    3. I copied these records many years ago from the Library of Virginia, Buckingham County Death Records, 1853-1890, Bureau of Vital Statistics, Reel #5. Elizabeth Murphy, daughter of George and Martha (Bell) Christian of Amherst County, died June 26, 1853. Husband of James Murphy. Reported by C.L. Christian William J. Shepherd, son of B(ernard) G(aines) Shepherd, died on Feb. 24, 1853, 1 yr. 5 days. Father reported. Matthias S. Ayres, son of ____ and Elizabeth Ayres, died on Oct. 29, 1853. Wife was Martha R. Ayres. Thomas Christian died Oct. 3, 1853, aged over 90 years. Wife Mary Christian survived him. Elizabeth Coleman died on May 1, 1853 of paralysis. Husband was Julius Coleman. Death reported by daughter, Mrs. (Reese?) Sally Garnett died on Sept. 27, 1853. Husband was Samuel Garnett. Her parents were ____ and Ruby? Malloy. John Armistead, born in Cumberland County, died on April 4, 1853, inflamation of the bowels. Wife was Polly Armistead. Death reported by son William P. Armistead. Charles W. Christian died on July 4, 1853 of dropsy. Born in Amherst County. unmarried. Death reported by nephew, Charles L. Christian. Georgiana W. Davis, age 18, daughter of John and Jane Davis, died in July 1853 of diahrea Reuben Garnett, son of Nathaniel, died March 1, 1853 at age 70, in Charlotte Court house, VA. A.C. Garnett reported the death. Jane E. Jones, daughter of Jesse and Mary Miller, wife of Spotswood Jones, died Jan. 13, 1853, age 39 years. Sally Word died in December 1853 of pneumonia, age 74 years. Her father was Robert Jones. Death was reported by William H. Word. (Note: Sally Jones married Benjamin H. Word who died in 1816. They had four children.) The Word family will be included in the book that I plan to publish in 2002. William Ayres died on March 7, 1854 of consumption. Unmarried. Mother was Millie Ayres. Death reported by brother-in-law, John Guthrie. Mary A. Garnett died in 1854. Her husband was James Garnett. Bettie Allen died in 1856 at age 100. She was called a "pauper." Benjamin F. Word (Jr) died on Oct. 5, 1856, age 3. Parents were Benj. F. and Kate Word. James Snoddy died on Feb. 5, 1858, age 82 years. Quinn S. Word was killed in battle on Rich Mountain on July 11, 1861. His parents were William H. and Susannah Word. Other Buckingham County boys were killed in the same battle on the same day including: William S. Smith, age 22 William A. Gillespe, age 20 I copied only what I needed and was of interest to me, including marriage records such as: James A. Guthrey, age 26, married Susan R(ebecca) Apperson, age 18, daughter of Sterling G. and Eliza Apperson, May 16, 1856 by the Rev. William Taylor. Benjamin F. Shepherd, son of William and Martha G(aines) Shepherd, married Malissa Word on Dec. 20, 1866. Emily J. Guthrey married William Williams on May 16, 1860. All of the original records above were burned in the Courthouse fire in 1869, but duplicate copies of marriages, births and deaths were filed in Richmond. Here are some more death records from the same microfilm reel, but you may also find these in the Buckingham Courthouse. Peter Mosley died on Nov. 7, 1884, age 76 Permilia Ayres died on Sept. 15, 1884 at age 62. Her husband was James L. Ayres and parents were ____ and Elizabeth Spencer. Susan E. Austin died on April 20, 1881 at age 70 yrs. Her parents were Rolph and Mary Eldridge. Death was repoerted by W.M. Cabell (sister's husband). William H. Word died on Nov. 31, 1887 at age 81. His wife reported, Joanna B(ranch) Word. Merchant. Archibald Austin died in March 1886 at age 71. Records states his parents as Archie and Sophronia (Adcock) Austin. Death reported by J. P. Adcock. Nancy J. Guthrey, age 22, married Willie W. Newton, age 21, son of Edwin and Mary Newton, on June 15, 1870. Mother was Elizabeth Guthrie (nee Ayres) and father was John Guthrie. If you recognize this Harris line which is John Harris, Norborne Harris and Clayton (who left for Iowa around 1891) I would like to hear from you.
