Thank you for your quick response. Yes, I do believe that your information will be a lot of help. For one thing, it shows that there were Howells in Buckingham County in the olden times. The story goes that Mary Howell came from Buckingham County. Actually, the first wife of Jesse Thomas, Sarah (Sally) Wood came from England. Of her five kids, the first one was Elizabeth Hoggatt Thomas who was born about 1769 and she died in Buckingham County on February 1, 1854. She married Francis Lee Wilkerson. The Hoggatt middle name comes from the mother of Jesse Thomas. She was Elizabeth Hoggatt, and she was the wife of Job Thomas, father of Jesse. He lived in old Goochland, the part that was cut off to make Cumberland County. I can guess that these people lived near the border of Buckingham and Cumberland. You gave me the names and the dates for Sarah Howell and Nancy Gilliam Howell. They may have been close kin of Mary Howell. When I find the names of the parents of Mary, maybe the pieces will fall together. I wrote to the Clerk of the Circuit Count in Cumberland County, yesterday. They have records back to 1749. It is too bad that Buckingham does not have the old records. I appreciate your help. Thank you. I will keep your e-mail address and if I solve this little mystery, I will let you know.
