    1. [VACAMPBE-L] Marion Lewis Collins
    2. No relation to me, just thought some of you may be interested. Sunday, December 29, 2002 The News & Advance, Lynchburg, VA Marion Lewis Collins Marion Lewis Collins, 94, of Lynchburg passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in Drinkard Health Center. Born Aug. 29, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Colonel Langhorne Dabney and Helen Armistead Lewis. She was the wife of the late Edson Wheatly Collins. Mrs. Collins was born in Lynchburg but later resided in Norwich, N.Y. She retired to Lynchburg and later resided at Westminister-Canterbury. She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church and a volunteer at Guggenheimer Nursing Home and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Randall Holt Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists. Mrs. Collins had great pride in her heritage which was reflected in her activities and accomplishments. Her grandmother, Elizabeth Dabney Langhorne Lewis, was, for almost 60 years, an officer of the Southern Memorial Association and led that organization in its important early efforts to preserve the Confederate Section of the Old City Cemetery. Although Mrs. Collins lived much of her early married life out of the area, she was a generous supporter of the continuing work of that organization in her later years. She enjoyed an occasional drive through the cemetery ground to visit the place that was so important to her grandmother. Genealogical research was an interesting hobby and resulted in Mrs. Collins being a co-compiler along with Lucy Harrison Miller Baber, and Louise Ann Blunt, of the book, "Marriage and Deaths of Lynchburg, Virginia Newspapers," 1794-1836. Its publication in 1980 was a project of the Randall Holt Chapter, National Society of Daughters of American Colonists, and today serves as a vital and invaluable resource for genealogist. Mrs. Collins is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was appreciative of all her caregivers and companion, Arden Callen. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Lewis Terry, Langhorne Lewis Kellam, and one brother Harry T. Lewis. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Spring Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Frank G. Dunn. Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels Inc., 605 Clay Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504 or Old City Cemetery, 401 Taylor Street, Lynchburg, VA 24501. Diuguid Wiggington Chapel is in charge of arrangements, 385-8900.
