These two people were my wife's great grandparents. What puzzles me is that Malissa Shepherd's father was Thomas H. Word; not Melvin Word, as proven by the Feb. 27, 1846 issue of the Richmond Whig, page 4, column 5 + other records such as census. I know it was confusing when Caroline Word married Thomas H. Word, whose name was the same as Carolyn's father, Thomas H. Word. The person who reported the death of Malissa (below) was Lelia Jane Shepherd (1876-1951). Lelia was sometimes called the beauty queen of Buckingham County, I have pictures of all the people named below, except the mysterious "Melvin" Word. Does anyone have further information on why this error may have occurred. Ancestry.com does not show a Melvin Word in Buckingham County. Wilmer L.
