Hi Margaret, I have Buckingham FITZGERALD's.. Mine were Rev War William Fitzgerald who married first (forgot..maybe it was Sarah Epps.) and had 6 children. After his wife died and his first love's second husband died the two of them got back together and married on Christmas Eve (she also then had 6 kids from her two marriages); a double marriage with one of his kids marrying one of her kids the same time as their own marriage. His second wife was Catherine (sometimes shown with a K) (nee) Crawley ( can't remember hubby #1 right now) Jones. I believe 3 of his kids eventually married 3 of her kids. My ancestors were one of those pairs Francis Fitzgerald married Francis Jones. This part of the story was in Nottoway, before Buckingham was their home. In that line a Fitzgerald boy, James Henderson Fitzgerald, who became Reverend and was pastor of the Mayesville Presby in B'ham married a daughter of Church Elder Rolfe Eldridge, Jr....Lucy Eldridge. (Direct descendant of Pocahontas and John Rolfe) Her grandpa was a Buckingham Rev War veteran also, Benjamin Moseley.the first to be buried at Rolfeton in B'ham. That was 1799 , the same year Geo Washington died. OK..on with my Fitz. James and Lucy had 4 children in B'ham; 2 boys and 2 girls. Neither of the girls had any children. One died as a young adult and one lived in a home.(mental??)..I'm not sure why, but was unable to care for herself. The 2 boys both had children. My line was thru the son named (another....) Francis Fitzgerald. (The other son was J. H. Jr) Francis married Mary Hill from Albemarle Co. They had lots of kids in Buckingham...the old home place still stands (tiny for all the kids...two story, slate roof) One of those Fitzgerald kids was my Grandma, Fanny Fitzgerald who moved to Prince Edward County when she married (age 18 I think) and old geezer who was petty well off. Alexander E. Cralle. He (G'Pa)died a couple years before I was born in PE County....while living at G'Ma Cralle's house there. Two of the boys lived downstairs each with wife and kids and G'Ma lived upstairs. G'Ma's sister, lived on in B'ham, never married, taught school and was very active in the Mayesville Church. their Historian I believe. Aunt Carrie Fitzgerald. Anyone sound like a connection with your Fitzgerald's? Srely must be a connection there somewhere? Jane A Virginian living in Florida In a message dated 7/11/2006 11:29:07 A.M. There are two postcards (both by W.E. Burgess, I believe) of the Civil War Monument. One shows a group of 50-60 mostly men, but a few women, seated in front of what appears to be the courthouse. The postcard says Copyright 1908, by. W.E. Burgess Photographed & published by W.E. Burgess, Scottsville, Va. Confederate Veterans A Photograph taken at the unveiling of the confederate soldiers monument at Buckingham C.H. June 30, 1908. There are no names on the postcard of those pictured and I have never been able to find any list of names. The other is a picture of the monument itself with many people standing around it although with their backs to the camera. No person's face can be seen. I do not have a copy of the postcards. I have only seen a scanned copy of the postcard that my uncle sent me before he died. Both photos are copyrighted though.
I also seem to have missed the original information. My Harris family was from the area. The family folklore says that Samuel W. Harris was present at Appomatix the day of the surrender. I would love to see photos of the area and possible veterans. The first Bagby I can find is John Bagby, married to Elizabeth Bates in 1793. He had five children of whom William Fleming Bagby was one. He married Arianna Phillips in 1836.
