Can't fine Edward C. Alexander on your webside. Don't mention Battle of Yellow Tavern that took place the day before (May 11, 1864). Was interested in Gen George Armstrong Custer--he was in Hardin Co, Ky, a command post at Brown- Pusey House, later was killed at the Little Big Horn (an ancestor of mine, from Hardin Co, was with him). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sarah" <sarahreveley@grandecom.net> To: <vacampbe@rootsweb.com> Cc: <mkscv55@webtv.net> Sent: Sunday, June 03, 2007 10:59 PM Subject: Re: [VACAMPBE] Confederate Soldier >>> We are looking for information about Edward Clarenon Alexander, >>> Confederate Soldier who died/killed in action on May 12-16, 1864. Here is where he was May 12-16 Contact the SCV chapter in Lynchburg! Spotsylvania Court House Salient or Bloody Angle (May 12-13); Piney Branch Church (May 15); Harrison House (May 18) Location: Spotsylvania County Campaign: Grant's Overland Campaign (May-June 1864) Date(s): May 8-21, 1864 Principal Commanders: Lt. This two-week battle was a series of combats along the Spotsylvania front. The Union attack against the Bloody Angle at dawn, May 12-13, captured nearly a division of Lee's army and came near to cutting the Confederate army in half. Confederate counterattacks plugged the gap, and fighting continued unabated for nearly 20 hours in what may well have been the most ferociously sustained combat of the Civil War. On May 19, a Confederate attempt to turn the Union right flank at Harris Farm was beaten back with severe casualties. Union generals Sedgwick (VI Corps commander) and Rice were killed. Confederate generals Johnson and Steuart were captured, Daniel and Perrin mortally wounded. On May 21, Grant disengaged and continued his advance on Richmond. >> We are looking for information about Edward Clarenon Alexander, >> Confederate Soldier who died/killed in action on May 12-16, 1864. Does anyone have any information about Joshua W. Kelly/Kelley and his family? I am researching the Family Cemetery located in Gladys, in the community known as Hell Bend. I grew up there and everyone always referred to that piece of property as the "Old Kelly Place" or the "Kelly Family Cemetery" yet I have come to discover he and his second wife (Elizabeth C. Johnson) and several of his children are not buried there. They are buried at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Lynch Station. His obit states he was buried in the "family burying ground" but there is a marker with his name and dates located at the church cemetery on Rt. 626. Below is a copy of his obituary. Joshua W. Kelley, 74 years of age died Friday at his home at north Altavista. He was the youngest of six children of James Kelly and Mrs. Nancy Kelley of Pittsylvania having been born November 13, 1853. Mr. Kelley is survived by his widow Mrs. Elizabeth C. Kelley and the following sons and daughters: R M Kelley of Suffolk; S W Kelley of Lynchburg; W J and M C Kelley of Altavista; J T Kelley of Savannah, GA, Mrs. Ida Arthur of Altavista, Mrs Monroe Clay of Level Run; Mrs. Luther Bell of Roanoke; Mrs. J H Arthur of Washington; Misses Elsie and Janney Kelley of Altavista and Wesley Kelley of Altavista. There are 54 grandchildren and four great grandchildren in the family. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the family buring ground by Rev. Mr. Stanley of Dry Folk. Internment took place at the family burying ground. Pallbearers were Monroe Clay, Willard West, J B Burks, J T Hall, Willie Bell and G W Thurman. Granddaughters of Mr. Kelley were flower bearers. Mr. Kelley was a member of the Baptist Church. The Lynchburg News, Tuesday Morning, June 5, 1928 Thanks! I am descended from Hudson (Hutson) Blankinship>Archibald Blankinship>Rowland Blankinship. Realize there were a number of marriages between Trents and Blankinships in Campbell County. The records appear to confirm several things hinted at in other records: 1) Archibald Blankinship had 120 acres in his own right before his father Hudson died (although he may have bought this from his father's 400 acres.} 2) Archibald appears to have bought his mother Edith's dower land (about 90-100 acres) from the other heirs after she died in the mid 1830s. 3)However, it may be that he sold/gave this land to his son Rowland. In the 1850 census, Archibald has land worth $1,200 and Rowland land worth $900, which would appear to match the above at a value of $10 an acre. Several other names are of interest to me, including Andrew Fields, Jesse Burton, William Organ, Letitia Herndon. Thanks again and let me know if I can provide you with any additional information. Just a shot in the dark. There was a Henry Gaines, s/o Richard Gaines (b 1752 Albemarle Co VA) and Ann Garth. That Henry (b. abt 1782) married Elizabeth Kirby in 1802 in Albemarle Co VA. I don't have their children, but you might want to ask about the children of that Henry Gaines, often called Harry, given the middle initial of G, perhaps for Garth. I know that Henry (m. Ann Garth) had a daughter with the middle name of Garth. This is not my family, directly. I have some knowledge of them only due to Richard's father, Heirom/Hiram Gaines m Margaret French Taliaferro. That couple had children named Richard, Humphrey, Francis, Hiram, William S, Ann Pittman, Henry and Martha. The parents ended up in GA, but many of the children remained in VA. I come from Margaret F Taliaferro's father and his first wife. But part of Albemarle seems to have fallen into Bedford at one point, though Bedford was created mostly from Lunenburg, In 1752, when the county was created, I had ancestors living in what (in 1782) became Campbell Co, but in 1751 had been Albemarle, and in 1752, became (or they moved 100') Bedford Co VA. One, in particular, was Charles Lynch who grandson went on to found what is present day Lynchburg. Charles owned & settled land in what became Bedford in 1752 and Campbell in 1782, but his will was filed in Albemarle, probably due to the lack of a courthouse in a newly created county or his land in Bedford was closer to the courthouse in Charlottesville, Albemarle Co. Thus, there's the outside possibility, that Henry Gaines, s/o Richard of Albemarle, had a son, Henry G, who's land fell into Campbell, though a series of minor county revisions or minor moves by the son or grandson. Just a thought. I have no other info on this Henry m Elizabeth Kirby, nor any children listed for him. But, figured it might give you somewhere to look. I was just in Alta Vista last week and a very nice lady at the Chamber of Commerce told me about a Childress cemetery in Evington. I did not have a chance to go. I will do that next time I go through Virginia. I did not find any records in Alta Vista or Rustburg.
