    1. [VABUCKIN-L] Hardiman-hardeman-hardyman
    2. Just now subscribed. For a number of years have been attempting to verify or document the parents of my gg-grandfather,William Hardeman or Hardiman or Hardyman, born Buckingham, Va abt 1826. Am sure this William's grandfather was John Hardiman born abt 1738, married abt 1757 died Buckingham 1823, unsure of his wife, possibly was a Baldwin. This John Hardyman had 11 known children, Richard,John,William, Littleberry, Ana, Thomas, Uriah, Samuel B., Charles, George Washington and Elizabeth. One of these sons of John was the father of my William Hardeman Believe his parents were the above Samuel B. and Rebecca Garrett or Garrott. Know my gg-grandfather's brothers and sister were, Charles Garrett, John, Samuel G., Susan,(my William) and George Washington. My gg-grandfather, William moved to Fleming Co.,Kentucky in the 1840's and a number of the brothers moved to other Ky Counties about the same time. I have full knowledge of William, his Kentucky marriage, his children and his descendants and have compiled family history of it. Now am attempting to go into his ancestory but am reluctant to publish my beliefs without some verification of his parentage. Will accept reply of either personal knowledge or documented knowledge from Wills, Deeds, etc. I will also be glad to share our researched knowledge of William's descendants, his brothers and sister, his grandparents and great grandparents.

    1. Re: [VABUCKIN-L] Boaz
    2. Dear Sir I think you mean Bent Creek that flows into the James River. Each year they have a Batteau Festival at Bent Creek that honors the men and people that carried tobacco down the James River from Madison Heights, VA also know as Hog Head during this period. Named from the large containers of tobacco that was loaded outside of Lynchburg, VA and floated down the James River to Richmond, VA. The towns down the James River were Brightswell Mill, Galts Mill, Riverville, Allens Creek, (Bent Creek know as Diguidsville,) Norwood, Winginia, Howardsville, Scottsville, and etc. right on down to Richmond, VA. The town of Diguidsville was laid out by Thomas Jefferson and there was a mill located there and a Chapel Know as Rose' Chapel. Later the name was changed to Bent Creek. There is a Book written by Dr. Catherine Seaman, past professor of Sweet Briar College , Sweet Briar Va. on this area. Bent Creek had the first Masonic Lodge located there in Buckingham County. There was also a Post Office located there that served Buckingham County. Hope this mighty answer some of your questions. I know a little about this area as I own a home located across from Bent Creek in a small town of Gladstone, VA. Route 60 crosses the James River at Bent Creek, Va. There is nothing there but a cross roads. They are building a new state park just down the James River at Bent Creek. Hve a nice Day. Charles W. Brown

    2. I'm a new subscriber to this list and am looking for personal information about my direct ancestor, Archibald Boaz (1739-1813), who lived in western Buckingham County from around 1786 to 1791. On Nov. 7, 1791, he signed a petition asking the Gen. Assembly to establish a tobacco inspection station and warehouse at Bent Creek where it flowed into the Fluvanna River. A year later he signed another petition asking to have a town established there. Is anything still at that location? In April, 1785 he was tried for and acquitted of murder (a duel?). His wife's name might have been May, last name unknown. Any information about these would be greatly appreciated. Thomas Boaz

    1. Re: [VABUCKIN-L] TALLEY ---------WADE
    2. Ruby: I am not possitive which line CHARLES TALLEY of Buckingham takes back. After many years of studying the records and other information I can find, my best guess is that he is the son of NICHOLS TALLEY whose will was recorded in Hanover Co., Va in 1787 naming sons Charles and Dibdal and daughters Judith and Alice. However due to the lack of Buckingham records available I do not find adequate records to make this connection. I do think CHARLES TALLEY, ZACKARIAH TALLEY of Sumner Co/Cumberland Co, Va and DAVID TALLEY are most likey cousins and distantly related. Would like to know your opinion. Gene

    2. In a message dated 98-08-29 17:01:33 EDT, you write: << I think we used to communicate back in the 80s. How are you getting along? >> Yes, we certainly did. You are Gene Talley from Bartlett, TN, right? Thanks for the information. I appreciate it. I am doing fine, still hunting for TALLEYs. I do not descend from Charles but I still am trying to find out if he ties into my Louisa or Cumberland or Fluvanna Co TALLEYs. They were all around, so close to Buckingham. Thanks again, Ruby Talley Smith

    2. Fred Hof
    3. My wife Brenda (nee Cobb) and I are researching her family's roots in Buckingham. Brenda is the daughter of Bolling Cobb (b. 1922 Buckingham, d. 1991 Lynchburg); gd of John Robert Cobb(s) (1884-1934, b. & d. in Buckingham); ggd of Henry Legare Cobbs (1853-1884, b. & d. in Buckingham); gggd of John W. Cobbs (1822-1879), b. & d. in Buckingham; and (we think) ggggd of John Cobbs, Sr. (b. ca 1793, d. 1860s?) If anyone's done some research into this particular family, we're very interested in (1) establishing whether or not John W. Cobbs was actually the son of John Cobbs, Sr.; (2) if he was, then who were the parents, etc. of John Cobbs, Sr.; (3) whether the names "Cobb" and "Cobbs" were interchangeable or when exactly (and why) the "s" was dropped; and (4) the birth names of Sarah A. Cobbs (wife of John W.) and Nancy F. Cobbs, wife of John, Sr. We have already reviewed the 1810-1870 census records and Buckingham Burials Vol. I. Thanks very much. Fred Hof
