Do you (or anyone on the list) know more about the slate industry in Buckingham County? My grandfather left Buckingham in 1888 at the age of 16 to work in the slate industry of Northeastern PA. The quarries in PA were paying premium wages and the industry there was booming. I'm curious as to why this wasn't the case in Buckingham. -----Original Message----- From: Caddowens@aol.com <Caddowens@aol.com> To: VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com <VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, October 13, 1998 3:38 PM Subject: [VABUCKIN-L] Buckingham and the Welsh >Hi to the list > >I hope someone with more knowledge of this subject will elaborate on this - >but in response to why Buckingham - there are slate quarries and I was told >the Welsh were wonderful carvers, I don't know what else they did, but the >tombstones in Arvonia in the Arvonia Cemetery are a wonderful testament to >their workmanship.
