Hi Dot, Saw your query on the Buckingham Co. page about your Duncans and had to say Hi. I am a Duncan, too: Anna Marie b. 1939 in Cincinnati, dau. of Charles Duncan b. 1909 Pickett Co. TN who was son of Willis (Henry Wilson) Duncan b. 1865 in Anderson Co. TN who was son of Wilson Duncan b. 1820 in Anderson Co. TN son of Moses Duncan and Mary Frost - Moses b. 1792 (I believe, without looking) Moses father was Benjamin Duncan a Rev. War Soldier b. 1755 and died in KY. Our line goes back to Rev. Wm Duncan of Perthshire SCT in the mid 1600's. Maybe we are cousins way way back. Best of luck to you. Ann in Wisconsin akunkel@badger.tds.net
Hi Fellow Researchers, I am continuing to search for my Banton relatives from Buckingham. I have two related questions which some of you may be able to help me with. 1. My parents told me about a young man with a Banton surname who became a major league baseball player. I believe he brought their newspaper as a youngster. I cannot remember his name. Anyone heard of a Banton who played baseball at this level probably as late as the 40's and early 50's? 2. I have in my possesion a photograph which I received among many pictures from my mom. The picture is of a graying middle-aged man, tall and handsome and he is flanked by two young ladies, possibly in their early 20's. The ladies are also tall and slim. Although they are not dressed alike, they could be twins. This party of three is standing beside a 1930 era auto which appears not to have seen a drop of soap and water on its' sheetmetal for many weeks. On the back of the picture are the names--- Jimmy Maxey, Elsee Banton, and Lizzie Banton. I can only assume that this photo was shot in Buckingham since that is where my father is from and he descended from the Buckingham Bantons. If any of these names is familiar to any of you, I would be delighted to hear from you. Thank you sincerely for the time you took to read this. Jim Taylor Newport News, Va.
If any of you know Delores Ellis email address, please let me know. She contacted me on 2/25/98 and I lost her address. Need to contact her about: My grGrandpa Hezekiah Taylor b.1799 VA married first to Sally Ellis in 1818 in Campbell Co. VA. Hezekiah was son of Edward and Elizabeth ___Taylor of Campbell Co. VA. Would appreciate any help to reach Delores. Thanks! Ann in Wisconsin akunkel@badger.tds.net
I'm looking for a copy of the old Buckingham Church minutes. Particularly any mention of a John Bradley and/or wife Mary in the years of late 1700's to early 1800's. Thanks - Finley R. Bradley
Hi I am researching a Randall Fountain (early 1800's) son of Celia Rex/Fountain. Her other children were William and Lousia. The family lived on the William Rex plantation and were later sold to William Snead; I believe the location was Fluvanna County, Va. The Fountain boys became boatmen on the James River. They later moved to Buckingham, VA. The names may appear as slaves or as individuals; records at that time were very limited. Please, has anyone come across these names during there research. I am not sure of the dates, but I beleive they were in Buckingham during 1896/7. I would also appreciate any pointers on where I can look. Im new to geneology research. Thanks Lejay
I know that the Robertsons were close to the Taylors. There was a old book written about the Robertsons I believe. I have it in my notes somewhere. And on my Captain James Taylor's will 1843, Robertson was a witness. Don't have my notes right here. Also there was a boy Robertson on Census with the family of William H. Taylor grandson of James a Baptist preacher. I believe he was 9. If you are interested I will look it up. Another name listed on will Grandison Moseley. Linda Z.
