    1. [VACAMPBE-L] Baileys in Campbell County
    2. Marilyn J. Jackson
    3. Hello, Both of these men are ancestors of my husband's. I know almost nothing about William. He does not leave a will in Campbell Co. His daughter Temperance marries Thomas Bailey in 1794 in Campbell. He has two other daughters- Susannah m Thomas Sheppard and Sarah m Adam Driskill. As far as I can determine they are not brothers. Thomas comes from a family out of Henrico. That family has been researched and is written up in Vol 2 of Cockes and Cousins. There is some question as to Thomas's exact parentage as the author originally had him confused with a man of the same name who marries a Timberlake. That Thomas, who is a Quaker, is born in Pennsylvanina and goes on to Ohio. Thomas Bailey leaves a will in Campbell. He has 4 children by his first wife, Mildred Clark of Prince Edward County. He has four children- Sarah who marries Wm Penick in Prince Edward and moves to KY, Agnes who marries Wm Wilson in Campbell (don't have other info) and Thomas and John M who end up in Charlotte County. By Temperance he has Elizabeth m Asa Palmer, Robert m Lucy Buster (moved to MO), Nancy m John W Mason, Temperance m Creed Foster, John "Yancey" m Mary Cobbs, Mary "Polly" m Henry S Holt, Fanny m Abner W Mason, Jemima m Henry Moon and Lee m Frances Gillespie. My husband has a double descent one line from John M and the second from Nancy. Will be happy to share what I have. Marilyn Jackson

    1. [VACAMPBE-L] James Wilson
    2. Looking for any information about James Wilson who lived in Campbell County in the late 1700s. He served in the Revolutionary War, and was severely wounded. A family story says that he lived on a plantation in Virginia for several years before serving in the war, and leaving for Ohio in late 1800. He had several children, but the only one I know for certain is John Wilson, born 8 July 1796 in Campbell County. I have been told that James appears on the 1790 tax list for Campbell County, and the census for that same year. I wonder if someone who lives in that area and has access to the old records could check to see if a James Wilson is listed in the tax list and the census records. I am physically unable to go check out this info. I will very much appreciate any help, and will reimburse anyone for any and all costs involved with this search. Thank you, Harold McDonald Cantonment, Florida

    1. [VACAMPBE-L] Walton- Martin- Drinkard- McKinney
    2. Wilmer L. Kerns
    3. I want to get in touch with descendants of James C. Walton (or anyone who is researching this family): James Chick Walton James Chick Walton, son of William and Elizabeth White (Chick) Walton, was born Aug. 23, 1819 at Bent Creek, and died on May 10, 1886, in Campbell County, Virginia. He first married Mary Elizabeth White,[1], probable daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Ferguson) White[2] of Bent Creek. She was born in 1823 and died circa 1853. James C. married second, in December 1855, to Virginia Caroline Greenlee, daughter of David Samuel and Hannah Ingram (Grigsby) Greenlee of Rockbridge County, Virginia. She was born July 19, 1836 at Natural Bridge, Virginia, and died July 25, 1880 in Campbell County. James bought a factory in Lynchburg but lost it during the recession of the 1850s.[3] James and his second wife were buried in a family cemetery on the Beasley Farm, Campbell County, near the intersection of HW 501 and HW 660.[4] Children of James C. and Mary Elizabeth (White) Walton were: 1. Sarah E. Walton was born in 1838. 2. Virginia C. Walton was born in 1841 and died in 1903. She married Daniel W. McKinney (1831-1896) on April 12, 1854 by the Rev. John E. Edwards.[5] They had three children, one of whom was Nannie E. McKinney, born on Dec. 1, 1855. 3. John W. Walton was born in 1845. 4. Robert M. Walton was born in 1848. He was living in the household of his father when the 1870 U. S. Census was taken for Campbell County, Virginia. Children of James C. and Virginia C. (Greenlee) Walton were:[6] 5. Emaline “Emma” Louise Walton was born April 19, 1860, and died July 10, 1946. She married Samuel Richardson Martin, March 15, 1883 and lived at Concord, in either Appomattox or Campbell County. The 1910 U. S. Census for Campbell County lists these children: O. Lewis Martin, age 23; John Martin, age 20; 6. Scottie L. Walton (female) was born in 1860. She married a Mr. Drinkard and lived at one time in Pulaski, Virginia. 7. Cornelia Belle Walton was born in 1862. 8. Margaret W. Walton was born in 1864. It is believed that she married William Deacon and their residence was at 2027 Popular Street in Lynchburg. 9. Catherine Jennings Walton was born in 1866. She married and moved to Michigan. 10. Richard Thomas Grigsby Walton was born in 1868. He married and lived at Pulaski, Virginia at one time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] Stuart McDearmon Farrar, Historical Notes of Appomattox County, Virginia, (Privately Published: Pamplin, Virginia), 1989, pp. 128, 205. [2] Andrew White was born Mar. 13, 1789 in Dunse, Berwick County, Scotland and died in 1870 in Appomattox County. He came to Bent Creek, Buckingham County in 1802, where he later married Margaret Ferguson on Dec. 18, 1816. They raised a large family at Bent Creek (now in Appomattox County). Margaret died of childbirth on Jan. 19, 1835 at Bent Creek. [3] The Lynchhurg Virginian, issue of April 7, 1858, contained an auction announcement that would offer to the highest bidder, not only the factory equipment, but a lot of tobacco, six slaves, mules and horses and wagons, but also "Twenty-two factory hand." The auction was held on the steps of the Campbell County Courthouse. [4] Information on the cemetery, and inscriptions, were provided by the late Dr. Joseph Evans of Boulder, Colorado. Even if this family is not yours the book gives you a good first hand account of what it was like in the Confederate Army up until Gettysburg. John L. Holt was killed at Gettysburg and the last letter in the book is written only days before the battle. I was really surprised at how open the letters are about where they are camped, where they were marching to, etc. I am sure in later wars such letters would have been heavily censured. John L. Holt is my 2nd cousin and was closely connected to my Clark family of Charlotte County.
