(In most cases, when the spelling of the name changed it > was when they came to America from elsewhere..would like to know where > family comes from) > This family has been traced back to Thomas DUNCOMB b abt 1663. He married Joyce PICKETT who died and left a will in Stafford Co, VA. The name is found spelled various ways DUNCOMBE, DUNCOMB, etc. The first one who spelled it as DUNKUM was John DUNKUM who was born in Stafford Co, VA 28 Dec 1748 and moved to Cumberland Co, VA where he died. We know he chose to spell it as DUNKUM because a letter that he wrote has survived. I have an idea as to why he decided to change the spelling but it is just my guess. It was deliberate and not a case of the clerk at a courthouse or a census taker misspelling the name. Ruby Talley Smith
