    3. Steamboat Days on the Cumberland ~ Honoring Livingston County on Its 175 Anniversary Published by The Livingston Ledger, Smithland, KY [1974] Old Livingston County 1630-1830 by Kathleen H. Henderson, Feature Writer for Magee Newspapers Page 20 ~ Possibly no more unlikely looking candidates could be found to be pioneers than Dr. Charles L. LEWIS and his wife, Lucy JEFFERSON LEWIS, who was a sister of President Thomas JEFFERSON. They were first cousins. Dr. Charles L. LEWIS was also a cousin of Meriwether LEWIS of the LEWIS & CLARK Expedition. Meriwether LEWIS also served as a secretary to Thomas JEFFERSON. But Dr. LEWIS and his wife, Lucy, came to Livingston County [Kentucky] and lived at the Gower House until their new home was built on the Cumberland [River] not to far from what is now Smithland [KY]. This home was named Rocky Hill. In 1811, one of the LEWIS's son, Randolph, died from a snake bite. Lucy herself died in 1811. Her memorial marker is across the Cumberland [River] from Smithland [KY], in the same little park with the marker for Lt. Col. John MONTGOMERY. Isham and Lilburn LEWIS in 1812 beheaded a Negro slave named, George. Their story is well-known locally that it will be only briefly presented here. Lilburn's second wife was Lelita RUTTER. Lilburn shot himself over his mother's grave as the sheriff's party came to arrest him. After Lucy LEWIS' death, Dr. LEWIS returned to Albermarle Co., VA, the home county of the LEWIS, JEFFERSON and CLARK families. An old book, "The Wedgewood Pitcher" tells this story, for legend says the slave was killed for breaking a cut glass pitcher... 04 Oct 1998 ~ 2pm Bob, I know this isn't exactly what you asked for, but I found the story interesting.
