    3. Eldred, Unfortunaely, I do not know who the parents of John GAYLE born circa 1749 were. I only have two children for John GAYLE & Joanna WALDEN but I know they had more. I have John born ca. 1778 & my ancestor William born ca. 1770. I would appreciate any info you have on other children for them. William GAYLE born ca. 1770 married on 10 Nov 1797 to Lucy DILLARD born ca. 1770. I have one child, my ancestor, John M. GAYLE born ca. 1795. John M. GAYLE married on 20 Dec 1823 to Catherine Carolyn SEARLS born bet. 1804-1810. I have three children for them my ancestor Lewis Minor GAYLE b. ca. 1827 in Caroline, VA, George W. GAYLE born ca. 1828, & Angelina J. GAYLE b. abt. 1831 in Caroline, VA. Lewis Minor GAYLE married on 03 Nov 1847 to Frances A. BEAZLEY b. ca. 1822 in Caroline, VA. I have ten children for them: William E. ca. 1846, my ancestor Mary Lewis GAYLE b. Mary Lewis GAYLE was my grt. grt. grandmother born Dec 1848 in Caroline, VA. She married on 20 Dec 1869 in Hanover, VA to Robert Lewis ATKINSON b. ca. 1842 in Hanover. Mary & Robert had nine children. Mary became a widow in 1883. About 1888 Mary married for a second time to William E. TYREE. Mary died abt. 1918 in Henrico County, VA at the age of 70. I descend through Mary's son Oscar Bruce ATKINSON born 25 Oct 1873 in Hanover, VA. This is the earliest census I could find for our ancestor: 1810 Caroline, VA Roll: 67; Page: 34; Image: 37.00. John GAYLE 1 Male Under 10 1 Male 16 through 25 1 Male 45 and Over 3 Females Under 10 2 Females 10 through 15 1 Female 26 through 44 All other Free persons 15 The earliest record I am able to find regarding GAYLE'S in Caroline County is the 1799 PersonalB Tax Lists which list a John and a William GAYLE. William I assume would be John's brother or father. 3. Bernie, Thanks for the information. I was aware of the Chenault 'Red Book', but have not seen it yet. My link to the Chinault/Chenault's is through my GGGGrandmother, Lucy Chinault, b abt 1800 and d. bet. 1860-1870. She married Lewis Haynes. I think she maybe a daughter of Stephen Chinault and Mary, and she may be the sister of Brooking Chinault, but I can not prove this yet, it is just an assumption I am making based on were they lived. I can not link the Campbell's you mentioned to the ones in my line. I am linked to the Campbell's through Harriet Campbell who married Thomas Broaddus. Harriet was a daughter of Joseph Campbell. She was first married to a Thomas Sale. 1. Re: [VACAROLI] 1840 Caroline Land Tax Records
    2. Hi Kathy: i noticed in your message that you are researching the Broaddus, Campbell and Chenault Families of Caroline Co., VA. You may or may not be aware of the following but I will relate this information to you in hopes that it will help you. 1. In the early 1960s the County Clerk for Caroline Co., VA. was Thomas Elliott Campbell. He has written a book titled something like "History of Caroline County, VA". Thomas is the son of Mannasseh Campbell and Emily Allen. 2. The current Clerk of Caroline County, VA is Ray S. Campbell. I do not know the relationship between him and the former County Clerk, Thomas Campbell. Ithink that he is either the son or grandson because they both descend from the same Thomas Bell of Caroline Co., VA. 3. My great great grandfather was orphaned in Caroline Co. VA in 1815 and he chose as his guardians, Thomas Bell and Mordecai Broaddus. It seems that Mordecai Broaddus who was a minister and ran an orphanage in Caroline Co., VA. He was closely associated with and lived just across the street from Thomas Bell. 4. The Bells and the Campbells intermarried as well as the Bells and the Broaddus. 5. My beloved wife is the grandaughter of Maggie Eugenia Chenault from Caroline Co., VA. In my research of her ancestry I found that most all of the Chenault family descended from Estienne du Chenau born in France about 1675. He was a French Huguenot (Protestants) who married Mary Elizabeth howlett about 1700. He immigrated to America and landed in Yorktown, VA on March 5, 1701.This family is well documented in a book titled: "Descendants of Estienne Chenau" by Carlton Bl Rogers, Jr. By the Chenault Association it is called the Red Book and a new one is currently being wirtten and should be published sometime this year. Your might want to check out the web-site called Chenault Association. Go to Google and print in Chenault Family Association. Hope that this is of some help to you in your research. 3. We have corresponded before, years ago. I can't remember just what the connections were but if I remember we had lines that intersected. Va & Ky? My name is Anne Baker & live in Lexington, Ky. *_Hint: _*/make a copy of this list before you start sorting for it won't go back to its original form (Humpty Dumpty). By sorting the distance from court house catagory - you can find all the neighbors/ My lines are Redd, Thomas, Minor, Barbee, Farguson, Connor, Durrett, Marshall, Woolfolk, Jones & the list goes on & on (all Virginia burned county folks :-( ) I have 1/2 finished the 1819 Land tax list & more to come. 2. Anne, Down through the years, I think I have researched just about everyone in Caroline CO. I descended from John Walden and John Gayle, both of whom married twice and had at least 12 children each. I am a distant relative of Kim Campbell of Bowling Green who has the same ancestors. The Walden men were migrating early so very few of them are found in Caroline CO; however, most of the females remained, married into many families there. I have a feeling that I could find some of my connections among the Greens, Gatewoods, Bowcocks, Harrises, Dillards, Spindles etc. who might be found there in 1840. I belong to Ancestry and can, by searching name by name, put some of these families together; however, it is always helpful to know who lived in particular district, who the neighbors were, and that information is missing when one looks only for one name. I am not sure how you transmit this information but I believe it would be of help to me. I certainly do admire your tenacity in doing this project and then offering it to those who feel they can use it. If you have the time, could you either transmit the file or tell me how I can obtain it? Eldred W. Melton ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

(I am very new at this). Even though I still cannot connect John Buckner to John Buckner Wright, Your information merged well with the notes my mother assembled back in the 1980s. When John Buckner Wright married his wife, Sarah Elizabeth, she was already a Wright, so no name change was necessary for her. Instead of a Brooks like her mother's maiden name, I'd want to call her Sarah Elizabeth (Wright) Wright. My mother listed the children of John Buckner Wright (my G-G-Grandad) by their familiar names. She only knew of 5 in her lifetime: (1) Fannie Sue or Susie (married Valvin Loving) (2) Carrie Belle (married Upper Zion Postmaster Frank Houston) (3) Annie Lee (married Ruffin Henderson, had Webb and Gladys) (4) John Wright (married Dell Penney, then Frankie Gray (?)) (5) Eddie Baughnum Wright (married Rockie Parr - no children) One little mystery remains. When JBW married the widow Nancy, what was the last name of her children? By 1910 JBW was 72 with two young teenage girls on his hands, Alice and Nannie. I'm just wondering if these could be Alice and Nellie Ward that my great-grandfather, a Carter in Bowling Green, took into his home. By the way, are you using an available list of people in Greenlawn Cemetery? If you would care to send me an email I will be glad to reply with an invitation to visit my family tree on ancestry.com (Same goes for any family members out there!)
