You might check out the Library of Virginia website. They have a lot of info on some old homes by county. I found one of my ancestor's homes in Fluvanna Co on that site. A survey was done in the 1930's about many homes, and their history. You might luck out and find yours on the Library of Virginia website. ----- Original Message ----- From: dunleavy2@verizon.net<mailto:dunleavy2@verizon.net> To: VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 04, 2006 2:43 PM Subject: [VABUCKIN] Re: Old Homeplaces in Buckingham This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Houseman living next to Bryant Walden in FL 1910 census, but Bryant was born in Georgia (not VA). Think he is listed on FL 1900 census as Bryan Waldon, in Hillsborough. Hard to make out the names of the daughters.
I read the 1900 Appomattox census as Adolphus Housman living in Clover Hill area and born March of 1878, and Sam Houseman living in South Side Mag. District and born in October of 1879. They may have been brothers, but does not look as if they were twins. My Wright family was from Appomattox and they married Walden also. Maybe Sam went to Florida because the Waldens moved there. Just a thought. Good luck. Sandra
J. A. Houseman W/50, W-Elvira, 40, Son Adolphus Age 1 living in Buckingham Co., VA 1880. Found my grandfather Samuel Glover Housman (sp) and Adolphus both living in Appomatox Co. but both are farmed out as apprentices. Adolphus in one part of county, GF in another part. GF born 1879 at same time as Adolphus.from 1900 census. My grandfather goes from there by 1904-05 to Bradenton, Manatee Co.,FL. Marries my grandmother, Sallie Walden and my Mother, Bessie, born 1908. Problem: No other Hous(e)mans in Buckingham Co. Va. 1900. None living in Appomatox Co. 1900 except my GFand unknown Adolphus. GF leaves in a hurry and goes 900 miles to FL?????? Very secretive family. Fable says he and his brother were orphaned and "sent" to FL. on train. Cannot locate any parents. Cannot find J.A. or Elvira in 1900 census. GF was well educated, could read and write, was a formal blacksmith and made a living as such. Drank a lot, fathered 9 children. Children never explained to me about him. Both his parents were born and raised in VA. A number of Glovers in Appomatox Co., but none have 1 year old male child by another name in 1880 census. Was Adolphus maybe his twin and he did not show on 1880 census by error, or what? Did Adolphus get killed mysteriously and Samuel left. What a screen play!! Any help would be appreciated. Samuel died in Manatee Co. Bradenton about 1961. Have his death certificate but no info. Does Buckingham Co. have any viable records for 1870-1900? Any help appreciated. Questions: Who was he and who were his parents. Was he running from a situation that he could not handle and Appomattox Co. and why Manatee Co., FL. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I took a picture of the memorial and have it "somewhere"! I do not know the names found on the memorial. Do you have first names of TONEY and/or MANN? The following are ones that MIGHT be on it: MANN Beck Robert Edward Russell Edgar TONEY Edward James Harold Milton James Franklin John Austin John Lee Marion Everitte Robert Samuel William Elmo William Wiley I can probably help you with additional information if you can tell me the ones you want. If all else fails I can try to find the picture but that will take awhile as I am not too well organized at this point. Ruby Talley Smith

Since there is such a long list of names on this petition, I'll ask my questions at the beginning. Does anyone recognize or claim Samuel Harris? Elijah G. Harris? or John Harris? Does anyone have more information about where any of these men were living in this time frame? How about where they were living before they move to the Buckingham area? Do you think that these men lived in the part of Buckingham that became Appomattox? Do you think that they lived in the part of Buckingham that remained Appomattox? Do you think that they were from both parts of the county? Here is a copy of the petition OPPOSING the formation of the new county (Appomattox from Buckingham) dated January 11, 1832 This petition opposing the formation of a new County stated that the court house was in the center of the county and would have to be moved at great expense as it would be only seven miles from the new border. They are at a loss to assign a reason for the dissatisfaction in the uper end of the county and they believe that it does not have the approval of the majority of the inhabitants of the proposed new county.
