An interesting question just came up over the identity of the wife of Stephen Ayres Duncan, son of Matthias Duncan and Sarah F. Dunkum. I would be very grateful if someone who is familiar with this family could share what they have on Stephen's wife. Thank you! Hi Kim, Bettie Sue Denton's father was born in Fluvanna county. Don't know where England comes in the picture. Bettie Sue was my great grandmother's sister. My great grandmother was Martha Jane Denton. Thank you for the information and for all the work you and others are doing to get the info out to fellow researchers. Deborah Robertson Peak

To help others understand even more under the Virginia Code of April 11, 1853... The clerk of the County Court and the Coporation Court were each required to transmit to the auditor of public accounts, a copy of his marriages for the preceeding year... I am taking a leap here but I assume the same law applied to deaths and births for each county. For the Courthouses that were destroyed by fires we were fortunate to have these records saved by a Virginia law enacted in 1853 that covered the years of approxmiately 1853 to 1896. Kim Clarks work and sharing brings another example to light that even if we are told no records survived from a courthouse that even thou original records did not survive there are some handwritten copies of certain items still there for the determined researcher. Thanks a million Kim!!!!!!!!!!! These two people were my wife's great grandparents. What puzzles me is that Malissa Shepherd's father was Thomas H. Word; not Melvin Word, as proven by the Feb. 27, 1846 issue of the Richmond Whig, page 4, column 5 + other records such as census. I know it was confusing when Caroline Word married Thomas H. Word, whose name was the same as Carolyn's father, Thomas H. Word. The person who reported the death of Malissa (below) was Lelia Jane Shepherd (1876-1951). Lelia was sometimes called the beauty queen of Buckingham County, I have pictures of all the people named below, except the mysterious "Melvin" Word. Does anyone have further information on why this error may have occurred. Ancestry.com does not show a Melvin Word in Buckingham County. Wilmer L. I should add that I did not receive any INDEXES however from the interlibrary loan. (I can't recall trying to find if they are loanable, but I suspect they are not) But it is not an impossible job to search through the film looking for a specific name considering it is not all that long and it beats traveling to Richmond. My bad. These death certificates are NOT available online nor through inter-library loan. You have to physically go to the Library of Virginia (Richmond) to search for them. There are 10 reels of indexes divided into 4-5 year segments. For example if you know that your grandfather, John Doe, died sometime between the 1920 census and the 1930 census you would search the index reels that cover that 10 year span. If he is listed, it will show something like this: Doe, John Buckingham July 21, 1928 843-17250 That last number would then point you to the specific reel that contains his death certificate. Once you find it, you can then print it for a cost of 75 cents. The microfilm reels are not an easy read so I suggest taking a good magnifying glass with you and go prepared with a list of people that you want to search, first those with death dates that you know (from tombstones or bible records) and then those that you don't know but have a general idea. I started searching probaby 4 years ago and initially only copied those for my family (passing by hundreds of other Buckingham certificates). As I got more comfortable in searching and could do it faster (and had some spare bucks on my library cards) I would copy the certificates of those found in the Buckingham section on the reel. If you know of someone that can use the information, then by all means share it with them. I would try to scan the boards when I came home to see if I could find matches with any extra certificates I had and did have some luck but not always. Being a fulltime student, my genealogy trips these past couple of years have been fewer and I had to cram as much in on my breaks as possible. I had a few days before starting back to college so I thought I would try to post some of the certificates I had in hopes that it might find a match on the board. Below is the link to the Library of Virginia site on the death certificates. Again, there is a binder with a FEW certificates at Buckingham County House but mostly for 1912-1917 and my understanding is only those where the family bought a copy to the courthouse (meaning not all people that died in that timeframe have a certificate in Buckingham).