You betcha, Did you get some of your data on Wm Emmet Kyle and Ann Gibson from the book, Notable So. Families by Armstrong V. V-VI pg. 51 in the chapter on the "History of the Crockett Family"? That is where I got some of it. There is some greatstuff on Mc CAULAND that I got of the internet. I don't have Wm Emmet KYLE'S (1752-1793) parents except that his grandparents were David b.1687 Brackey Mills, Tyrone Co.,Ireland (bro. of my ancestor) and Elizabeth McKELVEY (I think Wm Emmet's mother was also a McKELVEY). I sure need to find someone who is an expert on the MC KELVEYS because they are throughout our family. But I've put out dozens of queries to no avail. Your Wm Emmett KYLE's brothers were Jeremiah (b.1766 Brackey Mills, Tyrone Co., IRE-d.aft 1800 in VA?) and David b.1768-d.1845 Rockingham Co., VA. Jeremiah md Mary "Polly" KYLE b.1773 and David md. Elizabeth Rosalie KYLE b.1769 and both girls were daus. of Joseph (b.1732 Brackey Mills,Tyrone Co., Ireland-d.1808 Botetourt Co., VA) and Jane Duiquid (b.1749 Scotland-d.1824 Botetourt Co., VA) KYLE. Joseph was a son of my Robert (b.1702 Brackey Mills, Tyrone Co., VA-d. Charlottesville, Buckingham Co., VA) and his wife Betty Ann Campbell (b.1704-d.1779, dau. of Hugh II) KYLE. Robert and Betty Campbell Kyle lived in Old Albemarle Co., VA. Hopes that you can help me with your line? Alice: Try this http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/GNISQuery. This works for me for mapping URL. Another subject. I am ggg grandson of William Cannon near New Canton, VA (used to be named New Cannon because of Williams' land holdings along James across from Fluvanna Co. His home, Mt Ida is still standing. His wife (2nd- Eliz Cocke) died, he lost his home and went to TN and then KY where he died in 1819. He had two sons, John James and William. Know anything about this family? Mt. Ida is now owned by a Mrs. Jones and her son in New Canton. Hi, My name is April Kyle Bladh. My Robert KYLE (son of Robert of old Albemarle & Buckingham Cos., VA & Betty-possibly CAMPBELL, dau. of Hugh CAMPBELL the 2nd). My Robert KYLE jr. was born in 1739 in Tyrone Co.,Ireland and died 1820 in Hawkins Co.,TN. Capt. Robert (Rev. War soldier) md my Leah BROOKS (b.1747 Brunswick Co.,VA-d.1832 Hawkins Co.,TN). Leah was the sister to Castleton (killed by indians 1777 Washington Co.,VA), Littleton, Thomas, & George BROOKS (Rev. War soldiers who also ended up in TN or nearby in NC). The reason I think Leah & her brothers were born in Brunswick Co., VA is because that is what Leah's brother Littleton BROOKS' Rev. War pension record said he "was born near the Nottoway Bridge in Brunswick Co., VA". I found a Thos & Mary BROOKS in Brunswick Co.,VA at about the time Littleton was born. Thos was the son of John (d.1751 Brunswick) & Elizabeth BROOKS. I suspect that John was the son of John (d.1729 Surry Co.,VA) and that his mother was Mary ELDRIDGE, but this is a lot of speculation. There was a George BROOKS also that lived just across the Nottoway River who also had a son Thomas BROOKS. I know I'm not related to the Robert BROOKS of Brunswick Co., VA because he had a lot of money, property, and important in-laws. Therefore, it was probably the poor John, poor Thos. or his brother Wm BROOKS who were the parents of my Leah & her brothers. I suspect they moved from Brunswick to Charlottesville, VA and that is where my Leah & Capt. Robert Kyle were married. First they lived in Botetourt Co., VA, Washington Co., VA and then moved to Hawkins Co., TN where they are buried. I am seeking the children of their grandson Wiley Blount KYLE (b. 1795-d.1850 in either Franklin Co., Ala or Monroe Co., Mississippi and his wife Catherine CREED. Catherine CREED was b.1803 in Hawkins Co.,TN or Henry Co., VA, or Surry Co., NC. and she died 1868 in Monroe Co., Miss. Catherine's parents John CREED (died in TN, VA, or NC when Catherine was about 2 years old) and Rebecca __?__ (md 2nd to Cleon MOORE) had property in all 3 places. Wilie B. & Catherine Creed KYLE were supposed to have had 10 children born in Hawkins Co., TN yet I've only found 6--3 sons: Talbot (b.1819-d.1887 Monroe Co.,Miss md. to Charlotte MUNSON), my Felix KYLE (b.1829-d.1902 Hays Co.,TX md to Emma Burleson and my Martha KYSER), and Claiborne who died in 1857 in Hays Co.,TX at 20 years of age) and 3 daus.:Matilda (md __?__ Mc Afee), Mary Catherine (b.1828 Hawkins Co.,TN md 1850 in Monroe Co.,MS to John T. HUBBARD); and Eliza (b. 1832 md 1852 to Elijah Alexander MURPHY). (1) Who were their other 4 children of Wilie B. & Catherine Creed KYLE? (2) Who were the parents of Rebecca __?__ (no proof it was SMITH)? (3) Was my Wiley the illegimate son of Major John William KYLE (b.1777 VA- d.1823 Giles Co.,TN, son of Robert and Leah Brooks KYLE, md 1799 Grainger Co., TN to Rebecca YOUNG)? Can any one help me sort out my KYLES, BROOKS or can help me prove that Robert KYLE'S wife Betty was the daughter of Hugh CAMPBELL II? Linda Z. says <"...a William Banton (John B.) whatever that means..." In my ancestor's case, the names in parentheses were slaves. Best Wishes, Earl
Hi Jim, In the 1800 Tax List there is William Banton (John B.) whatever that means maybe his son or father. Also in 1810 Va. Census there is a Banton. I don't have the book here right now. I have 1810 and 1820 Census of Virginia as I have so many Ancestors from Va. Linda Z.
