    3. Another Slate River District death certificate I'd be interested in is that of Elbridge Duncan whom I have last located in the 1930 census at age 73 living as a boarder in the home of Harrison W . and Ann S. Watkins. If you happen to run across that one, I would be very interested in the information from it. Any information that anyone can share on Elbridge, or the Watkins couple he was boarding with, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! 3. I'm sorry, I thought I had sent an email explaining the death certificates. My bad. These death certificates are NOT available online nor through inter-library loan. You have to physically go to the Library of Virginia (Richmond) to search for them. There are 10 reels of indexes divided into 4-5 year segments. For example if you know that your grandfather, John Doe, died sometime between the 1920 census and the 1930 census you would search the index reels that cover that 10 year span. If he is listed, it will show something like this: Doe, John Buckingham July 21, 1928 843-17250 That last number would then point you to the specific reel that contains his death certificate. Once you find it, you can then print it for a cost of 75 cents. The microfilm reels are not an easy read so I suggest taking a good magnifying glass with you and go prepared with a list of people that you want to search, first those with death dates that you know (from tombstones or bible records) and then those that you don't know but have a general idea. I started searching probaby 4 years ago and initially only copied those for my family (passing by hundreds of other Buckingham certificates). As I got more comfortable in searching and could do it faster (and had some spare bucks on my library cards) I would copy the certificates of those found in the Buckingham section on the reel. If you know of someone that can use the information, then by all means share it with them. I would try to scan the boards when I came home to see if I could find matches with any extra certificates I had and did have some luck but not always. Being a fulltime student, my genealogy trips these past couple of years have been fewer and I had to cram as much in on my breaks as possible. I had a few days before starting back to college so I thought I would try to post some of the certificates I had in hopes that it might find a match on the board. Below is the link to the Library of Virginia site on the death certificates. Again, there is a binder with a FEW certificates at Buckingham County House but mostly for 1912-1917 and my understanding is only those where the family bought a copy to the courthouse (meaning not all people that died in that timeframe have a certificate in Buckingham). Hope this helps. http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/vital/death-certificates/index.htm -----Original Message----- From: CLGriffinY@aol.com [mailto:CLGriffinY@aol.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 15, 2006 2:10 PM To: VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VABUCKIN] Jamerson/Guthrie/LeSueur & Flippen/Jamerson/Guthrie/Harris Someone who would like to have this information is a Jamerson descendant who works at the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, Virginia. 3. This part of the Gormus family is confusing. Pattie (Patricia Elizabeth Blundell) Gormus and William R. Gormus had at least 6 children: I have their marriage date as November 12, 1871) Georgie Gormus who married Charlie Harris Oliva Gormus who married Lee Hatcher Betty Walker Gormus who married William David Walden (one of their children, Charlie, married his first cousin, Blanch Gormus who was my mother's older sister) William R. (Dutch) Gormus who married Julie E. Moss Pendleton John Robert Gormus who married Lou Madison Wooten Josephine (Josie) Gormus who married Hugh William Oslin. In the family of William R. (Dutch) Gormus the spelling of the name was changed to Gormours. I haven't been able to find much on the Blundell family. In the 1860 census Mary Blundell, age 76, female born VA. Living with her were Roda (Rhoda) A. Blundell age 32, female, John age 16, male, Charles age 12, male, Gloria age 10 female, Patsy age 8 female, Milded age 5 female, Thomas age 2 male. In the 1870 census I found Stephen Jackson Childress listed living with a black family by the name of Wood. He is listed as a blacksmith. Immediately under his name is Rhoda Blundell, age 42, seamstress, Pattie age 17, seamstress, Mildred age 15, seamstress, Thomas age 12, Joseph age 9, Mary age 8, Robert age 3. It's my belief that Stephen Jackson Childress is the father of Joseph, Mary and Robert but not the father of Pattie or Mildred or Thomas???? Any help with this family would be appreciated. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kim Shumaker Clark" <kim.clark@adelphia.net> To: <VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 14, 2006 9:12 PM Subject: [VABUCKIN] Gormas/Blundell > Certificate #25301 > County of Buckingham > District of Marshall > Name: Pattie Gormas > Residence: New Canton, Va > Female, White, Widowed > Date of Birth: March 3, 1849 > 81 years, 8 months, 20 days > Occupation: Housekeeper > Birthplace: Buckingham County > Father: John Blundell (born Buckingham) > Mother: "Don't Know" > Date of Death November 23, 1930 > Burial: At Home on 11/25/1930 > W.R. 2. Wilmer L. Kerns
    3. The story about these murders is found on pages 349-350 of my book Waltons of Old Virginia and Sketches of Families in Central Virginia. It is interesting to note that Mrs. George Fitzgerald reported these deaths in 1936. She is the same source of my information, given to me in 1975. I attended a Davis gathering earlier this year in Buckingham County. There was a man named Phaup in attendance, who told about the murders. I believe that he said he was the financial manager of Hampden-Sidney College. He has some rare pictures of the Davis family, taken in England, that I wish had been available for the book. He also has possession of the Joshua Davis family Bible. Wilmer L.
