I've heard of this custom too from a variety of researchers, but it must have been a custom that was difficult to follow for all concerned when migration had placed long distances between them and their homes. Personally, I'm glad MY mother came home to Virginia from Japan to have me! Eric G. Grundset Library Director DAR Library 1776 D St., N.W. My mother and dad lived in one county in south Ala. When it came time for me to be born, she went back to her mother's county for me to be born. When I was an adult I asked somebody in the family WHY she did that. The reply was it was the custom back then for the expectant mother to go back to he mother's for the child to be born. The custom. But this did not happen when my sister was born two years later. I don't know why.
