I have done some census analysis and the group that you talk about is one of my "orphan" SPENCER groups. You included enough info that combined with my ata - I think I know how they fit and want to see what you think. Your group Capt. William SPENCER b 1760-1770 per 1840 census (page 10, line 20) his son John R. SPENCER b 1808 and in 1840 census (page 8, line 18) you describe John R. SPENCER's family. Question - Who is Capt William related to ? OTHER DATA Nathan SPENCER b 1788 was son of Moses SPENCER b 1763 in 1840 census, Nathan is (page 10, line 21) probably next door to Capt William SPENCER Moses' parents were John and Mary SPENCER with children Moses, William, Joseph, Elizabeth, Patty SPECULATION Moses and Capt. William are brothers Moses son (Nathan) and Capt William's son (John R.) are cousins and live on adjacent parcels of land that were originally one piece of land. Other DATA 1840 census Moses on page 18, line 18 Joseph F. on page 18-30 b abt 1816 John R. on 18-8 What do your think ??? I don't see John R. family after 1850. Where did they go? Do you have any info tying Capt William to be Moses' brother ? Rob Ayres **************************************************************************** ***************** I have entered this family in my database, but not connected to any of my known kin...I have considered the prime name for my Samuel's father as a "James", then a William, possibly Samuel..and this below possible James in the will is This below message from another researcher gave me the idea for Spencer surname. =========== Robertson/Spencer in Buckingham Date: 12/30/02 11:42:36 PM Eastern Standard Time To: Caddowens@aol.com I see from Buckingham co. mailing list archives that you are interested in Samuel Robertson who was on the 1860 Buckingham Co. census with wife Sallie. Also in this household was Samuel Spencer, age 21. I can identify this Samuel Spencer as the son of John R. Spencer. You also noted from Roger Ward's book that John R. Spencer sold land that was part of Samuel Robertson's estate. I'm thinking that perhaps John R. Spencer's wife Elizabeth was a Robertson. John R. Spencer, son of Capt. William Spencer of Buckingham County, was born about 1808, married about 1835 to Elizabeth H. ___. Their children were named William J., Samuel T., Jane, Mary J., John B., Martha E., and Sophia W. John R. Spencer's sister Martha married Thomas Robertson, son of Hugh and Susannah (Ligon) Robertson. Capt. William's estate was also distributed to wives of Archer T. Robertson and James A. Robertson, who were probably his granddaughters by a deceased, unknown son. These Spencers seem to have been extremely closely involved with the Robertsons, and that might give you a clue as to how your Samuel is related to the other Robertsons that the Spencers are related to. I hope this helps. Please let me know if your figure out anything." Alice
