I have been on this list for quite a long time and posted several times regarding my William WRIGHT and Sarah "Sally" DILLS. In all this time, there has never been a response to anyone searching for the same names, anyone having seen them in any of those many reference books or any reponse whatsoever. Should I leave the list since I there has been no response? Stay and keep posting every once in a while? look in another direction? Suggestions welcome. Thanks Ruth LOOKING FOR William Wright and Sarah Dills who were born in Buckingham County in 1975, married and moved to Green County, KY where they lived together 50 years.
I understand that there was once an Episcopal Church in Curdsville, St. Peter's I think, and that the building is still standing and being used as a community center. Between about 1925 and 1932, there was a Dr. Lacey who came from Richmond to preach at this church on every 5th Sunday I'm told. I'd like to locate some information on this Dr. Lacey. My father was reportedly named for him. Anyone with info? Thanks in advance. Gary Phaup
Jean - Further to your note about Simeon's endeavors in 1865, I have his sword. It's US issued, but from what I've read that was not unusual. The hilt has the names of his comrades scratched in. Again, thanks for the info. Regards, Noel
Jean - Thanks for your reply. I look forward to receiving the snail-mail materials. I have wondered if Richard's son, Simeon, was my ggf's father, but I have not found any record of any children for Richard's son, Simeon. Thanks for your help! Best Regards, Noel
Hi Noel: I'll be glad to snailmail you a copy of the V3. bit. Just cause I'm a good kid, I'll also mail you copies of all the Allens from V.1 & 2 as well. Some of them could be the ancestors of Simeon. Perhaps your Simeon was a JR. that would explain the date question, or possibly, at the 1865 date, he was off fighting those dastardly Yankees in the Civil War...that seems the most likely scenario. Anyway I' try to get those copies off to you today. Jean
James Granderson NEWTON b 1893 married Rosa Adelaid O'BRYANT. They are both buried at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Buckingham Co, VA. Does anyone know Rosa Adelaid's parents? They had a daughter who married Roy EMERT and one who married Ernest SHUMAKER. Does anyone know these daughter's first names and anything else about this family. Thanks, Ruby Talley Smith
Jean - Thanks for the excellent "tidbit" from "Land Tax Summaries." A couple of interesting facts put this in a different light. First, Simeon and Martha married around 1860, continued having children until 1880 or so. Martha was a "Dunevant" although I have seen various different spellings, including Dunnivant. I wonder if the trustee had to act in her behalf because of some other restriction. Perhaps Simeon, who was in the Civil War, was away, captured, disabled, or disqualified to buy land? I have a photo of him from around 1900, so we know he showed up again. Any chance you could snail mail a copy of v3 p. 7? Noel Allen P.O. Drawer 1270 Raleigh, NC 27602 I shall gladly reimburse any costs. Thanks for this and any additional thoughts! Best Regards, Noel
Hi Noel: Iam sure I have that census somewhere, but it doesn"t come to hand right now. I'll search it for Simeon when I find it. Meantime here is a tidbit for ya...from "Land Tax Summaries & Implied Deeds" v3 p. 7: Allen, Martha T/F?. 1865 - her trustee William H. Dunnivant bought 151-3/4Acres from William S. Wise. [this is surely Simeon's widow] There are some other Allens listed, but none that seem to be related. Hope this helps. Jean

Don't have the specific records, but I believe that Davis Osborne/Osburn may be related to a Branch Osborne of Nodaway Co., a son if I recall - a Sarah Osborne married Henry Davis in Nottaway County, daughter of Branch, I believe, Henry P. Davis, son of Samuel Henry Davis and Elizabeth Spencerdaughter of Sharp Spencer and Sarah Anderson ( all of Prince Edward Co,), Sarah Anderson was a sister, daughter or ward of James and Francis Anderson of Buckingham. So many names seem a coincidence it might be worth checking. -----Original Message----- From: church of Christ, SE <cochrist@itctel.com> To: VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com <VABUCKIN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, October 25, 1998 2:08 PM Subject: [VABUCKIN-L] Dunford-Osborne-Barker-Chenault-Boatwright-Wheeler >Looking for descendants of Charles D. Thank you very much. I have that book, also several other Buckingham Books. The Cemetary book didn't have any of my TAYLORS. Jordan's brother-in-law Henry Miles was in War of 1812 and his Sister's husband in War of 1812, last name Sudsbury. I have never seen this name anywhere. On tax records James Taylor was called Captain. There were three Jame Taylors there at the same time. One was James Taylor Jr. Now I have told you more that you wanted to know. about Taylors . Thanks again. Linda Z.
Hi everybody! A few weeks ago I posted my search for my great grandfather's parents. GGF was Simeon Allen (b. 1823? d. 1910), married Martha Frances Dunevant. By 1853 Simeon was living in Buckingham County near Enonville. Oral tradition his him as descendent of Capt. Richard Allen. Richard had a son, David, who petitioned (unsucessfully) as Richard's heir for the Rev. war pension. A David Allen is shown in the 1850 Halifax County census as having a Simeon of 30 years of age living in his household as of 1850. Can anybody help fill in the gap? If there's an 1850 census of Buckinham that shows Simeon was not yet in Buckingham, even that would help. An added note: I have a piece of blue/white cloth called by my great aunt as an "family cloth" to be passed down generation to generation. There's a lot of oral history associated with it. Any matches out there? Thanks, Noel

I noticed in Census some of my Taylors lived in New Canton and others lived in Maysville,Buckingham Co. Va. Can anyone tell me about New Canton? Was it on the James River? Thanks (trying to find descendants of James b. 1770's died 1847 and his son Jordan Taylor who lived there in Maysville 100 years. Linda Z.
The following is taken from a book by Emily Maxey Jenkins called "Memoirs of Buckingham". NEW CANTON This village is located in the northern part of the county, 63 miles west of Richmond, and situated on the mouth of Slate Creek, on an elevated bank about a fourth of a mile from the James River, commanding a beautiful perspective view down the river. As early as 1836 the village was described as rapidly declining. It was once a place of considerable trade. At this time it contained 36 dwelling houses, 3 mercantile stores, one tavern, one flour mill, one tanyard, and one saddler. There was one attorney and one physician in 1836. The population was 50. A Free house of worship was situated a mile south of New Canton, and four miles west the Virginia Mills, which manufactured large quantities of flour. On the Slate River, several slate quarries were opened during the early 1800s. An iron foundry was opened in New Canton about the same time. Immediately on the Slate River the country is hilly, but soon becomes very level. The borders of the river are very fertile, but the level country beyound the hills was extremely sterile, except for the flats of the creeks. Ruby Talley Smith
