    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Falwell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HAC.2ACE/1183.2.1.1 Message Board Post: I have been researching the Falwell Family over past 10 years or so. I descend from Samuel Falwell (1792 VA - 1845 TN). For more details you can refer to my previous postings. I believe that your ancestor was closely related to my ancestor. Most likely Samuel was Elisha's Nephew or possibly cousin. Either way they were undoubtedly related. Delineating the relationships of the early Falwells of Virginia is challenging. I have a theory that I have discussed with other Falwell researchers. Perhaps it will be of some help for you. Please keep in mind that it is a hypothesis only and subject to revision. Any information to support or refute my hypothesis would be greatly appreciated. According to Goochland County, Virginia Tithe Lists, 1735-1749. James Nowlin is associated with William Fallwell. In 1749 the Last Will of James Nowling of Goochland County names a daughter as Judith Fallwell. Could this indicate that William Falwell was married to Judith Nowlin (daughter of James Nowlin)? This seems possible if not likely. It seems that William moved to Buckingham County sometime over the next 15 years, indicated by the following Tithe Lists of 1764 Buckingham County, Virginia. Genealogical Records of Buckingham County, Virginia 1764 List of Tithes Name #tithables #acres carriages William Fallwell 2 0 0 and Henry Fallwell Buckingham County Virginia Church and Marriage Records 1764-1822 Buckingham County 1764 Tax List William Falwell & Henry Fallwell * William is head of household. Tillotson Parish (Anglican) Falwell, John or Fallwell, supported 4/1773; 3/1774 Falwell, William or Fallwell 4/1773; 3/1774 Buckingham County Tithables in 1773 and 1774 Name Tithes in 1773 Tythes in 1774 Falwell, William -- 2 Falwell, James Moss, Thomas 5 3 (John Moss, Thomas Moss, Henry Falwell) Henry served during the Revolutionary War in the 7th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line. His service records indicate that he died Oct 4, 1777. Considering that Henry is closely associated with William and he was young enough to serve in the War, I assume he is the first-born son of William. John Falwell appears for the first time in 1773. I know nothing else about John. I assume he is also a son of William. Since Henry and John never appear at the same time, could they be the same person? James Falwell appears for the first time in 1774. He is listed as a tithable of William Falwell in 1774 but not in 1773. This indicates that James turned 16 years old in 1774. This corresponds to his Revolutionary War records that list his birth year as 1757. According to the Personal Property Tax Records of Buckingham County, one can see William’s Family growing. Richard appears in the first Tax Record in 1782. He must have been at least 16 years of age at this time. He is listed as > 21 years of age in 1785. Therefore he must have been born after James (1757) but before 1764. William Jr first appears in 1785 and is listed as > 21 years of age. Therefore he must have been born prior to 1764. John appears again in 1787. Is this the same John that last appeared in 1773-1774? David first appears by name in 1789. He is listed in the household of William Falwell. He actually appears for the first time in 1787 but is not named. In that year he is listed between the ages 16 – 21. Therefore David was born between 1771 and 1766. Elisha first appears in 1797. Extensive genealogical research has been done on Elisha and his descendants. He was born in 1776. He moved to Tennessee sometime after 1807. Elisha died there in 1857. Could Elisha have been the son of one of William’s sons rather than William himself? James appears to be the only real possibility, but he was only 19 when Elisha was born. This makes me think that Elisha is more likely the youngest son of William Falwell, Sr. William, James, Richard, John, William Jr, and David all appear sporadically throughout the years until 1795. In that year both William and John disappear from the tax records. They never appear again. During the same year that William and John disappear, a woman named Judith is listed. This indicates William, John, or both died sometime between 1794-1795. Judith must be the widow of one of these men. Since William has been associated with a Judith in the past, I assume that Judith is the widow of William. So where are we? William Falwell (? – about 1795) married to Judith Nowlin prior to 1749. 1) Henry Falwell a. Born: Unknown b. Death: Oct 4, 1777 2) James Falwell a. Born: 1757 b. Death: Oct 1, 1843 3) John Falwell a. Born: Unknown b. Death: Unknown 4) Richard Falwell a. Born: 1757 - 1764 b. Death: Unknown 5) William Falwell Jr. a. Born: 1757 - 1764 b. Death: Unknown 6) David Falwell a. Born: 1766 - 1771 b. Death: Unknown 7) Elisha Falwell a. Born: 1776 b. Death: 1857 in Tennessee

    3. Judith Falwell Going was my 5th great-grandmother. Below is the only information I have for her GOING, JUDITH; w, f; Dec 22 1859; 75 yr; parents William and Anna Falwell; spouse Jordan Going, Sr.; informed by son, Jordan Going Jr. (Appomattox County Deaths) (Source: Buckingham County Virginia Natives Who Died Elsewhere 1853-1896; by Roger G. Ward) Through my 4th great-grandfather and presumably Judith's son, Robert Monroe Going: NOTES: Robert Monroe Going - says he has been a head of household for 3 years. His father Jordan Going, died intestate several years ago, seized of 400-500 acres, leaving a widow and 10 children. Deponent is usually called by his middle name, "Monroe". (SOURCE: Burned County Data 1809-1848 as found in the Virginia Contested Election Files, Abstracted & Compiled by Benjamin B. Weisiger III, Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, Georgia, 1986, page 41) Only children that I have been able to confirm for Judith and William Going are: William Jr., Robert Monroe, and Jordan D. Going. I have seen quite a bit out on the internet as far as children of this couple, but the three above have been all that I have any documentation for.
