Posted on: Buckingham County, Va Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Va/Buckingham/11142 Surname: MOSELEY, MILLER, GUERRANT, JONES ------------------------- Hello Margaret, it appears that your great x3 grandmother and my great x 2 grandmother were sisters! My gg grandmother Elizabeth Moseley married William F. Miller in Buckingham Co VA around 1830. They moved with their two eldest daughters Mary Ellis Miller and Lucy Lou Miller to Springhill Livingston Co MO around 1841. Letitia's brother James S. Moseley and his bride Eliza Jones accompanied them, and the two families lived close by each other for many years. (I am wondering if Eliza Jones is related to Peter Rhodes Jones, Letitia's husband). James and Eliza are both buried in Springhill MO; we suspect that William F. Miller and Elizabeth Moseley Miller are buried in Chillicothe MO, as that is where they lived during their latter years. I have quite alot of info on Elizabeth and William's family in Springhill MO, including transcriptions of about 25 Civil War era letters. ( Unfortunately, she does not mention her sister Letitia Victoria in any of the letters.). Elizabeth Moseley DID name one of her daughters Letitia, but I have not been able to trace Letitia Miller's whereabouts after the Civil War. Please check out my website at http://www.fidalgo.net/~tartas/index.html Click on Mother's line.. I have tons of info on the Moseleys, Millers, Guerrants, etc. I am curious about the Huguenot society that you mentioned--my mother's maiden name was Martine--another large Huguenot family that settled in NY. Also where in Texas did Letitia Victoria Moseley and Peter Rhodes Jones live?? Yours, Betty Tartas in WA state

I've juist caught your msg ref Bondurant of January. Aunt "Marcie/Marchie" was great aunt to my husband, I believe that was the relationship. We pondered long about the "Bondurant" middle name and could come to no good reason for it other than the usual - that of a prominant name well known. AS well as we know, there was no relationship of Aunt Marcie to the Bondurants. (Yes, we know "Marcie" is only the way the smaller children in the family pronounced it.) Walker. Leila Eldridge D'Aiutolo, a cousin of mine, has entered much of the Eldridge genealogy at www.familysearch.org. If either of those Rolfes are the one you're looking for, you can find lots of info there. Also, both of those Rolfes are in the book "Descendents of Pocohontas" if you can find it in a library somewhere. Actually, there are probably many more Rolfe Eldridges at the familysearch web site. Those are just the two who were direct ancestors of mine. There are a number of cousins and descendents of these two in other lines named Rolfe Eldridge. Hope its a match! :) ann

I am new to the listserve so I thought I'd let you know who I am researching. My ggrandfather was Jonas Wright who was married first to Mattie davis and then to Alice Poulston Steeger. My grandmother was Landonna Burke Wright who married Frank Clark Conkle. I am researching the Wrights, Huddlestons, Meadors, Flippen, Stratton, Johns, Scott and Hudgins. Right now I am looking for info on Seymour Smith Wright who first was married to a Banton who died during the 1919-20 Flu epidemic and then married a McFadden. His children were William James, John, Walter and Ruby. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Joe Conkle

John Eldridge was my Uncle and was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, the son of John Eldridge and Lillian Moorman Spencer Eldridge. In 1927 he graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy and trained as a pilot on the converted German cruiser that was made into the aircraft carrier Langley, flying bi-planes. He did test pilot work with the Dauntless Devistator dive bomber, crashing twice. When WW II broke out he was on the carrier Wasp in the North Atlantic commanding the 71st Wing as Lt. Commander under Squadron Commander Snowden. Their first mission was the ferrying of planes to the Island of Malta. After the Battle of the Coral Sea, one carrier was sunk and one badly damaged; therefore, the Carriers Hornet and Wasp were transferred to the Pacific to support the Marine landing in August of 1942 on Guadalcanal. During the operations the carrier Wasp was sunk while Eldridge's 71st squadron was in the air. They landed on the Hornet to refuel and rearm; there was no room on the carrier for their planes so they could stay but their planes would be pushed over the side or they could join the Marine air wing on the captured Japanese airfield renamed Henderson Field. Lt. Cmdt. Eldridge chose to take his planes to fight on and continued to do so through October. Twice Eldridge was shot down but returned through the Japanese lines with the help of natives and Coast Watchers. In late October, Eldridge received orders to return to the States to take over training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, the primary naval training area, but word came that under the cover of a storm a large Japanese task force of troopships and escorts was coming down the slot to land Re-enforcements. Cmdt. Eldridge took up a flight of volunteers to intercept the task force. He was credited with sinking a cruiser and breaking up the convoy; however, all planes were lost. His body was never recovered, but his bullet riddled plane and the body of his gunner were found in shallow water. Lt. Cmdt. Eldridge posthumously received the Navy Flying Cross, the second highest decoration to the Congressional Medal of Honor. Also the destroyer escort was named for him. More information is available in "The Lonely Vigil," "The Cactus Air Force," "The History of the Marine Air Force in WWII," and "The U.S. Naval History of WW II." Sincerely yours, Frank M. Eldridge
HI All , I have been meaning to do this for some time and just never made the time..last night I decided to get at least some of it together.. I am not sure how many on the list know to what extent the really old newspapers of Va. have been preserved ..I know I did not until I found death of ggggrandfather in newspaper...ironically in the same paper on the front page was a suit naming him and others in Buckingham Co...there were several suits that had to be posted in Richmond paper...the names I am sending today were what I could read from the front page of the ViriginIA Argus..published in April of 1807. I thought I would at least send the names as someone just might be looking for these folks. Court record FEb. court 1807 JOHN WESLEY GREEN, ELIZABETH GREEN, HENRY GREEN infant , all children and legal representives of GREENBERRY GREEN deceased against CARONHAPPOCK(this was a first name :) CHANDLER, widow and relict of ISSAC CHANDLER deceased,AGNES CHANDLER, SUSANNA CHANDLER, ISSAC CHANDLER,THOMAS CHANDLER,PATSY CHANDLER, and CARONHAPPOCK(THAT NAME AGAIN) CHANDLER, children and legal representives of ISSAC CHANDLER deceased....in suit it mentions that the CHANDLER group are no longer inhabitants of the Commonwealth. The WILLIAMSON group were no longer living in the Commonwealth (thus the notice in paper) There was also another column on the front page but I only could read a little bit of it..will look to see if I have better copy...THOMAS WRIGHT JR. was the only name I could make out...the only reason I knew it was Buckingham was that R. ELDRIDGE JR. registered it as Deputy Clerk as he had done the others. Hope this helps someone...I will check the few other copies of papers (different ones) that I have and see what other names might be there. Mary BUCKINGHAM COUNTY NAMES: IRVINE/IRVING, LEWIS, PAYNE

If any subscribers happen to be attending NAACL 2001 as well, let me know off list. [If anybody would like to know just what this is, the link is http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~ref/naacl2001.html]. If anybody needs help with their subscription, I will possibly be able to help you during the week if I get access to e-mail at the conference; otherwise Thursday evening (assuming the upgrades to my computer will be done by then) or Sunday evening will be the soonest I can help you. Each list that I admin has a matching mailing list webpage with fairly complete instructions for unsubscribing and changing your subscription options if anybody needs to look at them. They are all linked from the following page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/ If you have never checked out the page that goes with the list you are subscribed to, why not take a moment and take a peak? Some of them have some fairly substantial pointers to online resources that you might find helpful in your research. For those that don't, maybe you subscribers can help me build some good links. No need to wait until I return to send suggestions. -- Wishing all a pleasant relaxing weekend and a good week to come, Mary Taffet [email protected]
