    1. [VABUCKIN-L] Allens of Buckingham Co.
    2. I am a recent (about 2 weeks) subscriber of the VABUCKIN-L list. I saw your note re Stanton, etc., and referencing your book re Lost Marriages of Buckingham. I am having trouble finding or confirming my great grandfather's parents. My grandfather was Noel Jackson Allen (1869-1943) m. Naomi Byrd Brown. He was born and died in Buckingham Co. His father was Simeon Allen (1823?-1910?) m. Martha Frances Dunevant. Notes from great aunts say the Simeon descended from Capt. Richard Allen. I have lots of information on Richard, but I haven't been able to establish Simeon's parents. Do you have any insight? And, especially, if you authored the book on Lost Marriages, where could I buy it? Thank you, Noel Allen

    3. Hi, Does anyone on the list recognize these names? My ancestor, Keziah McAshan/McShan/Mackshane, etc, born 1775, Buckingham Co. Va. Her parents were Nehemiah MCAshan and Keziah Chambers, daughter of William Chambers and his wife, possibly Elizabeth Watkins, all of Buckingham Co. Va. Keziah married (1) ____ Anderson and (2) _____ Steadby. I don't have their first names. She married (3) John Moore, son of Robert Moore and Elizabeth Ashcraft, about 1804. I don't know where John Moore or his parents came from. It could have been Buckingham or somewhere else. Are any of these marriages listed in the birth and marriage book of Buckingham? The McAshan-Moore family is given at these URLS: http://www.monmouth.com/~princef/bible-01.html http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/p/r/i/William-L-Prince/index.html Thanks, Thelma Prince

    2. John Snoddy
    3. I've ordered a book on Buckingham County cemeteries and I'm hoping it will provide the location of the Snoddy family plot. I have a note written by Thomas Bransford who visited the Snoddy homestead in 1858. The tombstones for some of my early ancestors were there at that time & if they are still there, I hope to find them. If I do, I'll make any pictures I take available to any/all interested people. I've also ordered a book called Genealogical Records of Buckingham County. Both are from www.hearthstonebooks.com . They have close to 20 books on Buckingham County and eventually I hope to have them all. If any of you have experience with these books, I would appreciate your comments. There are census records for 1850, 1860 and 1870. Books of marriage records, land tax summaries and implied deeds. (Anyone know hat an "implied" deed is?) John Snoddy

The Petition of the Inhabitants of the County of Buckingham, Humbly Sheweth -- That during the Continuance of the late Iniquitous and therefore Justly exploded establishment of the Church of England, all Denominations of Christians were Taxed for its particular Emoluments, whereby the Clergy were not only furnished with Annual Salaries, but large sums have been apropriated to the purchasing of Gleebe [sic] Lands, Parsonage Houses, Churches, Vestments, Plate, etc. for the use of the said Church, that if it be unjust that one denomination of Christians be taxed for the Support of those who are of a different Persuasion in matters of Religion, as even the interested and the Bigoted (such is the force of Evidence) do Acknowledge; it is doub[t]less equally unjust to detain and Continue to Misapply what the Rapacious hand of Oppression has wrested from the Rightufl Proprietor for the like purposes, that your Petitioners conceive the Act for Incorporating the Protestant Episcopal Church which disposes of the property of every Denomination of Christians in the Common Wealth Indiscriminately to the use and the Benefit of the Episcopalians without the Publich Approbation and Consent is unjust for the above Reasons.-- Your Petitioners therefore move your Honourable House that the Premises may be taken into Mature Consideration and that order may be taken for the deposal of the above described Property the money arising from which to remain in each county to discharge the Parish and County levies. [This petition is signed by many people including Wm. WODMORE] Another petition regarding the Church and holding property, dated Oct 17, 1787 is signed by Wm. WADMORE Another petition same wording as for the petition above, but dated Nov 15, 1794 is signed by Wm. WADMORE That's all I can find on your family line. Judy

    3. Steamboat Days on the Cumberland ~ Honoring Livingston County on Its 175 Anniversary Published by The Livingston Ledger, Smithland, KY [1974] Old Livingston County 1630-1830 by Kathleen H. Henderson, Feature Writer for Magee Newspapers Page 20 ~ Possibly no more unlikely looking candidates could be found to be pioneers than Dr. Charles L. LEWIS and his wife, Lucy JEFFERSON LEWIS, who was a sister of President Thomas JEFFERSON. They were first cousins. Dr. Charles L. LEWIS was also a cousin of Meriwether LEWIS of the LEWIS & CLARK Expedition. Meriwether LEWIS also served as a secretary to Thomas JEFFERSON. But Dr. LEWIS and his wife, Lucy, came to Livingston County [Kentucky] and lived at the Gower House until their new home was built on the Cumberland [River] not to far from what is now Smithland [KY]. This home was named Rocky Hill. In 1811, one of the LEWIS's son, Randolph, died from a snake bite. Lucy herself died in 1811. Her memorial marker is across the Cumberland [River] from Smithland [KY], in the same little park with the marker for Lt. Col. John MONTGOMERY. Isham and Lilburn LEWIS in 1812 beheaded a Negro slave named, George. Their story is well-known locally that it will be only briefly presented here. Lilburn's second wife was Lelita RUTTER. Lilburn shot himself over his mother's grave as the sheriff's party came to arrest him. After Lucy LEWIS' death, Dr. LEWIS returned to Albermarle Co., VA, the home county of the LEWIS, JEFFERSON and CLARK families. An old book, "The Wedgewood Pitcher" tells this story, for legend says the slave was killed for breaking a cut glass pitcher... 04 Oct 1998 ~ 2pm Bob, I know this isn't exactly what you asked for, but I found the story interesting.
