It is where the 3 counties come together. It is near Schuyler and "Walton's Mountain", of TV fame. Some other trivia, it was laid out in the 18th century on land patented in 1730 by Allen Howard, hence its name of Howardsville. There were attempts for it to become an important trading point on the James River. But Scottsville, located on the great bend of the river a few miles downstream out distanced Howardsville as a trading port. Howardsville is at the mouth of the Rockfish River which had very little traffic because of its rocky, shallow bed. I have studied very little about the Civil War so I cannot help you there, but I am sure there is much written material available. Ruby Talley Smith
