This is a continuation of my questions about the Petitions to Form Appomattox , Virginia from Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, and Prince Edward Counties 1825-1845 by Harriet A Chilton on page four of this manuscript is a NOTICE that Harriet Chilton says was probably posted on the court house doors two months prior to the annual elections. NOTICE Is herby given that a Petition will be presented to the next General Assembly, praying for a New County to be formed from parts of Buckingham, Prince Edward, Charlotte, and Campbell Agreeably to the lines herein specified, (viz) Beginning at the mouth of David's Creek on James River, thence in line to the head of Holiday Creek, thence down the same, as it meanders to Appomatix River: thence down the same to the Cut Banks; thence a line to the mouth of Cabin Branch on Vaughn's Creek; thence up the said Creek to its head; thence a lin to Merryman's or Land's; thence along the Public Road leading by McKinney's Old Store to the fork of the Lynchburg road, about a mile north of the Red House; thence along the Lynchburg Road to the Mill formerly owned by Samuel Branch, Esq., on Falling River; Thence up the said River to the Mouth of Reedy Creek; thence n line to Hunter's Old Tavern (now Glover's) thence a line to Sterling C. Anderson's; thence a line to the Mouth of Scott's Branch, about a mile below the Mouth of Joshun's Creek on James River; and thence down the River to the beginning. THe Court house to be located at Clover Hill in the now County of Prince Edward. february 26 My questions: I would like help with locating any of the named places, but in particular that of Sterling C. Anderson's. Also does it make sense to interpret the beginning (at the mouth of David's Creek on James River) to be the corner shared between Appomattox, Campbell and Amherst? and the final place (thenc n line to the Mouth of Scott's Branch, about a mile below the Mouth of Joshun's Creek on James River....and thence DOWN the River to the beginning.) to be the corner shared with Nelson, Buckingham and Appomatox? Am I correct in assuming that Down the River means towards the southwest in this area? Thanks for your help. Marsha in WV

Hello to all: Last fall I made a genealogy jaunt during which I spent a day at the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg. I copied several pages at that time from a manuscript written by Harriett A. Chilton in 1989. It is titled Petitions to Form Appomatix County, Virginia from Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, and Prince Edward Counties 1825-1845. The call number in the library is F 232 .A6 c5 1989 I did not copy the entire manuscript. I would like to do a bit of discussing on what I copied and would like to hear anyone's input on this. The gist of the explanation written by Harriett Chilton is that petitions were presented to form the new County as described above as early as 1825 and continued until the County was established in 1845. These petitions, both for and against, are on file in the Virginia State Library in Richmond, Virginia. Harriet Chilton did not copy all of them. In 1825 a meeting was held at Alexander Patteson's Tavern at Clover Hill in Prince Edward County to discuss a new county called LaFayette. Present at this meeting were John T. Bocock, George Christian, Joel W. Flood, Thomas H. Flood, John Harris, Clement Jennings, Jesse Jennings, Archibald LeGrand, Thomas A. LeGrand, Joseph McAllister, William C. McAllister, James McDearmon, Alexander Patteson, Reason Porter, David Robertson, Richmond Statham, Samuel Stewart, Moses Sweeney, William Trent and David Walker. Clover Hill was renamed Appomatox Court House when the new County was established twenty years later in 1845. Patteson's tavern is still standing as part of th Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (at the time of the writing of this manuscript....according to the author. I am going to stop her and right again when I get time. .. My questions thus far are: First, who is John Harris? Is he the son of William Harris born in 1755 on the James River in Cumberland county, VA and died 22 April 1838? I have a John Harris in my data base who I believe to have been the man named Jack Harris in the Harris Bible pages that are in the possession of my husband's uncle. According to the Bible pages, Jack Harris was born 1 March 1784 and died 13 march 1852. So this man would have been 41 in 1825--the perfect age to have been part of a meeting.... Next does anyone know anything about the other men at the meeting? intermarriages between families? where they lived in this time frame? where they had come from before living where they were living? anything that would shed light on this meeting? Thanks so much for any help on this that you might be able to give me. Marsha in WV
We are planning a trip back east this summer. While my husband is "playing" at the reenactment of Manassas, I want to do some genealogical research. Where would be the best places to research Buckingham County residents for the time period before 1825 ? Any and all suggestions appreciated. Thanks Dianne in cold, wet, rainy Oregon
Fran, I would appreciate it if you could send me a the map also. I too had it at one time but it seems to have taken legs and walked off. Thanks in advance. Marlene West Perry

Hi ! I'm looking for anything I can find on Willis CARTER. He was born in Virginia abt 1788, parents unknown. I find him listed on the 1819 Tax list for Buckingham County. He married Clarissa/Clarinda ?, prob Buckingham County. Their first two children were born there. William H. CARTER was b 1820 and George W CARTER was b 1824. They must have left Virginia soon after as the next child, Andrew J. CARTER was born in Indiana in 1827, as were the subsequent children, James, unknown daughter and Susan. The family is on the Indiana census in 1830 and thereafter. I cannot locate them on the 1820 census. Any scrap on information will be greatly appreciated. My late grandmother always claimed to be descended from Governor CARTER but I just can't seem to get past Willis. Thank you. Dianne in Oregon

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HAC.2ACE/67.166 Message Board Post: The referenced Stephen Davidson in Buckingham was born in Georgia in 1785, per the 1850 census in KY (where Stephen had moved). As such, I am not at all convinced that he was a member of the same family as the other Davidsons who were in Buckingham in 1810 and 1820 ( there was no known "GA connection" for them whatsoever). Stephen was on the 1830 Campbell Co., VA census, and as stated above, he eventually moved to KY. There was also another/older (born about 1757) Stephen Davidson on the 1810 and 1820 Buckingham censuses, but he WAS a member of the other family in Buckingham. I have no idea if the John Davidson in Buckingham on the 1810 census was John Benning Davidson (from the other family) or if he could have been the father of Stephen from GA. At present, I see no eidence that Stephen's father came to Buckingham, but who knows? There was no John Davidson on the 1820 Buckingham census. There were several John Davidsons out in Bedford/Campbell Co., VA from the late 1700s though the early 1800s. They were from a family that does not appear to be related to the other Davidson family in Buckingham, but they COULD have been related to Stephen Davidson from GA. By the way, the Stephen from GA eventually started to spell the family name "Davisson."
