Since there is such a long list of names on this petition, I'll ask my questions at the beginning. Does anyone recognize or claim Samuel Harris? Elijah G. Harris? or John Harris? Does anyone have more information about where any of these men were living in this time frame? How about where they were living before they move to the Buckingham area? Do you think that these men lived in the part of Buckingham that became Appomattox? Do you think that they lived in the part of Buckingham that remained Appomattox? Do you think that they were from both parts of the county? Here is a copy of the petition OPPOSING the formation of the new county (Appomattox from Buckingham) dated January 11, 1832 This petition opposing the formation of a new County stated that the court house was in the center of the county and would have to be moved at great expense as it would be only seven miles from the new border. They are at a loss to assign a reason for the dissatisfaction in the uper end of the county and they believe that it does not have the approval of the majority of the inhabitants of the proposed new county.
