    3. Hello, Looking for information on the Matthews family of Buckingham CO. Maria A. E. Davis married John Matthews in about 1828. She was the dau. of Zachariah Davis. Family lore says that John Matthews was a slaveholder, and that he was killed by one of his slaves in 1829. The plantation was then sold and Maria and her newborn daughter left for the West with her father and siblings. Does this sound familiar to anyone on this list? We can account for Maria Matthews(Mathis) from 1838 in West Virginia (VA) until her death in Nebraska in 1877, but would like any information on John Matthews family, the name of plantation, any circumstances surrounding the death of John. John also had two brothers, we believe, Thomas and Anderson. Any help appreciated. Thank you. Phyllis Piccini

    2. Fred Hof
    3. My wife Brenda (birth name Cobb) is a direct descendent of Robert Bolling (ca. 1795-1870), son of Lenaeus Bolling and grandson of Col. Robert Bolling of Chellowe. We've pretty much fleshed out the family history over the past couple of years, but one big mystery remains. Robert Bolling's fourth (and final) wife, the mother of Susan Peyton Bolling (my wife's great-grandmother) was someone named "Frances" according to the 1850 census. Brenda and I have seen her name in only one other place: the 1879 Buckingham register recording the marriage of Susan P. Bolling and Henry L. Cobb(s). On that register the mother of the bride is listed as "Frances P. Bolling." We've been going on the hunch that Frances was born Frances Peyton, but we've found nothing. She appears in no census after 1850; perhaps she died in childbirth when Susan Bolling was born in 1851. Anyone know who Frances was? Any ideas on how we might find out? Thanks! 1. [VABUCKIN-L] Duncan's Store and the Duncan Family in Cumberland/Buckingham Cos.
    2. Hello everyone, I'm relatively new to this list and wondered if someone could tell me the vintage (time frame) of the town designated as Duncan's Store in Cumberland Co, Va.? I have a map which indicates it on Duncan's Store Road which appears to run from the town to a point in Buckingham County (anyone know the terminus of this road?) Reason for my request: I am trying to discover the parents of one Charles Duncan, b. 1775 (VA) and his wife, Nancy Ford (b. 1775, Va.). One source indicates that Charles' father is one Jacob Duncan from Buckingham Co. I have not found any information which confirms or denies this presumption. Charles is found in Burke Co, NC in 1818 with the birth of his youngest son, William McCandree Duncan. Does the name McCandree mean anything in Cumberland or Buckingham Co? He then moves through Buncombe Co, NC, through Macon Co, NC (1820's-1833) and finally settles in Union Co, GA (1833). With the large number of Duncans in the late 1700's, many of whom are named Charles, I had hoped that someone would recognize his wife's surname or the middle name of William to help place this Charles with his proper parents. Would appreciate any and all clues, hypotheses, information, etc. anyone would care to share. Sincerely, Dot Wilson Duncan Tampa, Florida
