I've found info online for this family dating back to James F. Holt, Sr. around the turn of the 19th century. I think that they were involved with Bethel Baptist Church in Charlotte County, and Beulah Baptist Church in Campbell County near Brookneal. As for R. J. Holt himself. The history of the 56th Virginia Infantry Regiment shows an R. J. Holt in Company I, being discharged sometime in 1861. My great-grandmother was Grace Eliza Holt from Charlotte County, and I suspect that she was the daughter of Burwell Nicholas Holt, who was in turn the son of James F. Holt, Jr. I've tried to make contact with other Holt descendents, but no luck so far. Let me know if you make any headway.
