It is situated on the mouth of Slate Creek, on an elevated bank about a 1/4 of a mile from the James River. On the other side of the James River is Fluvanna County. My guess is it is about 8 miles to the Cumberland County line. Cumberland County is on the same side of the James River as Buckingham (the South side). Back in the early 1800s New Canton was a place of considerable trade. At one time it contained 36 dwelling houses, 3 mercantile stores, 1 tavern, 1 flour mill, 1 tanyard, and 1 saddler. On the Slate River several slate quarries were opened. An iron foundry also operated in New Canton. In 1836 there was 1 attorney, 1 physician, and a population of 50. There is a post office there now that serves a very large rural area. I do not know of any business that is operating in the village now. Ruby Talley Smith
