There were several Scruggs that signed a petition as residents of Buckingham Co VA on November 10, 1786. Maybe one of them was related to your John H. (possibly father). Their names were Theod Scruggs, Jesse Scruggs, John Scruggs, Thomas Scruggs and possibly a G. Scruggs. These Scruggs are all listed in the book "Buckingham County, Virginia" " Church and Marriage Records" 1764 - 1822. Good luck.
