Farmville is your best, closest bet. They have several hotels and only 20 mins. from Buckingham. Also, Longwood College (in Farmville) has all the back issues of the Farmville Herald newspaper, which was the local paper for Buckingham and surrounding areas. It is on microfilm, in the library. Hello subscribers, About a week and a half ago, we started a vote to see if subscribers of VABUCKIN wanted to keep the gateway open or close the gateway; the gateway refers to the messages sent automatically from the message board to the mailing list. While we did not get as many votes as I had hoped for, we did get 22 votes, with 14 for keeping the gateway open and 8 for closing it. So, for now, the gateway will remain open. -- Mary Taffet List Admin for VABUCKIN [email protected]

Susan, In May I spent a week in the Buckingham area. I stayed at the Budget Inn in Appomattox. It was the most reasonably priced around, clean and well located. The people who ran the place were very friendly and helpful. There is a great mom & pop restaurant in Appomattox on the same street as the Library. The food is wonderful and the prices can't be beat. It is easy to get around to the different countys. Be sure you go to Jones Library. It is a MUST. It is closed on Sunday and Monday. Enjoy, Mary Kanta <[email protected]>
Susan, What about the lodging in Fork Union? They have a motel there, and one of the best home cooking restaurants around. Theresa Richmond, VA
Susan, No one answered your query, so I will give my opinion. There are few places of lodging in Buckingham County. The major motel is at at Sprouses Corner near Dillwyn (intersection of US Routes 60 and 15). It is very overpriced for what they offer, not a bargain. I consider it a "rip-off" because they have a monopoly on lodging in Buckingham County. When I'm not staying with relatives, I usually stay in Farmville, which is just across the Buckingham County line in Prince Edward County. You will find a better selection of motels there (check it out on YAHOO!) As for Cumberland County, I would give the same advice...find a motel in Farmville. I used to stay in a small motel on US Rt. 60 east of Cumberland Court House, but I heard that it went out of business. My parents lived and died in Cumberland County, so I always stayed with them when I visited the County. I do not know of one motel in the County, but there could be a "mom-and-pop" type that I overlooked. If I have missed something, I too would like to hear what others do for lodging in Buckingham and Cumberland Counties. If you're going further west, there are motels in Appomattox (like Super 8), and Lynchburg is represented by almost every motel chain, plus it has the 3rd best genealogical library in the State (Jones Memorial Library), the first two being the Library of Virginia in Richmond and the Alderman Library at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Have been asking these questions for awhile but hope to contact some new "blood" about this family name. Am descendant of John Hardyman(Hardiman) (Lt. Col.)of Charles City Co., Va in the late 1600's and early 1700's. Am updating a book that we published in 1900's about later generations of Hard-mans by what ever spelling and would like to contact anyone who has researched this family or knows about them for the periods of the 1700's to mid 1800's. There are some missing links that we need. Will be glad to share what we know or think we know. Researching my O'Brien line and would like to know where my 5th g-grandfather landed when he came to America from Ireland. My ggggg-grandfather was a (William?) Patrick O'Brien, died in Buckingham in 1794. His sons were Patrick, Jr, Mark, William and Glen. Patrick and a Matthias O'Brien are listed as Va Tithables in Buckingham in 1773. If you recognize any of these names, I would appreciate your contacting me. Thank you. Fran Harris Hill, Richmond, VA
