I am interested in your posts on the Alexander Family. I am just starting my research on my Alexander line. I do not know where my James Alexander was born but I believe he was born sometime between 1793-1823 and died about 1848. He married Jane B. Nash of Charlotte Co., VA, daughter of James Nash and Jean Virginia Pugh on December 8, 1843 in Charlotte County, VA. Jane and her daughter Lovelette Alexander show up in the 1850 Census living in Charlotte Co., VA with Jane's sister and brother-in-law. I have not run across many Alexander's in Charlotte Co. but have been trying to chart the Campbell County ones because I believe that is where I will find a connection. I think I will find my Alexander connections in Campbell, Bedford or Augusta Counties in VA. The only James I have run across so far was the son of a Joseph Alexander and Sarah Reid. I am not sure he is mine. Does any of this ring any bells with the Alexander researchers out there?

The graves were in a shaded area beneath a large tree and it was very late in the day when I visited. My recollection is that several of the grave markers were readily readable from up close, but that several were also no longer readable. I took some photos at the time which I seem to have misplaced. My recollection is that only a couple of the photographs came out reasonably well, but that Robert ALEXANDER's grave marker was readable from one of the better photographs that I developed. I will attempt to locate these and send them along. I am descended from Capt. Robert ALEXANDER (b Nov 1746 - VA, d 20 Nov 1820 - Campbell, VA) and Anne AUSTIN (b 10 Mar 1758, d Abt 1815 - Campbell, VA) through their daughter Catherine Wilson ALEXANDER (b 17 Jan 1796, d 26 Jul 1838). Catherine Wilson ALEXANDER married Nathaiel West PAYNE (b 11 Apr 1790, d 1841 - Lynchburg, Campbell, VA) and their daughter Catherine Withers PAYNE married my lineal ROPER ancestor Benjamin Eliscus ROPER. For more information, see my Post "Benjamin Eliscus Roper (b 8 Nov 1816 - Richmond, Henrico Co., VA; d 11 Apr 1871 - Lynchburg, Harris, TX)" (17 Sep 2002 5:49 PM GMT) at: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=540.1

I hope to look for the site in the near future and I will send you copies of any photos I take. How are you related? Thanks again, Bob: [email protected]

At the time, I was NOT aware that the structure had been destroyed by fire. And seeing both the photograph and tale in the Campbell County Chronicles, I was expecting that the structure would be a celebrated place amongst local historians. To the contrary, Rock Castle had been forgotten! Though I did NOT find Rock Castle, I DID find the Alexander graves in the back yard of a local farm. Unfortunately, the owner of the property was NOT there, so my visit was QUITE abbreviated. I DID succeed in finding a reference to Rock Castle in a news clipping at the Campbell County Library in Rustburg. I Posted the test of that article at "Brookneal Union Star (VA): "Rock Castle Was Built When Indians Were Here" (Friday, January 17, 1947)" (12 Aug 2002 4:16 PM GMT): http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.campbell&m=755 After finding the article, I went back out and looked again. I THINK that the ruins of Rock Castle is probably on the farm immediately oppose the location of the graves. I wandered onto the property and took a look. There was an overgrown area that looked as though it might have been the site. But absent the permission of the owner to go on the property to look and visiting by myself near nightfall, I had to abandon my investigation. I did NOT own my hand held GPS device at the time of my visit so I do NOT have a precise Longitude and Latitude reading. But I believe that the ruins are probably on the South side of what is now called Pigeon East of the Brookneal Highway (U.S. 501) near Gladys. I would encouage you to first do a map reconnaisance and try to identify the owners of the farms to obtain permission. If you get a look at the ruins, I would much apprecaite seeing some photographs of the same!!

I come from Chalres Lynch of Bedford, later Campbell Co. I also come from William Calloway, who married 2. Elizabeth Crawley. Several of the Caloway grandchildren married Tyree's so it's not out of the question that they are all connected. Do you have any idea who Angeline's parents were, or Tyree Crawley's parents might have been?
I am not sure if this is your lady or not but I do have a Lallie Ramsey in my database. I do not know who this woman is married to though. Lallie Elizabeth Ramsey b. about 1872, dau. of Civil War soldier (VA Morris Artillery), William Abner Ramsey (b. March 22, 1832 in Charlotte Co. VA, d. June 28, 1911 in Charlotte Co., VA) married on September 25, 1858 in Charlotte Co., VA, to Dolly Wheeler Berkley (b. April 4, 1840 Charlotte Co., VA; d. June 2, 1924 in Charlotte Co., VA). Lallie's siblings include: William David (b. 1860), James Arthur (b. 1861) , Mary Susan (b. 1864) , Thomas Garland (b. 1866) , Charles Edward (b. June 9, 1867), Martha Netta (b. 1869), Sarah Frances (b. 1870),Richard Henry (b. 1874) , Joseph Walter (b. 1876), Abner Wheeler (b. February 26, 1878) , Lillie Holmes (b. 1880), Daniel Herbert (b. 1882). I have one more generation back on Lallie's father but Lallie's mother, Dolly Wheeler Berkley, is directly related to my line. I can take you back a quite bit from her mother's parents. I have some Smith's in my database for Campbell and Charlotte Cos. but I am not sure if they are yours. [email protected]
