Just yesterday our senior center was donated several boxes of goods. Among these goods were a small stack of local newspapers dated mostly in the 1930's but among the papers was two laminated bits of newspaper. Mainly just scraps...3 of them BUT some of the content of these scraps is well worth reading. They are pieces of Civil War era newspapers from the Richmond Dispatch b Cowardin and Hammersley. I have no date or year of publication but one article is dated August 15, 1861 so I will presume that this is the year of publication. It speaks of Bull Run; Manassas, Leesburg and Harpers's Ferry as if it were fairly recent...so my assumption may be all wrong. OBITUARY Died, at Camp Winder Hospital, June 13th, from typhoid fever and hemorrage, Lieut. N.W. SMITH, Company A, 19th Mississippi Volunteers, in the 24th year of his age. Lieut. Smith was one of three sons who gallantly volunteered to serve their country at the beginning of this ardous and trying struggle. Deceased had seen much service , being present and a participator in Bull Run, Manassas, Harper's Ferry, Leesburg; and while subject to many hardships and extreme exposure at the Yorktown lines, nobly vore up against fell disease there engendered during the discharge of active military duty Lieut. Smith was much esteemed for many good qualities, and was a young officer of much promise. He expired calmly and sweetly in his mother's arms, the good old lady having arrived at his bedside some few hours before his death. Obituary Died, in Richmond, Virginia, on the 4th of June, aged 33 years, Lucy Elizabeth, wife of Dr. S. Haversham, of South Carolina, and youngest daughter of the late Major Richard and Pauline C. Pollard, of Albemarle county, Virginiua. The deceased was the victim of a fearful and relentless disease--consumption. For nearly fifteen years she had suffered the slow ravages of this disease; and yet in the midst of the pain, travail, and weariness of this long period, and the chilling prespects of approaching death, defered from year to year, contrary to the expectations of her physicians, she was untiring in the active service and practical charities of her religion, and in the fulfillment of every earthly duty as a devoted wife, a stay and comfort to her aged parents, a fond mother, and an affectionate sister. The duties of domestic life were discharged by her with rare fidelity and every claim of natural affection was presonded to with a warmth and depth of love as tender as it was faithful. The natural virtues of her character, the humility of her religion, and the sweet graces of her manner and conversation raised up for her friends whereever she went and among her last words were the testimonies of gratitude to those dear ones who _____and her immediate family ________ (the remainder is missing.) I had a little bit of time today so I went to the Library of Virginia and did a little searching. Here is what I found: Marriage bond: Signed by Richard Hammersley and James Hamlet for a marriage to take place between Richard Hammersley and Lucy Hamlet....signed 11, May 1807. Richard died before Lucy did. I could not find a will for either. Richard died sometime before March 30, 1833. An appraisal of the estate was done on that date (Campbell Co. Will Bk 7 p. 168). On June 9, 1834 an accounting of the debts due for the Estate were filed (Campbell Co. Will Bk 7, p. 282-283). One of the bonds on the property were held by Lucy Hammersley and James Hamlet. A survey of the property is attached to the document. The land was adjacent to the Little Falling River. Of interest to me is that the surveyor of the land was one of my great-grand uncles, Paulette Clark. Lucy's estate was appraised on June 30, 1835 (Campbell Will book 7, p. 327). There is an accounting of the estate too but I ran out of time on the machine and there was a line waiting. I will have to save that for next time. The Accounting appears in Campbell Co. Will Bk 8, p. 100. I also found in the index an Elizabeth Hamlett who left a will in Campbell Co. Will Bk 7, p. 138, Inventory in same book on p. 171. I didn't get a chance to look that one up either. Other things I just ran across in the Charlotte Co. Marriage Register: James Hamlet to Nancy P. White...April 21, 1808 (Richard Dabbs minister) Jesse Hamlett to Elizabeth Ramsey...June 13, 1826 William Hamlett to Catherine Collins....June 16, 1784 (Thomas Johnston) George Hamlett to Lucy Mitchell....Sept. 8, 1808 (Richard Dabbs) Campbell Co. Marriage Bonds: David Hammersley to Susan Williams dau. of John Williams. Bond signed by David and a Booker Smith. Witnesses were James B. Hammersley and Booker Smith ...February 18, 1843 James Hammersley to Nancy Faris signed by J.P. Hammersley and John Faris on January 8, 1816. James Hammersley to Sarah Holt signed by James P. Hammersley and Caleb Holt on Sept. 13, 1830. Morris Hammersley to Ann Lewellyn on June 10, 1844 signed by M. H. Hammersley and Washington(?) Hunter
