone describe the normal process for a bonded arrival? Were they sold? Were they assigned homes in which to live and work? What was the period of service? The more specific question is simply: Is there any evidence of Judah Levi in this five year period? I am sending this to the Rootsweb sites for the counties between Leedstown and Fauquier County. Again, my regrets that I stated my question so poorly! Richard Batman Williamsburg, Virginia
Sorry! Seek any ideas about where a 12 years old Jew, Judah Levi, from London (along with a brother and an uncle) might have gone after being put off the ship Justitia at Leedstown on the Rappahannock River in what is now Westmoreland County in January 1772. In the Revolution he fought with Abraham Buford troops. In 1783, he married Mary Mcgraw in Fauquier County. He stayed in Fauquier County, until about 1800, having a number children. Abiut that time he moved to Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky, where he died in 1829. My question is about where and what type on service did he render between 1772 and his service in the Revolution? Thanks in advance!

Hi Anna, Thanks so much for this transcription. It gives me my 1st explicit connection between William White and Ambrose White (b. c1753 d. 1823), my wife's ancestor, other than both were surveyors in Caroline Co. I had speculated that William was the father of Ambrose, who also had a son William (b. c1775, also d. 1823) I would have guessed that "Dr" means the person transferring the land and "To" means the person receiving the land. Your definitions are a bit counter intuitive. It looks like these alterations to land taxes are based on transfers that could have occurred any time after 1782 and by 1812, based on the title of the microfilm. Or do you think the alterations were all made in 1783? Kent
From the microfilm - Caroline Land Tax 1782 - 1812 (reel 62) This was one large sheet of paper - written on both sides, 3 hand drawn columns on each side sectioned to arrange alphabetically. A piece about 3 x 5 looks as if it has been cut out or torn away. In this list the old accounting terms were used thus "Dr" means the person receiving the land and "To" means the person transferring the land. Categories: Proprietors Names - quantity of acres - price per acre - Amount Paid - Amt of the tax The person who microfilmed this labeled it as "1782 Alterations", however this begins the list: "State of Alterations of Land Taken place in Caroline County since the Return of the Commissioners of Land Tax, in year 1783" Dr Garland Anderson To John Jones = 100 - 6/7 - 30.8.4 - 9.2 Dr Wm Ale To Jno Burruss = 70 - 5/1 - 17.15.10 - 5/5 Dr John Broaddus To land not before charged = 50 - 6/ - 15.0.0 - 4.6 Dr Reuben Broaddus To Phill Vaughn = 100 - 2/7 - 12.18.4 - 3.11 Dr Charles Brown To Anthony Sale = 173 - 5/3 - 44.13.10 - 13.6 Dr Robert G.
