Hello, I am Susan Troutner, and I am researching my ancestors from Buckingham County. My great-grandfather, John Anderson Cobbs, left Buckingham in 1849 for Highland County, VA. He was the son of Augustus Cobbs and Frances Abraham. Augustus' parents were Thomas Cobbs (1760-1823) and Nancy Watson (1767-after 1850), married about 1784 in Albemarle County. My burning question is: Who were the parents of this Thomas Cobbs and his brother William? According to Ward's Land Tax Summaries and Implied Deeds, Vol. 1, Thomas Cobbs purchased 1,000 acres in 1795 from Thomas Cobbs and unknown Weaver. He purchased additional land along the Slate River from 1799 until 1818, and owned approximately 2,242 acres at his death. Then, after 1823, all transitions are listed as "Estate of Thomas Cobbs" Augustus sold his 252 acres on the Slate River, seven miles northeast from the courthouse, and on the 1830 census appears to have moved closer to his wife's family, the Abrahams and Kitchens. Augustus' wife was Frances Abraham. Her sister Judith married a Kitchen. Ward also states that Thomas Cobbs' residence was listed as on the Slate River, five miles northeast of the Buckingham Court House with land adjacent on Muddy Creek. His brother William Cobbs' residence was 8 miles northeast of the courthouse. If anyone has information that would connect Thomas and William back to the next generation, I would appreciate this help. Susan Troutner: I have much WATSON info but the only Nancy I have was b. 1793. The Watsons I have came from over the line in Powhatan Co. and several, including my husband's William Watson (Rev. Soldier) migrated over into B'ham Co. I'd be glad to look for any specific WATSON name. Watson was a common name around.
