One business still operating in New Canton is a general store, which I visited last fall. The folks who run it have been around a long time and every piece of information eventually goes through there. I was very lucky that the family line I was looking for was known to those who frequent the store. I also bought a New Canton T-shirt. It was hanging with some others and had been there quite some time. I feel sure that anyone I saw who recognized the New Canton name on the shirt would have to know my family line there. I can't recall the exact location right now. Anderson's Garage was operating until the past few years. It still has the sign, but is no lnger in business. I don't know the history of New Canton and would like to know also..my great great great grandfather,WALTER IRVINE, was a merchant there and died in 1807 (published in Va. newspaper) .. his widow remarried a man named Smyth Payne who was apparently a lawyer around New Canton..I located his wife's obit..she had died leaving 11 children...my ancestor died in Cumberland Co..just across the river apparently...he must have been relatively young when he died...I have often wondered if he was brought back to New Canton area to be buried...he died at his brother-in- law's home so he may have been buried there..I too wonder if the cemetaries in Buckingham Co have been recorded. Mary Kennedy VA Buckingham and adjoining area names: IRVINE(SOMETIMES SPELLED IRVING), FITZHUGH , ROSE ,JONES, GREENHILL and a string of others who were THEIR ancestors.

When I saw the same unusual name in your reply message dated 17 May 2000 I thought it had to be more than coincidence. Have you seen anything to indicate that the Gideon I am researching could be from your line? Any infro. would be greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance.
On my way back from Monticello several weeks ago, I made a quick trip through Buckingham County, looking for Penlan and New Canton, where my grandmother came from. On the road to New Canton, there was a really marvelous historic church, but the cemetary was really sad. Some tombstones were being swallowed up by the woods. The church is beautiful. I can't remember the name--beautiful brick structure. Is there a possibility of its being restored? Has that cemetary been documented? I then went through New Canton--what a neat place. Penlan was very disappointing--the only thing I saw was a railroad sign saying Penlan. I was hoping to find graves of Inges and Boatrights but didn't so came back a little disappointed. New Canton would be a neat place to restore. Does anyone on the list know of the history of these two places? Historic Buckingham Inc. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vahb/ Route 60 west out of Richmond is the best way/ quickest way to get to Buckingham county. Rt. 60 goes right through the courthouse area. Hope the website helps.
Hi Janice, I live in Florida and went to Buckingham Co. twice in the past 18 months. The one thing I was unprepared for was how few places there are to stay. Motels/hotels are few and far between. The B. County museum is a nice stopover...depending on your time frame. We did get to go in and it was worth the adventure. A few blocks up the road was a really nice craft store and cafe. I don't know if it is still there, but the folks were great and the lady there knew a good bit of local history. The food was good, too. This was in the town of Buckingham Courthouse. I also went to Curdsville and on a later trip to New Canton, but they are wide stops in the road. I didn't go to the courthouse as it was a weekend. I have talked to them there and they were nice. I telephoned them and they sent me a county map with all the little roads and hollers on it. I was told the library was a big asset, but I didn't get to go there. A real life saver!!!!! Hope this helps.
