Mary, In the book "Buckingham Burials, Vol. 1" I find Stephen Farmer buried in the "Farmer Family Cemetery. He is the only one there. The inscription says Stephen served in "CO E, 20 Va. Inf., C. S. A. " There is a notation that there are others buried in this cemetery and some of the graves are marked with field stones and some are unmarked. It says the cemetery is located on Highway 60-690. Stephen's is the only tombstone. Hope this helps. Alicegayle@aol.com
Is Doling another possible spelling? A Jarred DOLING worked for Thomas Mathews in 1789 according to "Genealogical Records of Buckingham Co. Va.". Good Luck!
Hello, This is my first post. Does anyone on this list have a connection to or any information on William WRIGHT, born 1795 in Buckingham Cnty, who married Sarah "Sally" Dorcas DILLS on April 6, 1812. Some records say they were married in Green County. But at least one of their children is listed as having been born in VA, so I don't know if they returned home for the birth of the children or whatever. They lived together until in Green County he died on A[pril 30, 1868. On the last census in 1860, I find them living with Nancy Taylor, 13. Anyone? They had many children, Pernila (1813) Elizabeth (1814), Eliza Ann (1815), John Francis (1819), James Henry (1826), William C (1827), Martha Ann 1831)
There is a church and graveyard off Route 60 Road 690 between Sprouses Corner and Buckingham Court House. Would anyone out there know the name of the Church. A telephone number would be appreciated also. I am searching for the grave of Stephen Farmer. Thank you, Mary Farmer
Looking for info on a Jarrod Dolin who was married to a Judea?? would like to find any info.....They had a son named John B. Dolin who went to Boone co Wv. Thanks Tracy
JeanRose - Please put me on your list of people to help with "look ups" in your Buckingham County Books. I am nearly at a dead end on my research re my father's Buckingham County family - Allens. I have not been able to establish my great grandfather's parents. My grandfather was Noel Jackson Allen (b. 1860, d. 1943, in Buckingham County). His father, my great grandfather, was Simeon Allen (b. 1823?, d. 1910) m. Martha Frances Dunevant. Family tradition and notes from great aunts indicate Simeon was descended from or a nephew of Cap. Richard Allen of Cumberland. I have lots of information about Richard, including that he had a son named Simeon, but Richard would have been about 84 when Simeon was born, so I believe I am missing a link. David, Richard's brother?, lived in Halifax, and in the 1850 census shows a Simeon of about 30 years old living in his household, but I have nothing tangible to connect him. I shall buy some of the Buckingham books, but I don't know where to begin. When you have the time, I would greatly appreciate a "look up!" If there is anyone else on the VABUCKIN-L list who has ideas or info, please let me know. I have lots of information downward from Simeon and Martha if you are interested. Many thanks, Noel Allen

I have relatives that I am trying to piece together in Buckingham County. My family lines that I am researching are AGEE, GARRETTS, STANTON, LOGAN, & SCRUGGS. I have tons of information about the STANTONs and I am desperately seeking information about the LOGANs. My GG-grandparents were Ann (?) and Robert Logan...children were Aros, Charles, Milton and (? daughter's name escapes me right now.) I found them on the 1900 Census and can't locate them after that time. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Beverly Mullens-Jefferson

Hi to the list and Mary I have not had the chance to review the new cemetary book - but I would think from the appearance of those stones, that would have been where I would have started my database<bg>. I also might not have the correct name of the cemetary - but it is in Arvonia and a well kept one, and seems to be just about "full". I think I remember a church across the road from it, but my memory has never been good! I know how to determine if this cemetary is included. There is a burial there for Thomas Abraham Poe and Laura Johnson Poe (husband & wife) don't have their dates. These are the g-g-parents of my husbands's daughter. I don't have them in my database yet. Alice in Fluvanna
Thanks to everyone for being so generous with their knowledge of old Buckingham County and her Welsh settlers. I learned enough to be conversant about my clan moving from mountain top to mountain top across the USA. Jerry Nathan Rice, Spring, Texas
Researching the Judith Coleman (mother Frances "Fanny" Wheeler) and George W. Edgar family. Looking for son George Edgar, born about 1845 in Cumberland County, VA and Elizabeth Frances Edgar, born abt 1849 in Cumberland, County. Elizabeth married John W. Ayres 9 Jan 1870. Robert H. Edgar married Mary E. Dunford 12 June 1872. Anyone researcing these families? I have most of the Wheeler families that lived in Buckingham and Cumberland Counties if anyone is interested. rwheeler@itctel.com http://www.itctel.com/~rwheeler/wheeler.htm
Thanks Randy - figured you knew more about this!!! Alice in Fluvanna

Do you (or anyone on the list) know more about the slate industry in Buckingham County? My grandfather left Buckingham in 1888 at the age of 16 to work in the slate industry of Northeastern PA. The quarries in PA were paying premium wages and the industry there was booming. I'm curious as to why this wasn't the case in Buckingham. -----Original Message----- From: Caddowens@aol.com <Caddowens@aol.com> To: VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com <VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, October 13, 1998 3:38 PM Subject: [VABUCKIN-L] Buckingham and the Welsh >Hi to the list > >I hope someone with more knowledge of this subject will elaborate on this - >but in response to why Buckingham - there are slate quarries and I was told >the Welsh were wonderful carvers, I don't know what else they did, but the >tombstones in Arvonia in the Arvonia Cemetery are a wonderful testament to >their workmanship. I've been on your list for so long, I can't remember how to subcribe. A friend of mine is interested in coming on board and I need to let her know. Elizabeth Nuckols Lee
An excellent source for those wanting to know more about the people migrating to Virginia is "Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America," by David Hackett Fischer. Got my copy at Barnes and Noble. Chart on p. 238 shows that many of the emigrees were from Wales. Also, "After 1650, Bristol became more important in Virginia's servant trade. The great majority of emigrants from Bristol (87% in one sample) came from the west of England and South Wales. The most important place of origin was the Severn Valley." >From what I understand slate mining was a major industry in Buckingham County at one time it was and is used in the roofing industry. If you scan through the census records you will see occupation listed as slater, many of them from Whales and England. It was readily available and they found one of its uses as headstones and currently as signage welcoming you to Buckingham County, much in the same way as granite is used in areas of Georgia. Buckingham's slate was used for school blackboards, mantles, flagging, etc. Slate from Buckingham was of the finest quality and found in its greatest abundance along the Slate River, not far from the James River. One of the interesting occupations in Buckingham at one time was gold mining and before the California gold rush Buckingham was know for it production of gold. among the most noted gold producing mines were the Buckingham, Loudoun, Lightfoot, Bumpass, Ford, Hobson, Ayres, and Duncan or Apperson mines. A rich vein of gold was opened at the Ford mine in 1835, but at no great depth it was found to run into copper pyrites, a valuable ore but considered useless at that time, its presence added so much cost to obtaining the gold the mine was abandoned. The Lightfoot mine, near the Ford mine and probably on the same vane is one of the oldest and was the most valuable gold mine in the State.