Dear Dot, In 1800 Tax List, there is Jesse, edward (estate), Charles, Jacob, John DUNCAN. There is a little paragraph of Joseph C. Duncan, of Buckingham Co. Va. was of Scottish descent. He married Nancy Maddox and settles in Christian Co. Ky. in 1817. In 1829 he went to Missouri and settled in Callaway Co. where he died in 1870. His wife died in 1860. If you want the rest, I will copy it and send it to you if you think it is your family. Give me your address if you want it. Linda Z There is one marriage Fleming Duncan married Martha Scruggs 17-Feb-1787. Pleasant Saunders, bondsman.
Hi I am just starting my research on my family from Buckingham. The names include William F. Johnson who married Elizabeth Massie early 1900's. I know some records may exist but they are very limited for African American's. Any help?
Marlene, I have Wests back in my line. They married into the Belks and Bilbreys in Overton Co. TN and go back into Virginia. I have several John West but none fit the wife and dates you sent. I do have Isaac West b. 1745 who married Susannah Anderson in Virginia around 1771, but the dates on their ch. are estimates so those dates could vary a little. This Isaac was son of William West b. 1724 and died 1808 in Chester Co. PA. Wm. West was son of John West 1690-1776 in England. I found lots of this West info. on Internet. Rich McCormick has lots on the Wests, that were my line. His dates and mine vary a little but it definitely is the same family. I can't find his address right now but you can probably do a WEST search and find his page. Then there is Guy Zimmerman's page: http://www.parsonstech.com/genealogy//TREES/GZIM/ZIMM.HTM He has Belks, West, Hughes and Chamberlain in VA and these are my line too. Hope you tie in with us. The double //up above before TREES is correct. I thought it was an error but it's not. Good luck. Please let me know if we connect. Will help if we do have same line. Ann in Wisconsin akunkel@badger.tds.net
Hi Jim, Will give you a thumbnail sketch of my Taylors. If we don't connect now, maybe will with a little more research: My grandma was Demaris Taylor 1872-1950 Overton Co. TN Her dad was Hezekiah "Carr" Taylor 1799 VA-aft. 1880 Overton Co. TN. He married: 1. Sally Giles in VA (or maybe Ellis-not sure yet) in 1818. He m. 2: Elizabeth_____in VA. They had big family of ch. He m. 3rd in Overton Co. TN to my grandma Margaret J. Richardson (@1840-1907 Overton TN. Had big family too. Hezekiah and his family were the children of: Edward Taylor (often listed as Edmund) abt 1765 VA (maybe Buckingham Co) and he died 1824, leaving will in Campbell Co. VA. His widow, Elizabeth "Betsy" may have been a Garrett (not sure) She died in Sumner Co. TN in 1838. Other siblings of my Hezekiah listed on their father's will: Sons Pleasant, Chesley, David. Daughters: Spicey and Massey who married Pryors, William and John (brothers, cousins???) single sisters were Polly, Jane and Elizabeth Jr. Hezekiah wound up in Overton Co. TN as did his sister Spicey and Wm. Pryor. The other children were in Sumner Co. with their mother in the 1830's (some in White Co. TN before that). Now here's another puzzle: There is a Rev. soldier, Thomas Taylor who was the son of Samuel Taylor and his wife, Sophia Childres. Thomas married Milla Markham. Some of their children lived near my Edward's children in Sumner Co. TN. Their names were also Pleasant and David and many researchers, including me, have the same two listed under Edward's line and also Thomas line. Not sure how to find out whose children they are for sure.... I have a terrible time trying to get Southern material here in Wisconsin. I go to the Historical Society 3 or 4 times a year (4 hr drive each way) but there is only so much you can find in couple days. The Internet has been wonderful and I do believe with each of us on these trails we will gradually piece it all together. The fact that these Taylors were in Buckingham and Campbell and Cumberland (and prob. Bedford) and then wound up together in Sumner, they had to be cousins! I have a researcher who has studied the "older" Taylors for years and he is on a search for me too, so lets keep at it. Isn't it a thrill when someone names a child a really different unique name that jumps off the pages at you? Like Hezekiah, Chesley, Hepsibah or Theopholis??? Sure beats, Thomas and David, right??? Thanks for writing and I will gladly share what I have on Family Tree Maker but am real new at the Net and "real computer dumb" as far as sending big quantities of facts. Don't know yet how to send (OR receive) large attachments. Have had trouble with those and got bumped off the Internet and had to reinstall twice, by trying. so bear with me. I'm jealous-you are in VA and I want so bad to go there and see it. My brother, while in the Navy, said the Shenandoah Valley of VA was the prettiest place he'd ever been. At that time, he didn't know our family started out there (Easterly line). Please keep in touch. Ann Duncan Kunkel, N12911 Resewood Ave. Greenwood, WI 54437 or akunkel@badger.tds.net PS, Jim, did you come across Delores Ellis in your Taylor hunting. She emailed me about my Taylor/Garrett/Ellis and I lost her email address. Trying to find her. Let me know if I can help you further.
